2023 Grammy Predictions: Best Comedy Album, Spoken Word Album, and Musical Theater Album

Best Comedy Album
Will Win - Dave Chappelle "The Closer"
Could Win -  Patton Oswalt "We All Scream" and Louis C.K. "Sorry"
Should Win - Oswalt, Jim Gaffigan
Commentary - Apparently voters in this category are immune to controversies, as they continue to reward Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K. So I think that Dave Chappelle, who returns to this race for the first time since is 2020 win, will continue his streak. Also watch out for Oswalt, and I would love to Gaffigan finally win.

Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording
Will Win - Viola Davis "Find Me"
Could Win - Questlove "Music is History" or Mel Brooks "All About Me"
Should Win - Viola Davis "Find Me"
Commentary - Over the last several years, this category has rewarded the political favorite of the year. Don Cheadle talking about John Lewis, Rachel Maddow, Michelle Obama, Jimmy Carter, etc. This year, the trend is broken (Michelle's latest book will be eligible next year!, with all of the nominees being actors/musicians. All five are popular, and so there will be no jaw-droppers. I am personally rooting for Viola Davis' stunning memoir Find Me. A win here would make her an EGOT winner. While Questlove could win after his Oscar win, and these are the music awards, this category has favored non-musicians. Viola and Questlove should also keep an eye out for Mel Brooks. This category rewarded Betty White, Carl Reiner, Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee all towards the end of their careers. Basically, Brooks fills the living legend slot. All of that being said, I think Viola completes the EGOT, becoming the 18th member of that elite group.

Best Musical Theater Album
Will Win - A Strange Loop
Could Win - MJ The Musical or Into the Woods
Should Win - A Strange Loop
Commentary - Usually, the  current Tony winner for Musical or Revival of a Musical wins this award. This year, MJ the Musical might be more popular with Grammy voters than Tony voters, and Into the Woods has an all-star cast. But I think and hope that A Strange Loop will continue its winning streak and Grammy tradition.

  1. They aren't immune to controversies. They just know that Dave Chappelle is funny. Simple as that.
