The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Nomination Predictions - Best Picture

Post-Festival Nomination Predictions
Belfast
Don't Look Up
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
The Lost Daughter
Nightmare Alley
The Power of the Dog
The Tragedy of Macbeth
West Side Story

Other Contenders - tick, tick...boom!, Being the Ricardos, Spencer, CODA, C'mon C'mon, House of Gucci, Flee, A Hero, Parallel Mothers, Passing, The Last Duel, Mass, The Hand of God, The French Dispatch, Cyrano, Red Rocket, Mothering Sunday, No Time to Die, A Journal for Jordan, Jockey

Commentary - The race is heating up! On the eve of the start of the first critics awards, the race is packed. West Side Story just premeried, and the reactions were raves. Never discount Steven Spielberg. Plus, the production value is going to be popular among the tech voters. So will the palate of Nightmare Alley (last sight unseen) and Dune. Anne Thompson always says you build a Best Picture nominee across the guilds. These three films are the kind of visual treats that do well across these voters. The top three remain, King Richard, The Power of the Dog, and Belfast, but will have to survive the onslaught of new contenders. Licorice Pizza is apparently PTA's warmest film yet, and these voters love him and his work. Finally, while it might prove to be divisive, it apparently will end up being less divisive than Vice. Of course I am speaking of Don't Look Up, which could sweep nods like Vice and The Big Short did before. Finally, The Tragedy of Macbeth is getting a muted response, despite rave reviews. But it will do well with the crafts and the actors, and is Joel Coen + Denzel Washington + Frances McDormand cannot be ignored. Finally, after its showing at the Gotham Awards, The Lost Daughter is clearly a contender that cannot be ignored. But there are plenty of projects lurking. Lin-Manuel Mirand and tick, tick...boom! will be a favorite among theater fanatics, Being the Ricardos is doing better than expected, CODA is still a heartwarming favorite, and Spencer is very much in the mix. Mike Mills, Sean Baker, and Wes Anderson have indie favorites, Sorrentino, Farhadi and Almodovar are hoping to continue the foreign-language boon in this category, and I think a lot of folks are hoping for a blockbuster like No Time to Die to get nominated, mostly to bring audiences back to the ceremony.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Nomination Predictions - Best Director

Post-Festival Nomination Predictions
Paul Thomas Anderson "Licorice Pizza"
Kenneth Branagh "Belfast"
Jane Campion "The Power of the Dog"
Guillermo Del Toro "Nightmare Alley"
Denis Villeneuve "Dune"

Other Contenders - Adam McKay "Don't Look Up", Joel Coen "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Reinaldo Marcus King "King Richard", Pedro Almodovar "Parallel Mothers", Asghar Farhadi "A Hero", Pablo Lorrain "Spencer", Lin-Manuel Miranda "tick, tick...boom!", Steven Spielberg "West Side Story", Maggie Gyllenhaal "The Lost Daughter", Ridley Scott "House of Gucci", Ridley Scott "The Last Duel", Rebecca Hall "Passing", Sian Heder "CODA", Aaron Sorkin "Being the Ricardos", Mike Mills "C'mon C'mon", Joe Wright "Cyrano", Paolo Sorrentino "The Hand of God", Wes Anderson "The French Dispatch", Sean Baker "Red Rocket"

Commentary - A tough category that could get even tougher down the stretch. Jane Campion feels like the front runner so far, with Kenneth Branagh not far behind. The directors will pick Campion, but he bigger Academy may go with a more populist pick. Denis Villeneuve has done the impossible and the "un-filmable" Dune filmable. He is a previous nominee as well. Licorice Pizza is getting rave reviews, and the Director's Branch will love Paul Thomas Anderson's work. Finally, I am reserving a slot for Guillermo Del Toro, who won the last time he had a film in contention. Adam McKay is the sixth slot, because apparently Don't Look Up might be divisive, but so was Vice, and he got nominated. King Richard may be a huge contender, but I have a feeling that somehow Reinaldo Marcus King will be left out of the top five. Joel Coen is getting great notices for The Tragedy of Macbeth, and again he is a previous winner. Pedro Almodovar, Paolo Sorrentino, or Ashgar Fahardi could be this year's foreign language film nominee. Steven Spielberg is tackling a classic, Ridley Scott has two contenders, Lin-Manuel Miranda directs a love letter to theater, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sian Heder and Rebecca Hall could join Jane Campion. I would also watch out for Joe Wright, Wes Anderson, Sean Baker, Mike Mills, and of course, Aaron Sorkin.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Nomination Predictions - Best Actor

2022 Post-Nomination Predictions
Bradley Cooper "Nightmare Alley"
Benedict Cumberbatch "The Power of the Dog"
Leonardo DiCaprio "Don't Look Up"
Will Smith "King Richard"
Denzel Washington "The Tragedy of Macbeth"

