The Oscar Narrative: July Nomination Predictions - Best Actress

July Nomination Predictions
Glenn Close "The Wife"
Viola Davis "Widows"
Felicity Jones "On the Basis of Sex"
Melissa McCarthy "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"
Saoirse Ronan "Mary, Queen of Scots"

Other Contenders - Olivia Colman "The Favourite", Carey Mulligan "Wildfire", Lady Gaga "A Star is Born", Toni Collette "Hereditary", Emma Stone "The Favourite", Renee Zellweger "Judy", Emily Blunt "Mary Poppins Returns", Emily Blunt "A Quiet Place", Penelope Cruz "Everybody Knows", Charlize Theron "Tully", Keira Knightley "Collette", Kiki Layne "If Beale Street Could Talk", Maggie Gyllenhaal "The Kindergarten Teacher", Rachel McAdams "Disobedience", Rachel Weisz "Disobedience", Hilary Swank "What They Had", Kathryn Hahn "Private Life"

Commentary - Well Cate Blanchett is out as Where'd You Go Bernadette moves to March 2019 (ouch, must not be great), and Rio, now called Let It Fall Back, is moving as well so there goes Michelle Williams. I still have Glenn Close, Viola Davis, and Saoirse Ronan in, and all three still seem really strong. I also still think that Melissa McCarthy has a sleeper on her hands with her dark turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Finally, the first trailer for On the Basis of Sex, and the resurgence of popularity for RBG could spell Oscar gold for previous nominee Felicity Jones. Beyond those five, I am looking closely at Olivia Colman for The Favourite (and maybe her co-star Emma Stone if she gets bumped up). Lady Gaga is getting a lot of buzz, but I am still a bit weary of the film's awards prospects. Toni Collette and Charlize Theron are both big potentials from the first half of the year, and Emily Blunt has two big possibilities. Also look out for Renee Zellweger's comeback as Judy Garland, Keira Knightley, newcomer Kiki Layne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kathryn Hahn, and the duo from Disobedience.

The Oscar Narrative: July Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

July Nomination Predictions
Timothee Chalamet "Beautiful Boy"
Russell Crowe "Boy Erased"
Michael B. Jordan "Black Panther"
Daniel Kaluuya "Widows"
Sam Rockwell "Backseat"

Other Contenders - Steve Carell "Backseat", Colin Farrell "Widows", Richard E. Grant "Can You Ever Forgive Me?", Joel Edgerton"Boy Erased", Adam Driver "BlacKKKLansman", Topher Grace "BlacKKKlansman", Armie Hammer "On the Basis of Sex", Sam Elliott "A Star is Born", Kyle Chandler "First Man", Corey Stoll "First Man", J.K. Simmons "The Front Runner", Peter Bogdanovich "The Other Side of the Wind", Lin-Manuel Miranda "Mary Poppins", Jake Gyllenhaal "Wildlife", Nicholas Hoult "The Favourite", Al Pacino "The Irishman", Joe Pesci "The Irishman"

Commentary - So The Irishman looks like it is now going to be in 2019, leaving two huge holes in this race without Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. I think Timothee Chalamet has got to be an early front runner. He is so beloved after his Call Me By Your Name role, and we often see actors win on their second try after missing the first. Last year's winner in this category could return to try to stop him though, as Sam Rockwell play President Bush feels like awards gold. After seeing the trailer for Boy Erased, I think both Kidman and Crowe are in positions to clean up in awards season, playing the parents who send their son to gay conversion therapy. Last year's Best Actor nominee is one of the many names involved in Steve McQueen's Widows, but he is so hot from his Get Out love last year, I think he is easily leading his co-workers (although we will find out soon). Finally, I think Black Panther is staying in this conversation. As the onslaught of new fall contenders hits in a few weeks, the conversation may change. But for now, people are still talking about Black Panther, and Michael B. Jordan's performance is one of the main points of conversation. He is well overdue for some recognition, and is magnificent in the role. Beyond those five, I would look out for Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton in a potential triple threat, Adam Driver and Topher Grace, Kyle Chandler and Corey Stoll, Richard Grant, J.K. Simmons, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Peter Bogdonavich.

