The Oscar Narrative: Post Venice/Toronto/Telluride Nomination Predictions - Best Original Screenplay

Post Venice/Toronto/Telluride Nomination Predictions
Damien Chazelle "Babylon"
Martin McDonagh "The Banshees of Inisherin"
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert "Everything Everywhere All at Once"
Tony Kushner and Steven Spielberg "The Fabelmans"
Todd Field "TAR"

Other Contenders - Sam Mendes "Empire of Light", James Gray "Armageddon Time", Keith Beauchamp, Chinonye Chukwu, Michael Reilly "Till", Maria Bello and Dana Stevens "The Woman King", Nicolás Giacobone and Alejandro González Iñárritu "Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths)", Elegance Bratton "The Inspection", Ruben Östlund "Triangle of Sadness", Baz Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, and Craig Pearce "Elvis", Domee Shi, Julia Cho, and Sarah Streicher "Turning Red", Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller "Bros", Anthony McCarten "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", Hirokazu Koreeda "Broker", Katy Brand "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande", Jordan Peele "Nope", Clay McLeod Chapman, Jordan Peele, and Henry Selick "Wendell & Wild"

Commentary - I am still not completely sold on Academy members embracing Everything Everywhere All at Once, but its buzz remains strong, and smart campaign could defy the odds. So I am now adding it to major categories, including this one. Damien Chazelle returns with Babylon, which could be brilliant or terrible based on its first look. Martin McDonagh is sure to return to this race after The Banshees of Inisherin landed so well on the festival circuit. The Fabelmans, right now, is probably the leading Best Picture contender after its Toronto success, expect Tony Kushner to return, and maybe, finally, win an Oscar. Finally, TAR, Todd Field's latest, has also done extremely well on the circuit so far, and he has been nominated twice for screenplay Oscars. Empire of Light might not end the season as a critical favorite, but don't discount it. Audiences are apparently going to love it, and it is a tribute to film. Other indies like Till, The Inspection, Triangle of Sadness, Broker, Good Luck to You Leo Grande, and Armageddon Time are in the mix. Bardo has had a lot of supporters, and a lot of detractors. Passion may still get it some love. Jordan Peele has two contenders, and watch out for bigger films like The Woman King, Turning Red, Bros, and biopics Elvis and I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

The Oscar Narrative: Post Venice/Toronto/Telluride Nomination Predictions - Best Adapted Screenplay

Post Venice/Toronto/Telluride Nomination Predictions
Rian Johnson "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery"
Kazuo Ishiguro "Living"
Rebecca Lenkiewicz "She Said"
Samuel D. Hunter "The Whale"
Sarah Polley "Women Talking"

Other Contenders - Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller "The Son", Noah Baumbach "White Noise",  Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie "Top Gun: Maverick", David Kajganich "Bones and All", Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", David Magee "A Man Called Otto", Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins, Gris Grimly, and Patrick Hale "Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio", Lena Dunham "Catherine Called Birdy", Alice Birch and Sebastián Lelio "The Wonder", James Cameron Josh Friedman "Avatar: The Way of Water", Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell "All Quiet On the Western Front", Matt Reeves and Peter Craig "The Batman", Marcia Romano, and Audrey Diwan "Happening",

Commentary - This race has had some huge contenders that have slightly faltered. Mixed reviews of The Son and White Noise might not hurt some of the actor contenders, but it could definitely affect them here. For my top five, now that those two have slipped. The Whale and Women Talking both came out of the festivals strong, and I think they could be Best Picture contenders. Knives Out got a writing nod, so expect the even better reviewed Glass Onion to be a player in this category (and maybe other categories this time around). She Said has yet to be seen, but it feels like a major contender. Finally, novelist Kazuo Ishiguro could be popular with the writers for Living. There are some huge blockbusters like Avatar 2, Top Gun 2, Pinocchio, and The Batman. Writers have been not so kind to these in the past, but this year, they may not have much choice. They are remaking A Man Called Ove, now called A Man Called Otto, which featured David Magee, a two-time nominee. Bones and All is creative enough, that it could be embraced, The Wonder, All Quiet on the Western Front, Happening, and Catherine Called Birdy are intriguing, and don't discount a White Noise or The Son comeback.