Other Contenders - Joaquin Phoenix "C'mon C'mon", Andew Garfield "tick, tick...boom!", Peter Dinklage "Cyrano", Adam Driver "House of Gucci", Clifton Collins Jr. "Jockey", Nicholas Cage "Pig", Simon Rex "Red Rocket", Javier Bardem "Being the Ricardos", Anthony Ramos "In the Heights", Jonathan Majors "The Harder They Fall", Timothee Chalamet "Dune", Jude Hill "Belfast", Cooper Hoffman "Licorice Pizza", Michael B. Jordan "A Journal for Jordan", Caleb Landry Jones "Nitram", Oscar Isaac "The Card Counter", Jake Gyllenhaal "The Guilty", Amir Jadidi "A Hero", Dev Patel "The Green Knight", Winston Duke "Nine Days", Ansel Elgort "West Side Story", Daniel Craig "No Time to Die"

Commentary - A stacked race with lots of returning contenders. Will Smith leads the way, and may earn his first Oscar for his passion project King Richard. Denzel Washington leads The Tragedy of Macbeth, and has gotten great reviews. Leonardo DiCaprio for Don't Look Up and Bradley Cooper for Nightmare Alley are big stars in yet unknown entities, but with Adam McKay and Guillermo Del Toro helming the projects, I expect them to be a part of this race. Finally, Benedict Cumberbatch is getting rave marks for The Power of the Dog, a leading Best Picture contender. Beyond those five, Joaquin Phoenix returns in the polar opposite of his winning role in Joker. First reactions to tick, tick...boom! are positive, boosting Andrew Garfield's chances. Adam Driver might miss out after mixed first reactions to House of Gucci. Other previous winners and nominees include Javier Bardem as Ricky Ricardo, Timothee Chalamet in Dune, Nicholas Cage in his best role in years in Pig, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Dev Patel. Veteran character actor Clifton Collins Jr. is getting a lot of notice for Jockey, as is Peter Dinklage for Cyrano. Jonathan Majors is fresh off an Emmy nomination, Jude Hill is in a Best Picture front runner, Cooper Hoffman is getting great early notices in a Paul Thomas Anderson film, Michael B. Jordan is always great, Anthony Ramos should be in consideration, Caleb Landry Jones is getting rave reviews, as are Simon Rex, Amir Jadidi, Winston Duke, and Oscar Isaac. Finally, Daniel Craig's last outing as James Bond could inspire nostalgic voters.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Nomination Predictions - Best Actress

Post-Festival Nomination Predictions
Olivia Colman "The Lost Daughter"
Penelope Cruz "Parallel Mothers"
Lady Gaga "House of Gucci"
Frances McDormand "The Tragedy of Macbeth"
Kristen Stewart "Spencer"

Other Contenders - Jennifer Lawrence "Don't Look Up", Jessica Chastain "The Eyes of Tammy Faye", Jennifer Hudson "Respect", Halle Berry "Bruised", Nicole Kidman "Being the Ricardos", Rooney Mara "Nightmare Alley", Rachel Zegler "West Side Story", Tessa Thompson "Passing", Emilia Jones "CODA", Alana Haim "Licorice Pizza", Rachel Sennot "Shiva Baby", Renate Reinsve "The Worst Person in the World", Sandra Bullock "The Unforgiveable", Emily Blunt "A Quiet Place Part II", Mary Twala "This is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection", Agatha Rousselle "Titane", Emma Stone "Cruella", Marion Cotillard "Annette", Taylour Paige "Zola", Vicky Krieps "Bergman Island", Jodie Comer "The Last Duel", Chante Adams "A Journal for Jordan"

Commentary -  This race is shaping up to be a battle of previous nominees and winners, with a few new folks hoping to breakthrough. So far we know that Olivia Colman, Kristen Stewart, Frances McDormand, and Penelope Cruz are big contenders, and their films are set to do well across the board. Lady Gaga is the unseen wildcard, but it is clear from marketing that the film's team think she is going to be the big star for the film. Jennifer Lawrence could return if Don't Look Up does as well as Adam McKay's recent films. Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Hudson are great in mediocre movies. But we have seen actors reward great performances despite overall film quality, especially in this category. Nicole Kidman is Lucille Ball, Halle Berry looks great, and Rooney Mara is pairing up with Guillermo Del Toro. There are some young actresses hoping to breakthrough the glut of veterans including Tessa Thompson, Rachel Zegler, Emilia Jones, Alana Haim, Rachel Sennot, Taylour Paige, Jodie Comer, Agatha Rousselle, and Chante Adams. Emily Blunt is still looking for her first Oscar nod, Sandra Bullock, Emma Stone, and Marion Cotillard are all previous winners, and I hope voters (they won't) remember the late, great African screen legend Mary Twala.