The Oscar Narrative: July Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

July Nomination Predictions
Amy Adams "Backseat"
Claire Foy "First Man"
Nicole Kidman "Boy Erased"
Regina King "If Beale Street Could Talk"
Margot Robbie "Mary Queen of Scots"

Other Contenders - Vera Farmiga "The Front Runner", Rachel Weisz "The Favourite", Emma Stone "The Favourite", Katherine Waterston "Mid '90s", Laura Dern "JT Leroy", Kathy Bates "On the Basis of Sex", Amy Ryan "Beautiful Boy", Maura Tierney "Beautiful Boy", Elizabeth Debicki "Widows", Cynthia Erivo "Widows", Michelle Rodriguez "Widows", Leslie Mann "Welcome to Marwen", Meryl Streep "Mary Poppins Returns", Tatiana Maslany "Destroyer", Anna Deveare Smith "Can You Ever Forgive Me?", Natalie Portman "The Life and Death of John F. Donovan", Lupita Nyong'o "Black Panther", Letitia Wright "Black Panther", Danai Gurira "Black Panther", Ruth Negga "Ad Astra"

Commentary - The front five have not changed much since April. I moved Vera Farmiga to a sixth place, but its not because she can't, I just needed a slot for Nicole Kidman. The first trailer for Boy Erased looks like a stunner, and she is a perennial favorite, and has been nominated several times before for the emotional mom role. The other five, Adams, Foy, King, and Robbie, still feel like strong bets. The Favourite is gaining in buzz, and it has two Oscar winners in this category this year, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. If Mid '90s is this year, then Katherine Waterston could be this year's Laurie Metcalf. The supporting casts of Beautiful Boy and Widows are potentials, but we will have to see which of the cast members rises to the top. Meryl Streep has a big cameo in Mary Poppins Returns, the Black Panther girls are all fantastic, and names like Ruth Negga, Tatiana Maslany, Leslie Mann, Anna Deveare Smith, Natalie Portman, and Kathy Bates should not be ignored.

The Oscar Narrative: July Nomination Predictions - Best Original Screenplay

July Nomination Predictions
Adam McKay "Backseat"
Bo Burnham "Eighth Grade"
Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara "The Favourite"
Jonah Hill "Mid '90s"
Mike Leigh "Peterloo"

Other Contenders - Tamara Jenkins "Private Life", Caroline Thompson and Robert Zemeckis "Welcome to Marwen", Alfonso Cuaron "Roma", Asghar Farhadi "Everybody Knows", James Gray and Ethan Gross "Ad Astra", Paul Schrader "First Reformed", Chloe Zhao "The Rider", Ari Aster "Hereditary", Wes Anderson, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Kunichi Nomura "Isle of Dogs", Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski "A Quiet Place", Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi "Destroyer", Daniel Stiepleman "On the Basis of Sex", Oja Kodar and Orson Welles "The Other Side of the Wind"

Commentary - Well, Wendy moves to 2019, taking a slot I had reserved for Benh Zeitlin. I also have moved out Private Life, as buzz has been mute. I still think A24 has another Lady Bird on its hands with Mid '90s, and that Mike Leigh and Adam McKay are popular enough with this branch to get in. Also, I think Backseat could end up being a huge Oscar contender across the board. That leaves two slots. I am not sure if Eighth Grade is going to be a bit awards contender, but if any branch is going to embrace the critical favorite, it is this one. Finally, while Yorgos Lanthimos is not writing the screenplay this time, word is out that The Favourite might be one to watch for in many races, especially this one. Beyond those five you have previous Oscar favorites Alfonso Cuaron, Robert Zemeckis, Asghar Farhadi and Wes Anderson. Some genre pieces like Ad Astra, Hereditary, and A Quiet Place are ones to watch for, as are On the Basis of Sex, First Reformed, The Rider, Destroyer, and Orson Welles unearthed The Other Side of the Wind.

The Oscar Narrative: July Nomination Predictions - Best Adapted Screenplay

July Predictions
Luke Davies and Felix Van Groeningen "Beautiful Boy"
Joel Edgerton "Boy Erased"
Josh Singer "First Man"
Barry Jenkins "If Beale Street Could Talk"
Gillian Flynn and Steven McQueen "Widows"

Other Contenders - Beau Willimon "Mary Queen of Scots", Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole "Black Panther", Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Ryan Reynolds "Deadpool 2", Matt Bai, Jay Carson, and Jason Reitman "The Front Runner", Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, and Spike Lee "BlacKKKlansman", Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty "Can You Ever Forgive Me?", Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan "Wildlife", Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, and Will Fetters "A Star is Born", David Magee "Mary Poppins Returns", Steve Zaillian "The Irishman", Brad Bird "Incredibles 2", Alex Garland "Annihilation", Andrew Haigh "Lean on Pete"