12th Annual Awards Psychic Television Award Winners

Best Drama Series
Winner - Heartstopper
Runners Up - Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Pachinko, Severance, Stranger Things, Succession, This is Us, Yellowjackets
Commentary - Better Call Saul, Succession, and This is Us are all previous winners, and had great seasons. So did Stranger Things, Yellowjackets, Severance, and Pachinko. I am going out on a limb for a show that didn't even submit for these Emmys (they went for the upcoming youth ones where they will probably clean up in the nominations). When I thought about the Drama series this year that I enjoyed every single moment of, and was also incredibly well done, I always came back to Heartstopper. Heartstopper is the show that every one of us who ever felt different in high school needed back in the day. It is sweet, happy, and tackles challenging issues with care and concern, and never turns itself into a tragedy (Euphoria could learn a little here). Impeccably acted, beautifully wrought, and joyful to a fault, Heartstopper was my heart-stopping favorite of the bunch.

Best Comedy Series
Winners - (TIE) Abbott Elementary and Hacks
Runners Up - Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Better Things, What We Do in the Shadows, Somebody Somewhere, Insecure,
Commentary - A lot of great shows ended this year, and I will dearly miss them. There were also some delightful surprises in the form of new and returning shows. I got my list down to two, and I couldn't narrow it any further. First, there is Hacks, returning for its second season and managing to expand its world, make the show sharper and darker while still uproariously funny, and deepen the disturbing yet beautiful relationship between its two main characters. Second, there is Abbott Elementary. Every year we hear about the death of broadcast television, and then a show comes along that proves that there is still creativity and quality on an old medium. This year, that show was Abbott Elementary. From the mind of the fantastic Quinta Brunson, with an outstanding cast, whose chemistry is astounding, this show was funny, fresh, tackles the struggles of public school teachers, and is also heartfelt. A surprising and welcomed addition to the comedy landscape.

