The Oscar Narrative: And. Here. We. Go...

Tomorrow morning, the Annie Award nominations come out, and tomorrow night is the Gotham Awards. Tuesday we will get the National Board of Review picks, and Wednesday the BFCA and NYFCC, two of the more recognized critics groups announce their nominees and winners respectively. We have been flirting with the Oscar race since Cannes in May, and even though most folks count the start of the film festivals as the official start of Oscar season, in terms of real awards, this is the week where it really begins. And it will be an onslaught. There are critics groups all over the country trying to make their mark on this year's awards race, and they will be fighting each other for the spotlight over the next couple of weeks. I think Moonlight and Manchester By the Sea are going to do extremely well with these groups, with La La Land and Fences getting some notices, and then doing better with the actual guilds and the Oscar voters (although I think all four films will play well with the Academy and will win something on Oscar night). Here are my updated predictions for the top six categories before the onslaught begins:

The 32nd Annual Film Independent Spirit Award Nominations

Always an interesting set of nominations, and looking at them, I can't help but think after several years of lining up a bit too closely to Oscar, this year I think there might be some differences. For example, the interesting misses of Michelle Williams and Kenneth Lonergan (for directing), Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Jeff Bridges, and Loving and Hell or High Water for Best Feature feel like they are anomalies that will soon be corrected. Or will they? Will American Honey emerge as more than an Indie Spirits favorite or be this year's Tangerine? Then there are other, less-Oscary snubs like Rebecca Hall, Sally Field, Closet Monster, Maggie's Plan, and Adam Driver. Overall though, this is an incredible set of nominees, and like I said, I think this may be the year this ceremony returns to being the Oscar alternative. Although Moonlight, Manchester By the Sea, and Jackie could prove me wrong.

2016 Producers Guild of America (PGA) Documentary Feature Nominatons

So these are always an interesting bunch, and they don't have the best track record with Oscar, usually at least a few cross over. The biggest surprise here is the lack of Ava DuVernay's 13th, which I think could easily take the top prize. I think The Eagle Huntress, Life Animated, and OJ are the best bets to cross over. Here are the nominees:

The Oscar Narrative: Post Festival Predictions - Best Picture

Post Festival Predictions
Allied
Fences
La La Land
Lion
Live By Night
Loving
Manchester By the Sea
Moonlight
Silence
Sully

Other Contenders - Jackie, Nocturnal Animals, 20th Century Women, Hacksaw Ridge, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hidden Figures, Rules Don't Apply, Passengers, Miss Sloane, The 13th, The Jungle Book, Hell or High Water, The Comedian, Billy Lynn's Long Halfitme Walk, Moana, Finding Dory, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Comedian, Bleed for This, The Birth of a Nation, Gold, Collateral Beauty, Patriot's Day, The Lobster, Love and Friendship, Queen of Katwe, The Founder, I Daniel Blake, American Honey, Everybody Wants Some!!, Morris From America, The Girl on the Train, Deepwater Horizon, Certain Women, Elle, Eye in the Sky, Maggie's Plan, Cafe Society

Other Contenders - Allied is set to have a big weekend, and as the reviews pour in, it is looking like this year's science fiction favorite. After years of ignoring genre films, the Academy has upped its game lately with nominations and wins for films like Gravity, The Martian, Mad Max, etc. Allied looks set to continue their streak. La La Land is the front runner right now, with indie favorites Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight right behind it. While full reviews are still embargoed, early word is that Fences is magnificent, especially its cast. Expect it to be the actors favorite this year. Silence and Live By Night are still upcoming but both have the pedigrees to remain on this list. Loving is slipping, and has continued to slip as new films have hit the circuit. It is still tentatively in there, but don't be surprised if its gets missed on the final list. Lion has good reviews, Weinstein in its pocket, and is pure Oscar bait. Finally, Sully is a solid, well-acted film that did incredibly well at the box office, and has the potent combination of Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood. As films come and go, this well-liked favorite will play well with the older members of the Academy, who still have a lot of voting power despite recent changes. Jackie and Nocturnal Animals are stylish and will have a lot of support, although I'm sure if they will get in the top category. 20th Century Women is going to get some love, particularly for its actors, but might be too light for Best Picture. Same for Florence Foster Jenkins, although many of us doubted Frears' last one Philomena at our own peril. Hidden Figures looks strong, but until we get some reviews I am holding my reservations. Rules Don't Apply looks like a mixed bag, as does Miss Sloane, and Passengers' buzz is dead as a doorknob (although I still think it might surprise). Hell or High Water, Bleed for This, The Lobster, Love and Friendship, I, Daniel Blake, American Honey, Everybody Wants Some!!, Elle, Certain Women, Maggie's Play, and Morris From America are the small indies hoping to breakthrough. Some decent or potentially decent mid-range films like Deepwater Horizon, The Founder, Patriot's Day, The Comedian, The Girl on the Train, and Cafe Society are possibilities as well. And finally, don't discount the big guys, even though it is easy to do. Rogue One, The Jungle Book, Finding Dory, Moana, and Zootopia could surprise.