Commentary - This race looks to be a lot more competitive than last year's, even with it looking like The Irishman moving to 2019. Josh Singer is past winner for Spotlight, and returns in Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic. Poor Gillian Flynn lost at the finish line for Gone Girl, but teaming up with Oscar winner Steve McQueen might be the combination she needs to earn an Oscar nomination. Barry Jenkins won for his adaptation of Moonlight. If he brings the same energy to his adaptation of James Baldwin, he will be back in this race. Joel Edgerton has been quietly amassing a career as a success behind the camera to match his success in from of it. The first trailer for Boy Erased promises an emotional ride, and could make Edgerton a screenwriting success as well. Finally, I think that the Steve Carell and Timothee Chalament-led Beautiful Boy, whose script is written by previous nominee Luke Davies, is set to be a big Oscar favorite. Beyond those five, look for previous nominee Beau Willimon for the period piece Mary Queen of Scots, Jason Reitman and his team for The Front Runner, Spike Lee's BlacKKKlansman team, and previous nominees/winners Alex Garland, Brad Bird, and David Magee. After Logan's success last year, I think that the folks behind Deadpool 2 and Black Panther are worth a look. But I would also not discount the quirkier writers who often are a hit with this branch such as Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Andrew Haigh, and Nicole Holofcener. Finally, I think that the third remake of A Star Is Born sounds good on paper, but feels like one that sputters at the end. If it is as good as people are hoping, Cooper and his writing team are in this race.

2018 Emmy Nominations: Analysis

Drama
So there are four series that rose to the top of the nominations. I really thought Westworld was breaking through when it got both Harris and Wright into Best Actor, both well-deserved. Then it missed writing and directing, and that hurts its otherwise impressive haul. So the four are in ascending order, Stranger Things. It got everything it needed to. But if it couldn't win last year when the buzz was at a fever pitch I don'think it wins this time. A surprise number three is The Crown. It added another nomination to its impressive first season haul. It got in Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith which most folks were either not predicting or they were borderline, and still impressed in the crafts, directing, and writing. With all of the genre pieces this year, The Crown could sneak through without any of us noticing. Game of Thrones is a close number two. It made a gamble by moving Harrington and Clarke to lead, and it did not pay off. It still led the nominations, and it has everything it needs. But that showed weakness. Especially since HBO's second gamble with the Westworld guys paid such rewarding dividends. So that leaves The Handmaid's Tale in first place. It is not as strong this year with Game of Thrones returning, and the fact that its second season has not been as critically strong as its first. In fact, its last episode premiered on Hulu this week, and so far the reviews have not been too kind. This could hurt it in a close race. The rest of the field, The Americans, This is Us, and Westworld were all expected. In Drama Actor, Liev Schreiber and Harrington missed out for the inclusion of Ed Harris (who missed last year but got in the second time around), and Jason Bateman, who got in despite a lot of controversy surrounding him. He actually was a part of a bigger trend for Ozark which stole directing nods away from Westworld, and ended up with five nods overall. In Lead Actress, big snubs for Mandy Moore (proof that This is Us is not as strong as we though), and replaced by previous winner Tatiana Maslany. A note, the fantastic Sandra Oh becomes the first Asian-American actress ever nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Congrats to one of the best! The Supporting Actor category saw the snubs of Anthony Hopkins (which makes sense) and Justin Hartley (another weak showing for This is Us), and instead the inclusion of Joseph Fiennes (part of the big acting expansion for The Handmaid's Tale), and surprise nominee Matt Smith, which showcased the power of The Crown down-ballot this year. The biggest category shakeups this year for Drama was Supporting Actress. Even with seven nominations, Chrissy Metz was left off (the final straw for This is Us), and Strahovski and Kirby got in on the strength of their performances and their shows. This might help Headey and Newton breakthrough the three nominees for Handmaid's Tale.