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Winners - (TIE) Sterling K. Brown "This is Us" and Brian Cox "Succession"
Runners Up - Jason Bateman "Ozark", Kit Connor and Joe Locke "Heartstopper", Adam Scott "Severance", Jeremy Strong "Succession"
Commentary - Brian Cox had an amazing season on Succession, continuing to bring his brand of ferocity, evil, and yet subtle charm to the patriarchal role. But I could not leave this year without recognizing the amazing talents of Sterling K. Brown. He has been magnetic and jaw-dropping on This is Us for the last several years, and is an amazing talent. His iconic role in this show will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Best Actress in a Drama Series
Winner - Mandy Moore “This is Us”
Runners Up - Christine Baranski “The Good Fight”, Laura Linney “Ozark”, Melanie Lynskey “Yellowjackets”, Zendaya “Euphoria”
Commentary - How in the holy hell of the television gods did Mandy Moore miss an Emmy nomination this year? This final season saw her character's declining health become the emotional core of story, and she was nothing short of jaw-dropping. The TCA voters got it right, and Emmy voters will not be left off the hook anytime soon for not following suit.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Winner - (TIE) Matt Berry “What We Do in the Shadows” and Kayvan Novak “What We Do in the Shadows”
Runners Up - Steve Martin “Only Murders in the Building”, Martin Short “Only Murders in the Building”,  Diedrich Bader “Better Things”
Commentary - Everyone is talking about the dynamic duo of Martin and Short in Only Murders (they are great by the way, make no mistake), but I thought there was another dynamic lead male duo that crushed this season. Of course I am talking about Matt Berry and Kayvan Novak for What We Do in the Shadows. This show is just so funny and ridiculous, and these actors do an excellent job of leaning into the crazy, including these two great lead performers.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Winner - Bridget Everett “Somebody Somewhere”
Runners Up - Pamela Adlon "Better Things", Quinta Brunson "Abbott Elementary", Issa Rae "Insecure", Jean Smart "Hacks", Robin Thede "A Black Lady Sketch Show"
Commentary - Somebody Somewhere was this little gem of a dramedy series that made you laugh and cry. It was so good, and so underrated. At its center is a devastating, beautiful, funny, and magnetic performance from the great cabaret performer Bridget Everett. In a year of magnificent performances, Everett rose to the top.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Winner - Kieran Culkin “Succession”
Runners Up - Jonathan Banks “Better Call Saul”, Billy Crudup “The Morning Show”, Matthew Macfayden “Succession”, and Chris Sullivan “This is Us”
Commentary - Culkin's character in Succession is engaging, funny, horrible, psychologically screwed, vulnerable, and no matter how grotesque he can be, you cannot look away. Culkin brings a swagger and confidence, while exploring the sad side of a character that makes TV more fun.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Winner - (TIE) J. Smith-Cameron “Succession” and Sarah Snook “Succession”
Runners Up - Julia Garner “Ozark”, Sadie Sink “Stranger Things”, and Sydney Sweeney “Euphoria”
Commentary - These two awesome women bring ferocity and depth to Succession, a very male-dominiated show. Snook is sarcastic, vulnerable, and can challenge her brothers and father in a way that only a sister and daughter can. Smith-Cameron is a quiet storm that slowly, but assuredly, works her way into your heart and conscious. Two magnificent performances for the ages.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Winner - Andre Braugher “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
Runners Up - Harvey Guillen “What We Do in the Shadows”, Brett Goldstein “Ted Lasso”, Paul W. Downs “Hacks”
Commentary - Brooklyn Nine-Nine ended this year, and while it never really recovered from its initial cancellation, and had to navigate and incredible influx of important civic discussions about policing in America, it still managed to be one of the most refreshing, funny, and honest comedy series of the last decade. At its heart is Captain Holt, played with deadpan greatness by the legendary Andre Braugher. Of all the characters, Holt is who I will miss most. That is proof of the endearing talent of this television treasure.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Winners - (TIE) Janelle James “Abbott Elementary” and Sheryl Lee Ralph “Abbott Elementary”
Runners Up - Erika Alexander “Run the World”, Hannah Einbinder “Hacks”, Lisa Ann Walter “Abbott Elementary”
Commentary - I love these two performances in Abbott Elementary. James is raucous, ridiculous, and, just when you thought she was a caricature, shows a depth of character rarely reserved for the comedic support. Sheryl Lee Ralph is an underrated, hardworking character acting legend. Her finally getting the recognition she deserves is the highlight of the Emmy season. As the matriarch Barbara, she warmed our hearts, made us miss our lost parents and grandparents, and made us laugh with a warmth that is irreplaceable.

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Winner - Colman Domingo “Euphoria”
Runners Up - Alexander Skarsgaard “Succession” and Ron Cephas Jones “This is Us”
Commentary - YAY!!! Colman Domingo's Emmy win ranks as one of my favorites of this Emmy season. His character in Euphoria is the moral conscious, and I chalk this win up to not only this season, but to his fantastic performance in the off-shoot Rue episode that came out last year. A hard-working actor finally getting his due is a phenomenon I will never get tired of witnessing, and Domingo is just the latest to join that elusive club.

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Winner - Harriet Walter “Succession”
Runners Up - Martha Kelly “Euphoria”, Olivia Colman “Heartstopper”, Sanaa Lathan “Succession”
Commentary - Walter's recurring brutality on Succession is brilliant, scene-stealing, and at times jaw-dropping.

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Winner - Nathan Lane “Only Murders in the Building”
Runners Up - Craig Robinson “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, and Jerrod Carmichael “Saturday Night Live”
Commentary - Nathan Lane never won a Primetime Emmy until last weekend, and while I hate that this was his first, he definitely deserved recognition for his role in Only Murders in the Building. His character takes a turn that defines the entire season, and ups the intrigue for the mystery unfolding. Another great turn from an acting legend.