The Oscar Narrative: Post Festival Predictions - Best Director

Post Festival Predictions
Damien Chazelle "La La Land"
Barry Jenkins "Moonlight"
Kenneth Lonergan "Manchester By the Sea"
Martin Scorsese "Silence"
Denzel Washington "Fences"

Other Contenders - Ben Affleck "Live By Night", Denis Villeneuve "Arrival", Clint Eastwood "Sully", Pablo Larrain "Jackie", Theodore Melfi "Hidden Figures", Garth Davis "Lion", Stephen Frears "Florence Foster Jenkins", Mike Mills "20th Century Women", Ang Lee "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk", Morten Tyldum "Passengers", Jeff Nichols "Loving", Robert Zemeckis "Allied", Warren Beatty "Rules Don't Apply", Mel Gibson "Hacksaw Ridge", Tom Ford "Nocturnal Animals", Taylor Hackford "The Comedian", Nate Parker "The Birth of a Nation", David MacKenzie "Hell or High Water", Ava DuVernay "The 13th", John Madden "Miss Sloane", Yorgos Lanthimos "The Lobster", Peter Berg "Patriot's Day", Jon Favreau "The Jungle Book", Whit Stilman "Love & Friendship", Andrea Arnold "American Honey", Gareth Edwards "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", Pedro Almodovar "Julieta", Jeff Nichols "Midnight Special", Kelly Reichardt "Certain Women", John Lee Hancock "The Founder", Gavin Hood "Eye in the Sky"

Commentary - Like always, it seems impossible this early to narrow down to five, especially in an expanded Best Picture race. Martin Scorsese, even sight unseen, should not be discounted, since he has been on a streak lately with the Director's branch. Denzel Washington could be the latest actor turned director to cross into this race,  because it turns out that Fences is as good as we thought it wold be. The other three are known entities, and probably the leading contenders going into Phase 1 aka the critics, who are likely to buoy these three. Damien Chazelle barely missed the cut for Whiplash, and I think his La La Land is now the leading contender for Best Picutre. I find it hard to believe he will miss out this year. Finally, the two indie favorites this year are Moonlight and Manchester By the Sea. While there are some big names that could knock them out, the reviews are keeping Barry Jenkins and Kenneth Lonergan in the top five. Live By Night is the latecomer to the race, but after he was snubbed for Argo, I am a bit shy to pck him. Arrival is getting rave reviews, and will probably do big business this weekend, putting Denis Villeneuve in the running. Previous winners/nominees liek Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty, Mel Gibson, Stephen Frears, Pedro Almodovar, Taylor Hackford, Morten Tyldum, Robert Zemeckis, and Ang Lee all have projects that are worth keeping in consideration. Theodore Melfi is a possibility for Hidden  Figures, Garth Davis has Lion and Weinstein behind him, Mike Mills does wonders with his cast, Nate Parker is still in the running (although falling fast), Jeff Nichols has two great films, Tom Ford has another stylish hit, John Madden could return with Miss Sloane, and Ava DuVernay could make history with her doc The 13th. On the peripheral are folks like Jon Favreau and Gareth Edwards for their blockbusters, Kelly Reichardt, John Lee Hancock, Gavin Hood, David MacKenzie, Yorgos Lanthimos, Peter Berg, Andrea Arnold, and Whit Stilman.

Meryl Street to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at Golden Globes

Women don't win the Cecil B. DeMille Award often. Since 2000, only two women, Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and Jodie Foster. Well now another woman, who also happens to be the greatest working American actor of either gender in modern cinema, is winning the prize. Of course I am speaking of the marvelous Meryl Streep. For the record she has won 3 Oscars, out of a stunning nineteen nominations. At the Globes, she is even more dominant. She has won 9 Golden Globes, out of an even more stunning 29 nominations. With this honor she is at an even 10 and 30. Congratulations Meryl, I can think of no actress who is more deserving.