Comedy
Atlanta WAY over-performed here, with Katt Williams, Zazie Beetz, and some nice technical nods to boot. But we have seen this before, with shows like Transparent and Orange is the New Black do this, only to lose to the funnier competition. So watch out for Mrs. Maisel, which did exactly what it needed to and should not be discounted, especially with Amazon spending so much money on its campaign. The biggest disappointment here was Will & Grace, for me at least. Especially after the mediocre return of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the limping along Silicon Valley. The only other contender here that I think could spoil the party is Barry. It way over-performed as well, and proves HBO is still the king. It is the only one that got both writing and directing besides the top two. The acting races proved to be chocked full of surprises. In Actor, Erik McCormack was replaced by the legendary Ted Danson. I hate that they could not make room for Debra Messing, but Issa Rae's nomination is my favorite one of the list, and is so well-deserved. I don't think anyone is winning over Brosnahan, and that is well-deserved, but I hope Issa gives her a run for her money. In the bloodbath that is now the end of Will & Grace's Emmy chances, somehow Sean Hayes was left out. This leaves this race wide-open, with some surprise inclusions such as Kenan Thompson, and the legendary Henry Winkler, who just went from just missing out to potentially winning a way overdue Emmy. Supporting Actress was so stacked it took 8 nominees to stack them all in, adding in Aidy Bryant and Zazie Beetz joining the predicted six.

Limited Series, TV Movie, etc.
These categories are so screwed up, I don't know what Emmy voters were thinking. The fact that Howard's End and The Looming Tower lost out to Picasso and The Alienst, shows that these categories might seriously be broken. More on these later.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Drama Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
The Americans
The Crown
Game of Thrones
The Handmaid's Tale
Stranger Things 2
This is Us
Westworld

Other Contenders - Killing Eve, Ozark, Mindhunter, Counterpart, The Good Doctor, Homeland, Mr. Robot, Orange is the New Black, The Good Fight, The Deuce, Trust, The Chi

Commentary - It feels like there are seven easy votes. We know The Handmaid's Tale, This is Us, Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things, and The Crown are going to return, and after skipping a year, it feels like The Americans is going to make the cut for its final season, without Better Call Saul or House of Cards standing in its way. But is this too simple? Is there room for upset? The answer, of course, is yes. I really don't see any of the other contenders breaking through other than BBC's Killing Eve. The heat behind that show, the buzz, the TCA nods. This show is something special, and it is one to watch for. Who does it beat out? A lot of folks are not going to be happy to read this, but the seventh show is The Americans. It only got in the one year, and last year, with the onslaught of new contenders, it got bumped out. I am keeping it in over Killing Eve for one reason: final season nostalgia. I think there is enough goodwill for this show's final season to beat out the buzz for the hot new thing on the market.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Comedy Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Atlanta
black-ish
Curb Your Enthusiasm
GLOW
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Silicon Valley
Will & Grace

Other Contenders - Barry, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Modern Family, The Good Place, The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, Insecure, One Day at Time, Grace and Frankie, Mom, Arrested Development, Superstore

Commentary - I really think there 10 shows for seven slots. The three I'm leaving out? Modern Family, I think has run its Emmy course. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's short season was nowhere near as good as previous seasons, and its nomination total has decreased every year. Finally, I think Barry, HBO's big new hit, is on the cusp. But I wonder if voters will go for more than just Bill Hader. So last year's returners Atlanta, black-ish, and Silicon Valley seem safe. If Kimmy Schimdt and Modern Family are out, and Master of None and Veep are not eligible, that leaves four slots. The returns of previous Emmy favorites Curb Your Enthusiasm and Will & Grace will inspire nostalgia. There are also two new shows I think will breakthrough. GLOW is on the bubble, but Netflix has spent a lot of money towards it, and its second season premiered right in the middle of Emmy voting, which was smart. And no matter what, there will definitely be a spot for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel who could sweep in a win on its first try. Beyond those ten, I don't see a big breakthrough from any particular show, although love for The Good Place, Insecure, and One Day at a Time would be refreshing.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Actor in a Drama Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Sterling K. Brown "This is Us"
Kit Harrington "Game of Thrones"
Matthew Rhys "The Americans"
Liev Schreiber "Ray Donovan"
Milo Ventimiglia "This is Us"
Jeffrey Wright "Westworld"

Other Contenders - Freddie Highmore "The Good Doctor", Ed Harris "Westworld", Jason Bateman "Ozark", J.K. Simmons "Counterpart", Rami Malek "Mr. Robot", Jonathan Groff "Mindhunter", Paul Giamatti "Billions", Damien Lewis "Billions"