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Winner - Harriet Samson Harris “Hacks”
Runners Up - Jane Lynch “Only Murders in the Building”, Kaitlin Olson “Hacks”, Sharon Stone “The Flight Attendant”
Commentary - Laurie Metcalf is great, and I am happy she finally won another Emmy after a thirty-year drought. But, the episode I loved the most this season was the one featuring Harriet Sansom Harris. Her funny and emotional episode arch provided the perfect foil for the sharpness of Jean Smart's Deborah, and gave us a deeper look at a well-defined character. Only an actress of Harris' skills could pull off such a mirroring performance with grace and humor.

Best Directing in a Drama Series
Winner - The Duffer Brothers “Stranger Things – Chapter Seven – The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”
Runners Up - Sam Levinson “Euphoria – Stand Still Like a Hummingbird”, Ken Olin “This is Us – The Train”, Thomas Schnauz “Better Call Saul – Plan and Execution”
Commentary - Damn that Hawkins Lab episode. It was horrifying, entertaining, and had a cinematic quality that few television shows master. Shoutout to the Duffer Brothers for raising the stakes and elevating a show that felt like it was past its peak back into the cultural zeitgeist.

Best Writing in a Drama Series
Winner - (TIE) Alice Oseman “Heartstopper – Boyfriends” and Dan Fogelman “This is Us – Miguel”
Runners Up - Jesse Armstrong “Succession – All the Bells Say”
Commentary - This is Us broke our hearts with its final season, and the backstory that was presented on the episode Miguel was beautifully wrought. Plus, this is a way to honor the great Dan Fogelman for his amazing work across many seasons of This is Us. I also wanted to give a shoutout to the delicate, charming, funny, and emotional work of Alice Oseman, who took her own Heartstopper graphic novels, and beautifully translated them to the screen.

Best Directing in a Comedy Series
Winner - (TIE) Pamela Adlon “Better Things – We Are Not Alone” and Lucia Aniello “Hacks – There Will Be Blood”
Runners Up - Claire Scanlon “Brooklyn Nine-Nine – The Last Day Pt. 2”, Prentice Penny “Insecure – Everything Gonna Be Okay?!”, Erica Dunton “Ted Lasso – Rainbow”,
Commentary - Hacks is so sharply directed, so funny, and does a beautiful job with its many set pieces across this season. There is a reason Lucia Aniello won the Emmy last year. But I also needed to reward Pamela Adlon and her beautiful work in Better Things one more time. This show was a gem, and its fanbase understood just how good it was. We will be miss Pam aka Sam, these beloved characters, this beautifully drawn little world, and this amazing show

Best Writing in a Comedy Series
Winner - Quinta Brunson “Abbott Elementary – Pilot”
Runner Up - Adam Reed and Mark Ganek “Archer - Dingo, Baby, Et Cetera”, Joe Hortua and Pamela Adlon “Better Things – London”, Kenya Barris and Robb Chavis “black-ish – If a Black Man Cries in the Woods…”, and Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen “Somebody Somewhere – Tee-Tee Pa-Pah”, and Stefani Robinson “What We Do in the Shadows – The Wellness Center”
Commentary - Quinta Brunson created one of the most clever and popular new shows on broadcast television in a long time. Her Pilot was funny, ingenious, clever, and set the stage for a fantastic season.

Best Limited Series
Winner - The White Lotus
Runners Up - Dopesick, We Own This City, Maid
Commentary - Dopesick, We Own This City, and Maid are all powerful and timely stories that need to be seen. But, like so many, I absolutely loved The White Lotus. It was a dark, raunchy, ridiculous satire about horrible people, that landed perfectly. Awkward, funny, intense, timely, and subversive, with one of the best casts in recent memory, The White Lotus was a treasure of a series.

Best Television Movie
Winner - The Survivor
Runner Up - The Fallout
Commentary - In another weak year for this category, Barry Levinson's The Survivor featuring an excellent turn from Ben Foster, stands out as a pretty solid, albeit not great, winner.

