BFCC SIGNATURE AWARDS

PIONEER – Lisa Cortés
This year’s BFCC Pioneer Award is given to Lisa Cortés. Lisa is an Academy Award nominated and Emmy-winning Producer and Director. She is renowned for creating challenging, visionary stories and has been distinguished by her commitment to inclusivity and empowering diverse voices. Her contributions like this year’s Little Richard: I Am Everything about the life and career of Little Richard, the one-of-a-kind rock ‘n’ roll icon who shaped the world of music and Lisa’s ongoing dedication to her craft embodies the very essence of the word Pioneer.”

RISING STAR/ BEST NEWCOMER – (tie) A.V. Rockwell & Tia Nomore
A.V. Rockwell, director of Sundance Film Festival 2023 Grand Jury Prize winning film A Thousand and One.

And Tia Nomore for feature film acting her debut in the film Earth Mama where she, to quote BFCC member Anthony Holden (Blak Cinephile) “delivers a terrific, soul-baring performance.”

SPECIAL MENTION – Colman Domingo
Special Mention this year goes to Colman Domingo who, to quote BFCC member Harrison Martin (FLIXFROG) is “The embodiment of the word thespian. Domingo is a domineering versatile actor whether he’s on stage, television, or on the silver screen. Domingo pulled off two great performances this year as the openly gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Rustin and the charismatic yet abusive Albert ‘Mister’ Johnson in The Color Purple (2023).”

Top Ten
1. American Fiction
2. Oppenheimer
3. The Color Purple
4. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
5. Origin
6. Past Lives
7. Poor Things
8. Barbie
9. Maestro
10. Anatomy of a Fall

The Oscar Narrative - Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Adapted and Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay
Andrew Haigh "All of Us Strangers"
Cord Jefferson "American Fiction"
Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer"
Tony McNamara "Poor Things"

Other Contenders - Kelly Fremon Craig "Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.", Jonathan Glazer "The Zone of Interest", Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse", Troy Kennedy Martin "Ferrari", Tran Anh Hung "The Taste of Things"

Commentary - Four films are locked and loaded, American Fiction, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things. The last slot? I think it could be a surprise. Right now, All of Us Strangers has done really well with critics, but so has Are You There God?. Jonathan Glazer has torn up the critics awards with Director nominations, but the screenplay has been left out at the Globes and Critics Choice. Animation used to do really well in screenplay categories, so maybe Across the Spider-Verse can make the cut. Finally outside contenders include Ferrari and The Taste of Things.

Best Original Screenplay
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari "Anatomy of a Fall"
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach "Barbie"
David Hemingson "The Holdovers"
Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik "May December"
Celine Song "Past Lives"

Other Contenders - Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer "Maestro", Alex Convery "Air", Hayao Miyazaki "The Boy and the Heron", Ava DuVernay "Origin", Emerald Fennell "Saltburn", Sean Durkin "The Iron Claw", Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola "Asteroid City"

Commentary - It is going to be brutal to get down to five nominations in this category. I moved Maestro out, because in the early race, it has not made a mark in screenplay. But, I sit here, and think, I am crazy! It is probably going to be a big hit with Oscar voters, and Cooper is beloved. If the guilds come through for the film, I will switch things around. As of now, it sits precariously close at six. Barbie, The Holdovers, and Past Lives have all done well so far, as has Anatomy of a Fall. May December has done really well with critics, but I wonder if that will fizzle as we get to the guilds. However, right now, it has done well enough to stay in the top five. Alex Convery got a Critics Choice nod for Air, which did well at the Globes. It could be a surprise contender this season. Hayao Miyazaki is a sleeper for his last film, Emerald Fennell is a previous winner and the film as its supporters, finally, I think Origin, Asteroid City, and The Iron Claw could still make up for lost time and crash the race.

The Oscar Narrative - Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions
Robert DeNiro "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Robert Downey Jr. "Oppenheimer"
Ryan Gosling "Barbie"
Charles Melton "May December"
Mark Ruffalo "Poor Things"

Other Contenders - Willem Dafoe "Poor Things", Sterling K. Brown "American Fiction", Dominic Sessa "The Holdovers", Colman Domingo "The Color Purple", Glenn Howerton "BlackBerry", Paul Mescal "All of Us Strangers", Holt McCallany "The Iron Claw"

Commentary - Again, right now five guys have crossed over between the Globes and the Critics Choice. Three of them continue to be solid contenders across the board, DeNiro, Downey Jr., and Gosling, and I still think the Oscar could be between them. But Charles Melton has come on strong in the critics awards, and is one to watch for. Finally, Mark Ruffalo has managed to get both groups, but not his co-star Willem Dafoe. Dafoe though cannot be discounted, and he has surprised on Oscar morning before. Sterling K. Brown's nomination at the Critics Choice cannot be discounted, and American Fiction has finally premiered, which should help his buzz. Dominic Sessa is another intriguing option, especially as both Randolph and Giamatti do well for The Holdovers. The Color Purple did not do well with The Globes, which was a shock, but Colman Domingo could benefit from SAG. Finally, I would watch out for Paul Mescal, Glenn Howerton, and latecomer to the race Holt McCallany.

The Oscar Narrative - Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions
Emily Blunt "Oppenheimer"
Danielle Brooks "The Color Purple"
Jodie Foster "Nyad"
Julianne Moore "May December"
Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The Holdovers"

Other Contenders - America Ferrera "Barbie", Rosamund Pike "Saltburn", Rachel McAdams "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret", Taraji P. Henson "The Color Purple", Erika Alexander "American Fiction", Sandra Huller "The Zone of Interest", Penelope Cruz "Ferrari", Viola Davis "Air", Cara Jade Myers "Killers of the Flower Moon"

Commentary - Five actresses got both Critics Choice and Golden Globes. Those five, Blunt, Brooks, Foster, Moore, and Randolph, are my current predictions. Randolph is far out front if the critics have a say, as she has swept the awards so far. But, I know how this works, and SAG and BAFTA will weigh in and shift the race. The Globes nominated Rosamund Pike (a favorite of theirs), and Critics Choice nominated America Ferrera (a real spoiler). Rachel McAdams could be a real spoiler, as Are You There God, has done relatively well on the critical circuit. Taraji could join Danielle, Erika Alexander should be in the conversation, Penelope Cruz is alway a favorite, as is Viola Davis, and Cara Jade Myers could ride the love for Killers of the Flower Moon. The one I am paying the most attention to though is Sandra Huller. BAFTA could come through big for her, and her could end up a double nominee, especially as Moore and Foster don't feel as strong in slots 4 and 5.