Commentary - So we know there are several slots to fill. If we assume that Brown, Rhys, Ventimiglia, and Schreiber return, which are safe bets at this point, this leaves us two slots. Of course last year they managed to have a tie for a seventh slot. Spacey is not eligible (and wouldn't have been submitted if he were), Odenkirk is not eligible, and Hopkins has dropped down to supporting. In those two slots I am putting, first, Jeffrey Wright. He was nominated last year in supporting, and had an incredible year this year on Westworld, definitely earning his lead bump up. I think this show, and this Emmy-winning actor, are going to inspire a lot of votes. In the final slot, I am putting previous nominee Kit Harrington in his jump to lead. We do not need to underestimate Game of Thrones, and his character had a lot to do this season (for those who've seen it, no pun intended). A lot of folks are banking on Freddie Highmore, but is that show really going to capture Emmy votes? Ed Harris didn't get in last year, but he had so much more to work with, and J.K. Simmons is an Oscar winner in a juicy role. Bateman probably screwed himself, Malek didn't make it last year, and two Emmy winners couldn't inspire people to vote for Billions. I think its Harrington's slot to lose.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Actress in a Drama Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Emilia Clarke "Game of Thrones"
Claire Foy "The Crown"
Mandy Moore "This is Us"
Elisabeth Moss "The Handmaid's Tale"
Keri Russell "The Americans"
Evan Rachel Wood "Westworld"

Other Contenders - Sandra Oh "Killing Eve", Jodi Comer "Killing Eve", Laura Linney "Ozark", Viola Davis "How to Get Away with Murder", Claire Danes "Homeland", Taraji P. Henson "Empire", Tatiana Maslany "Orphan Black", Maggie Gyllenhaal "The Deuce", Christine Baranski "The Good Fight", Winona Ryder "Stranger Things 2"

Commentary - So this is a race that will test the strength of Killing Eve. After leading the TCA Awards, there is a lot of heat on this new BBC show, and both of its stars, particularly previous nominee Sandra Oh, are right on the cusp of breaking through. I am not predicting them, because this show premiered a little late in the game, but it is building its buzz for a big Emmy breakthrough. If not this year, watch out next year. I think four slots feel safe. Foy, Moss, Wood and Russell should all easily return to the race this year. Viola Davis keeps getting in, and she is an Emmy winner and always fantastic. But I think the competition this year is too tough, and we know Wright will not be eligible till next year. That frees up two slots. This is Us continues to be a juggernaut, and Mandy Moore had a fantastic year full of Emmy-worthy episodes. I think she joins her co-stars. I also think the return of Emilia Clarke will be too much to pass up for Game of Thrones fans. Her jump to lead was a brave one, and it could end her streak of Emmy nods. But we have underestimated her Emmy prospects too many times in the past, and she had a barn-burner of a season. I think Khaleesi rides her dragons to other Emmy nod. I would also look out for Emmy favorite Laura Linney, previous winners Danes, Baranski, and Maslandy, previous nominees Ryder, Henson, and Gyllenhaal.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Actor in a Comedy Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Anthony Anderson "black-ish"
Larry David "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
Donald Glover "Atlanta"
Bill Hader "Barry"
William H. Macy "Shameless"
Erik McCormack "Will & Grace"

Other Contenders - Ted Danson "The Good Place", Zach Galifianakis "Baskets", John Goodman "Roseanne", Jason Bateman "Arrested Development", Matt LeBlanc "Episodes" Thomas Middleditch "Silicon Valley", Ian Armitage "Young Sheldon", Jim Parsons "The Big Bang Theory", Andy Samberg "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", Tracy Morgan "The Last O.G."

Commentary - So Aziz Ansari is inelgibile, and Jeffrey Tambor was not submitted, so there are at least two slots. I also think that last year's nominee Zach Galifianakis is vulnerable as an onslaught of new contenders tries to dethrone him. Donald Glover, William H. Macy, and Anthony Anderson feel safe despite the new contenders, and all three could contend for the win. I think Bill Hader has earned enough good will for Barry, and could be a dark horse for the win. Larry David is not my favorite actor by any means, and I did not particularly like this season of Curb, but he is a longtime favorite of the Television Academy, and should be popular enough to break back in. Erik McCormack won for his role before as Will, and I think that Emmy voters are ready to bring him and the rest of the cast back into the Emmy fold. Beyond those six and Galifianakis, Emmy favorites Goodman, Bateman, Danson, and Parsons are all possibilities, as is Middleditch, Armitage, Samberg ,and Morgan.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Actress in a Comedy Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Alison Brie "GLOW"
Rachel Brosnahan "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Allison Janney "Mom"
Debra Messing "Will & Grace"
Tracee Ellis Ross "black-ish"
Lily Tomlin "Grace & Frankie"

Other Contenders - Jane Fonda "Grace & Frankie", Pamela Adlon "Better Things", Ellie Kemper "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Issa Rae "Insecure", Justina Machado "One Day at a Time", Kristen Bell "The Good Place", Frankie Shaw "SMILF", Tiffany Haddish "The Last O.G."