Best Actor in a Limited Series/Television Movie
Winner - Michael Keaton “Dopesick”
Runners Up - Andrew Garfield “Under the Banner of Heaven” and Ben Foster “The Survivor”
Commentary -

Best Actress in a Limited Series/Television Movie
Winner - Margaret Qualley "Maid"
Runners Up - Amanda Seyfried “The Dropout” and Wunmi Mosaku “We Own This City”
Commentary - Margaret Qualley's beautiful performance in Maid is hauntingly important and impeccably wrought by a young actress that is one to watch for in the next couple of years. She keeps this up, and a lot more awards are coming her way.

Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Winner - Murray Bartlett “The White Lotus”
Runners Up - Will Poulter “Dopesick” and Michael Stuhlbarg “Dopesick”
Commentary - Murray Bartlett had the breakout performance of the year on The White Lotus. His character Armond is the glue that holds the ensemble together. He holds a mirror up to their ridiculousness, while dealing with his own issues at the same time. He is so funny, and his character's journey is so intriuging.

Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Winner - Jennifer Coolidge “The White Lotus”
Runners Up - Kaitlyn Dever “Dopesick”, Rosario Dawson “Dopesick”, Andie MacDowell “Maid”
Commentary - I have loved Jennifer Coolidge for years, and I am so happy to see her finally get the role that showcases not only her magnetic star power, but her magnificent gift for comedy and emotional range. If she wins tomorrow, it will be my favorite win of the night.

Best Directing in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Winner - Mike White “The White Lotus”
Runners Up - Danny Strong “Dopesick – The People vs. Purdue Pharma”, Jeremy Podewsa “Station Eleven – Unbroken Circle”, Reinaldo Marcus Green “We Own This City”
Commentary - Mike White's beautiful settings up against his dark characters made for a masterclass in character directing.

Best Writing in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Winner - George Pelecanos and David Simon “We Own This City – Part One”
Runners Up - Mike White “The White Lotus” and Danny Strong “Dopesick – The People vs. Purdue Pharma”
Commentary - I will never understand how David Simon shows keep getting ignored. We Own This City was yet again a powerful, potent, and timely series that slowly built over several episodes in brilliant fashion. Simon and Pelecanos have a knack for creating unflashy stories that pack a punch through subtlety and honest. Their work here is yet another great example of their brilliant writing skills.

Best Variety Series
Winner - (TIE) Conan and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Runners Up - A Black Lady Sketch Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers
Commentary - Trevor Noah has really found his groove on The Daily Show, and has made it his own. It was great season. I also have to give a farewell hug to Conan, an under-rewarded show from an under-appreciated talent.
Best Variety Special
Winner - The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar And 50 Cent
Runners Up - Come From Away, Adele: One Night Only, and One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga
Commentary - Most Super Bowl Halftime shows are eh. But this one was the cultural event of the year. Bringing hip-hop legends to the stage brought a spark to the show that had people dancing in their living rooms and humming the tunes for weeks. A spectacular show.

Best Directing in a Variety Series/Special
Winner - Bridget Stokes “A Black Lady Sketch Show – Save My Edges, I’m a Donor!”
Runners Up - Paul Dugdale “Adele: One Night Only and Hamish Hamilton “The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar And 50 Cent”
Commentary - One of my favorite Creative Art Emmy wins was Bridget Stokes. She made history, and boy she did deserve it. Her creativity and artistry on A Black Lady Sketch Show is unmatched.

Best Writing in a Variety Series/Special
Winner - Jerrod Carmichael “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel”
Runners Up - A Black Lady Sketch Show , The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Commentary - So funny and timely, Rothaniel is an impeccably written stand-up special.

Best Animated Series
Winner - Archer
Runners Up - Arcane, Bob’s Burgers, Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Commentary - Archer wins again for me for that episode that is a nod to the late-great Jessica Walter.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama and Comedy Series

Best Drama Series
Will Win - Succession
Could Win - Squid Game
Should Win - Succession
Commentary - An epic battle between Succession and Squid Game. Squid Game is incredibly popular, and will probably win more Emmys than Succession, but in the end, the recurring favorite, the HBO production, and the more traditional of the two will take the prize.

Best Comedy Series
Will Win - Abbott Elementary
Could Win - Ted Lasso, Hacks, Barry, or Only Murders in the Building
Should Win - Abbott Elementary or Hacks
Commentary - A race that has suddenly become a toss up between five potential winners. Ted Lasso could easily repeat, as it did so well with nominations, but it won zero Creative Arts Emmys. Barry is a technical achievement and could win directing, but it is not that funny. Hacks didn't expand the way we thought it would, but it is still extremely popular and has HBO behind it. Only Murders in the Building is the hot new show that could surprise. But I am going out on a limb for Abbott Elementary. Its Casting win was huge, it has so much buzz and has campaigned hard. It is also the show that seems to have the most heart, and the most vocal support. It has a 1/5 of winning, and we really don't know how the night is going to go. But I expect a welcomed surprise.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Lee Jung-jae "Squid Game"
Could Win - Strong or Cox "Succession" or Bob Odenkirk "Better Call Saul"
Should Win - Cox or Odenkirk
Commentary - I know that Strong won last time, and while few are predicting him this time, they are not smart to discount a repeat victory. Cox had the stronger season, and it would be great to see the legend win this award. A lot of people are predicting a Jon Hamm-esque win for Bob Odenkirk, but Better Call Saul is Emmy-less, and Mad Men was one of the most rewarded drama series in history when Hamm finally won. With Succession guys closer this year, and no faith in Odenkirk, I am going with SAG winner Lee Jung-jae, and Squid Game's popularity with actors.

Best Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Zendaya "Euphoria"
Could Win - Melanie Lynskey "Yellowjackets" or Laura Linney "Ozark"
Should Win - Lynskey
Commentary - Zendaya won this up against Jennifer Aniston and Olivia Colman when Euphoria was not an Emmy powerhouse. It is now an Emmy powerhouse, and she has, in my opinion, less fierce competition. Expect her to win again. Although don't discount Melanie Lynskey for her fantastic role in Yellowjackets.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series

Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Bill Hader "Barry"
Could Win - Jason Sudeikis "Ted Lasso", Martin or Short "Only Murders in the Building"
Should Win - Steve Martin "Only Murders in the Building"
Commentary - This is a tough race (for the first time in a long time), with recent winner Sudeikis, up against past winner Hader, and two living legends in Martin and Short. I honestly don't know who is going to win, but since Ted Lasso seems to be less potent this year, and Barry having a triumphant return (plus the whole director/writer/producer/actor thing), I am predicting Bill Hader wins again.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Jean Smart "Hacks"
Could Win - Quinta Brunson "Abbott Elementary"
Should Win - Smart or Brunson
Commentary - A great matchup between two fantastic performers. I don't bet against Jean Smart, and she is so good in Hacks. But if anyone is going to beat her, watch out for the great Quinta Brunson in Abbott Elementary, who could benefit from her show's growing buzz.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Oh Young-soo "Squid Game"
Could Win - Culkin or MacFayden, Billy Crudup
Should Win - Kieran Culkin "Succession"
Commentary - Culkin and MacFayden are both so deserving, and I fear that they will split votes, and Crudup is a previous winner, which is intriguing. But I feel like The Morning Show is less popular this year. I also feel like there is another alternative. Squid Game is popular with the actors, and Oh Young-soo won the Globe (I know the Globes are the Globes, but people still pay attention), and I think even with another Squid Game actor, he is the favorite for voters who love this series. I am predicting him to upset.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Julia Garner "Ozark"
Could Win - Jung Ho-yeon "Squid Game", Sarah Snook "Succession", or Rhea Seehorn "Better Call Saul"
Should Win - Snook or J. Smith-Cameron "Succession"
Commentary - I bet against Julia Garner last year, and I regretted it. I think she is vulnerable with Seehorn finally getting a nod, the Succession duo rocking this season, and the power of Squid Game. But if anyone can overcome these odds, it is Julia Garner.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Brett Goldstein "Ted Lasso"
Could Win - Henry Winkler "Barry"
Should Win - Bowen Yang "Saturday Night Live"
Commentary - This race is between previous winners Brett Goldstein and Henry Winkler. I am, for now, sticking with Goldstein, who overcame a lot of internal competition to win last year, and whose character is a fan favorite. But Winkler back on the ballot is intriguing, and could convince me to switch before final predictions.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Janelle James "Abbott Elementary"
Could Win - Hannah Waddingham "Ted Lasso" and Hannah Einbinder "Hacks"
Should Win - James or Sheryl Lee Ralph "Abbott Elementary"
Commentary - Hannah Waddingham won last year, and could easily repeat, and I still think that Hannah Einbinder is a real threat for Hacks, especially after Laurie Metcalf overcame so much internal competition in Guest Actress at the Creative Art Emmys. But, I think that the passion and buzz for Abbott Elementary is growing at just the right moment. Janelle James won the TCA, is the scene-stealer, and is campaigning like crazy. I think she upsets here.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Directing and Writing in a Drama and Comedy Series