Commentary - This is a tough category, so tough that I think three newcomers will knock out three of last year's nominees. We know a slot will be taken by Rachel Brosnahan, who looks like the front runner to win the whole thing. I also think that Emmy voters will make room for Alison Brie, who is a breakout for GLOW, and the return of Debra Messing. So who gets left out? I think Janney, Ross, and Tomlin, all Emmy favorites are safe. Adlon is on a small show with more competition this year, Kemper is suffering from a show with diminished buzz, and while Fonda got in last year, it took her several years to join her co-star. His makes them all vulnerable to drop out. I wish Issa Rae would get in, or Justina Machado, but there are too many folks ahead of them this time around. Also watch out for Shaw, Bell, and breakout Tiffany Haddish.

The 10th Annual Halfway Award Winners

Best Picture
Winner - Black Panther
Runners Up - Incredibles 2, The Rider, and Tully
Commentary - This has actually been a pretty good year across the board so far, with both indies and blockbusters making incredible impressions. Tully was a welcomed return to form for Jason Reitman, The Rider was poetic, sad, and beautiful, You Were Never Really Here was haunting, and Incredibles 2 successfully relaunched a beloved franchise. But at the end of the day, nothing can match the power, the energy, the pure excitement that emanated from the screen when Black Panther was playing. It is one of the best Marvel films to date, had a tremendously talented cast, and proved that Ryan Coogler is one of our finest young filmmakers working today.

Best Director
Winners - (TIE) Ryan Coogler "Black Panther" and Chloe Zhao "The Rider"
Runners Up - Brad Bird "Incredibles 2", Lynne Ramsay "You Were Never Really Here", and Jason Reitman "Tully"
Commentary - Ryan Coogler's energy, vision, and perfect blending of cultural importance and quality action and drama was impeccable. But how do you leave this year without somehow rewarding Chloe Zhao. Her work in The Rider is breathtaking, and it proved to me why she won the Bonnie Award at this year's Indie Spirits. I cannot wait to see what she brings to the screen next.

Best Actor
Winner - Joaquin Phoenix "Your Were Never Really Here"
Runners Up - Chadwick Boseman "Black Panther", Brady Jandreau "The Rider", and Ethan Hawke "First Reformed"
Commentary - Joaquin Phoenix may be one of the strangest individuals in Hollywood, but man can he act. His work in Lynne Ramsay's latest was fantastic. His under the surface boiling rage and trauma that seeps into every frame is nothing short of amazing.

Best Actress
Winner - Toni Collette "Hereditary"
Runners Up - Charlize Theron "Tully", Emily Blunt "A Quiet Place", and Juliette Binoche "Let the Sunshine In"
Commentary - Charlize Theron was marvelous, Emily Blunt was fantastic, and Juliette Binoche lit up the screen, but none of them quite had the cinematic impact of Toni Collette in the horrifying and brilliant Hereditary. She brings an energy and a haunting fear to the screen that stays with you long after you leave the theater.

Best Supporting Actor
Winner - Michael B. Jordan "Black Panther"
Runners Up - Alex Wolff "Hereditary" and Hugh Grant "Paddington 2"
Commentary - Michael B. Jordan has proved himself many times over, and is one of the brightest young actors working today. He is brings a ferocious, socially-relevant, and screen-stealing villain to Black Panther that far outweighs the normal stock villains you see in comic-book films. If Black Panther continues to be a part of this conversation, I hope Jordan is remembered at the end of the year.

Best Supporting Actress
Winner -  Kathryn Newton "Blockers"
Runners Up - Letitia Wright "Black Panther" and Danai Gurira "Black Panther"
Commentary - The Black Panther duo were dynamic, but the performance of this group I can't get out of my head is the Kathryn Newton. Blockers was a surprise for me, a raunchy comedy with a lot of heart I wasn't expecting. Newton is a perfect representation of the film. She was at times hilarious and self-assured, but also managed to bring a lot of depth to the raunch.