Best Directing in a Drama Series
Will Win - Hwang Dong-hyuk "Squid Game - Red Light, Green Light"
Could Win - Ben Stiller "Severance - The Way We Are"
Should Win - Mark Mylod "Succession - All the Bells Say"
Commentary - With three Succession episodes, I think this paves the way for another series to win the prize. Squid Game, after its success at the Creative Arts, feels like the winner here. It is the flashiest nominee of the bunch with the most bells and whistles. But watch out for Severance. Ben Stiller has made a name for himself as a director in recent years, and Severance is incredibly well made.

Best Writing in a Drama Series
Will Win - Jesse Armstrong "Succession - All the Bells Say"
Could Win - Dan Erickson "Severance - The Way We Are" or Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson "Yellowjackets - Pilot"
Should Win -  Jesse Armstrong "Succession - All the Bells Say"
Commentary - Expect previous winner Jesse Armstrong to triumph again for his masterful work in Succession. If anyone can beat him, look for Severance or Yellowjackets, both incredibly clever new shows.

Best Directing in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Bill Hader "Barry - 710N"
Could Win - Lucia Aniello "Hacks - There Will Be Blood"
Should Win - Lucia Aniello "Hacks - There Will Be Blood"
Commentary - Hacks could easily win again for its outstanding episode There Will Be Blood. However, after Barry won sound awards and editing at the Creative Arts, I feel like those technical achievements will cross over to directing. Barry may not be that funny, but its high production values should get the notice of this branch.

Best Writing in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Quinta Brunson "Abbott Elementary - Pilot"
Could Win - Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky "Hacks - There Will Be Blood", Steve Martin and John Hoffman "Only Murder in the Buildings - True Crime", Jane Becker "Ted Lasso - No Weddings and a Funeral"
Should Win - Quinta Brunson "Abbott Elementary - Pilot"
Commentary - A tough race that could go one of four ways. Hacks won last year, Ted Lasso only has one nominee this year, and Only Murder in the Building is clever and has Steve Martin as a nominee. I think instead that Abbott Elementary will continue its surprise run through this awards season and reward the voice of its success Quinta Brunson.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actor and Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Colman Domingo "Euphoria"
Could Win - Tom Pelphrey "Ozark" or Alexander Skarsgard "Succession"
Should Win - Colman Domingo "Euphoria"
Commentary - Again, Succession may hurt itself here with four nods. If one of the guys rises to the top, I expect it to be recent winner Alexander Skarsgard. But I think that this could be the year for Colman Domingo, and he is easily (in my humble opinion) the best of the bunch. Euphoria exploded with nominations this year, and he is a scene-stealer and the only nominee from his show in this category. Also watch out for fan-favorite Tom Pelphrey, who finally got deserved recognition for Ozark.

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Lee You-mi "Squid Game"
Could Win - Harriet Walter "Succession"
Should Win - Harriet Walter "Succession"
Commentary - Is this the year that Harriet Walter wins for her scene-stealing role in Succession? I wish, but I wonder if the worthy additions of Hope Davis and Sanaa Lathan will hurt her chances, especially with just one Squid Game actor nominated. The actors clearly love Squid Game, and there is no vote splitting. I think Lee You-mi wins in a tight race.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actor and Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Nathan Lane "Only Murders in the Building"
Could Win - Bill Hader "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or Jerrod Carmichael "Saturday Night Live"
Should Win - Nathan Lane "Only Murders in the Building"
Commentary - Bill Hader is an Emmy favorite and SNL guys do well here, so watch out for Jerrod Carmichael. But I think that Nathan Lane is going to finally win an Emmy on his seventh try. He had a great turn in Only Murders in the Building, and is a living legend without proper recognition. These races are always a crapshoot, but we know that big names get vote checks. Lane is a big name.

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Jane Lynch "Only Murders in the Building"
Could Win - Harriet Walter "Ted Lasso"
Should Win - Harriet Sansom Harris "Hacks"
Commentary - I really loved Hacks this season, and I thought that Harriet Sansom Harris' performance in her episode was subtle, well-done, funny, and provided a perfect mirror for Jean Smart's Deborah. But I think that the Hacks folks are going to cancel each other out, and make this race between Harriet Walter and Jane Lynch. Lynch has won this category before, is beloved by these voters, and has the showier role. I think she wins another Emmy for her efforts.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Limited Series and Television Movie

Best Limited Series
Will Win - The White Lotus
Could Win - Dopesick
Should Win - Either
Commentary -This is an amazing race to the finish for two great limited series. The White Lotus so overperformed at the nominations, that it feels like the winner. I am, right now, predicting it to win, but I reserve the right to correct after the Creative Arts. I feel like Dopesick could easily overtake it. It also did well with nominations, will win several Emmys, and it is the serious of the two. It is the one that is most relevant to society. But The White Lotus has the actors behind it, and it seems to have garnered a hardcore fanbase that I think will propel it to Emmy gold.

Best Television Movie
Will Win - The Survivor
Could Win - Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers or Ray Donovan: The Movie
Should Win - The Survivor
Commentary - I cannot believe that I am writing this, but Chip n' Dale could win this Emmy. Yes, it could happen. I am banking instead on the power of HBO, and the great reviews for the Holocaust drama, The Survivor to be a more Emmy-voter friendly pick. Also, Ray Donovan is a known product, and could siphon votes.

2022 Emmy Predictions: Best Actor and Best Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie

Best Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Will Win - Michael Keaton "Dopesick"
Could Win- Sebastian Stan "Pam & Tommy"
Should Win - Michael Keaton "Dopesick"
Commentary - Only two of the nominees are from series nominated for Limited Series, and both are the clear favorites for the top two spots. Stan is interesting in Pam & Tommy, but Keaton should have this wrapped up. He won at SAG and Critics Choice and gave impassioned speeches. He is a living legend, and is the heart and soul of Dopesick, which is one of the two front runners for the top prize. This combination should equal Emmy gold.

Best Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Will Win - Amanda Seyfried "The Dropout"
Could Win - Lily James "Pam & Tommy" or Julia Garner "Inventing Anna"
Should Win - Margaret Qualley "Maid"
Commentary - I think Qualley's performance in Maid is beautifully wrought, and had it gotten its deserved slot in Limited Series, maybe she would be in the mix. Instead, I think this is a three-way race. Amanda Seyfried is the lead in The Dropout, which did well in writing and directing, and is probably third place in the Limited Series race. She is a big, Oscar-nominated star and got rave reviews. But, Lily James could easily surprise for a transformative role (and the actors clearly loves Pam & Tommy). Also, don't bet against Julia Garner, who is now an Emmy favorite. I think it is Seyfried's to lose.