Best Screenplay
Winner - Diablo Cody "Tully"
Runners Up - Armando Iannucci, David Schneider, Ian Martin, and Peter Fellows “The Death of Stalin”, Brad Bird "Incredibles 2", and Andrew Haigh “Lean on Pete”
Commentary - Cody's work doesn't always work, but when it does, it is fantastic. Tully is a return to form for both her and director Jason Reitman. The combination of quirky humor, fully-formed screwed-up characters, and darkness made for a great film, and proved that when Cody is on point, she knocks it out of the park.

Best Animated Feature
Winner - Incredibles 2
Runner Up - Isle of Dogs
Commentary - Sequels are hard, and they often fail because it is so difficult to recapture the magic. It can be particularly difficult when it has been a whopping 14 years since the original film premiered. But Brad Bird and his Pixar team once again proved why they are best in the business. Incredibles 2, like its predecessor, was wildly fun, beautifully crafted, emotionally complex, and one of the best films of the year.

Best Ensemble
Winner - Black Panther
Runners Up - Game Night, Blockers, Avengers: Infinity War
Commentary - This was easy. Top to bottom, Black Panther had some of the best actors working today firing on all-cylinders.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau "Game of Thrones"
Peter Dinklage "Game of Thrones"
Joseph Fiennes "The Handmaid's Tale"
David Harbour "Stranger Things"
Justin Hartley "This is Us"
Mandy Patinkin "Homeland"

Other Contenders - Noah Schapp "Stranger Things", Anthony Hopkins "Westworld", Brendan Fraser "Trust", Noah Emmerich "The Americans", Jon Voight "Ray Donovan", Matt Smith "The Crown", Asia Kate Dillon "Billions", Richard Schiff "The Good Doctor", James Marsden "Westworld", Zahn McClarnon "Westworld"

Commentary - Only two guys from last year will return, perennial favorite Mandy Patinkin, and Stranger Thing's David Harbor. Kelly and Banks were not eligible, Jones moved to Guest and Wright to Lead. So there is a lot of room for some new folks. Peter Dinklage should easily return, and I think this is the year that he finally brings along the well-overdue Nikolaj Coster-Waldau with him. This is Us is such an acting juggernaut, and I think Justin Hartley fills in the slot left by Jones. Finally, The Handmaid's Tale is set to do even better this time around, and there is finally room for Joseph Fiennes, who definitely earns his nomination, if he can do it. A lot of folks are banking on Noah Schapp, but kids have a hard time here, and he doesn't have the same buzz of his co-star Millie Bobby Brown. Previous nominees Anthony Hopkins and Jon Voight are also real possibilities. I really don't see anyone else in play, but I have to mention Fraser, Emmerich, Smith, Dillon, Schiff, and I wish Zahn McClarnon.

Thandie Newton "Westworld"

Other Contenders - Maisie Williams "Game of Thrones", Margo Martindale "The Americans", Vanessa Kirby "The Crown", Yvonne Strahovski "The Handmaid's Tale", Sophie Turner "Game of Thrones", Holly Taylor "The Americans", Uzo Aduba "Orange is the New Black", Hilary Swank "Trust", Constance Zimmer "UnReal", Audra McDonald "The Good Fight", Tessa Thompson "Westworld"

Commentary - This race is starting to feel settled, which means something is bound to shake things up. I think Ann Dowd is safe to return, and could easily win a second Emmy. Last year's nominees Chrissy Metz, Thandie Newton, and Millie Bobby Brown all easily earned a chance for a return, and all three could challenge Dowd for the prize. Two years ago Lena Headey was predicted by many to potentially win. She had another deliciously evil season and should return. In the final slot, I am going with Alexis Bledel. She was in Guest last year and won. This year, she has been bumped up to Supporting, and if voters loved her last year, she should easily get enough support this year. But I am concerned about Maisie Williams and Margo Martindale. Margo has won for this character for literally drinking a cup of coffee in Guest and Maisie was nominated the last time she was eligible. Both could easily knock out one of the six. I also think Vanessa Kirby, Yvonne Strahovski, Sophie Turner, Holly Taylor, Tessa Thompson, and previous winners/nominees Uzo Aduba and Constance Zimmer are all possibilities as well.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Louie Anderson "Baskets"
Alec Baldwin "Saturday Night Live"
Tituss Burgess "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"
Sean Hayes "Will & Grace"
Brian Tyree Henry "Atlanta"
Tony Shalhoub "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"

Other Contenders - Marc Maron "GLOW", Henry Winkler "Barry", Ty Burrell "Modern Family", Lakeith Stanfield "Atlanta", Eric Stonestreet "Modern Family", Kumail Nanjiani "Silicon Valley", Andre Braugher "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", Tony Hale "Arrested Development", Jesse Tyler Ferguson "Modern Family", Ed O'Neill "Modern Family", Laurence Fishburne "black-ish", Kenan Thompson "Saturday Night Live"

Commentary - I see this as an eight-way race for six slots. I think Louie Anderson, Tituss Burgess, and Alec Baldwin will all easily return. I also think Sean Hayes will have no trouble returning after all these years, and could easily come in an win yet another Emmy for his role as Jack. The last two slots are where I am having trouble. Henry Winkler and Marc Maron are hard to pass up in those slots, but I will take Emmy favorite Tony Shalhoub, and one of the Atlanta stars, which is set to have an awesome second outing. If Atlanta and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel really are the top two contenders for Best Comedy Series, they will show their strength here. Also, if these guys miss, it could show some weakness for either or both of them.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Alex Borstein "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Betty Gilpin "GLOW"
Leslie Jones "Saturday Night Live"
Kate McKinnon "Saturday Night Live"
Laurie Metcalf "Roseanne"
Megan Mullaly "Will & Grace"

Other Contenders - Rita Moreno "One Day at a Time", Aidy Bryant "Saturday Night Live", Zazie Beetz "Atlanta", Jessica Walter "Arrested Development", Judith Light "Transparent", Jane Krakowski "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Carol Kane "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Cecily Strong "Saturday Night Live", Julie Bowen "Modern Family", Sofia Vergara "Modern Family", Mayim Bialik "The Big Bang Theory", Sara Gilbert "Roseanne", Marin Hinkle "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", Jenifer Lewis "black-ish", Yvonne Orji "Insecure", Natasha Rothwell "Insecure", Jameela Jamil "The Good Place", D'Arcy Carden "The Good Place", Rosie O'Donnell "SMILF", Gaby Hoffman "Transparent"

Commentary - It may be impossible for anyone from Roseanne to get an Emmy nomination, but I actually think that Emmy voters will want to reward the rest of the cast members, who got caught in the crossfire, and are hoping to re-launch a new show without Barr. Laurie Metcalf is an Emmy juggernaut, and could benefit from sympathy. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones feel safe for SNL, and Megan Mullaly is sure to get back in for her return to the iconic role of Karen Walker. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is set to have a banner year, and Alex Borstein, a longtime television veteran should join in the success. In the final slot, I was going to put Rita Moreno. One Day at a Time keeps rising in critical praise, but if she couldn't get in last year I don't know if she can this time around. Instead I am including Betty Gilpin. GLOW seems to be set to be popular among voters, and Gilpin is a scene-stealer. I would also look out for Aidy Bryant and Zazie Beetz, both who could steal a slot. Beyond those seven there are plenty of names, from old Emmy favorites to deserving newcomers, but none of them stand out as breakthroughs. That's what makes the Emmy race exciting, there is always a potential jaw-dropper waiting in the wings.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series

2018 Nomination Predictions
Alan Alda "The Good Fight"
Matthew Goode "The Crown"
Michael C. Hall "The Crown"
Ron Cephas Jones "This is Us"
Gerald McRaney "This is Us"
Peter Mullan "Westworld"

Other Contenders - Cameron Britton "Mindhunter", Jimmi Simpson "Westworld", Beau Bridges "Homeland", Sylvester Stallone "This is Us", F. Murray Abraham "Homeland", Common "The Chi", Denis O'Hare "The Good Fight", Richard Schiff "Counterpart"

Commentary - This category feels surprisingly weak compared to some of the other guest races, but that doesn't mean there are not plenty of possibilities. I feel confident that last year's winner Gerald McRaney will return, and his co-star Ron Cephas Jones, who was nominated in Supporting Actor last year will easily make the jump down to Guest. The Crown has two guys who I think will get in, Matthew Goode and Michael C. Hall. The Good Fight may not be as big of an Emmy magnet as The Good Wife, but I think that perennial favorite Alan Alda makes the cut. Finally, I am predicting that Westworld is going to do well this year, and previous nominee Peter Mullan has a hell of an episode that should earn him attention. Beyond those six, I would look out for Cameron Britton, who should be nominated, but is not as well known as some of the other contenders. Jimmi Simpson could join Mullan, Sylvester Stallone is a genuine movie star, Common and F. Murray Abraham are standouts, and don't discount past Emmy favorites Beau Bridges, Richard Schiff, and Denis O'Hare.
