The winners were predictable. Jimmy Kimmel landed some jokes, and missed some. Some of the banter and gags worked, some of them didn't. Across the board, the winners were worthy, even if one of my favorites lost. The In Memoriam segment was awful, but the song performances were fun. The five previous winners was cool, but it felt like they didn't play it up enough. That is the Oscars! It is too long, and not everything works. But, I enjoyed it as always. Sometimes you have to roll with the punches. It was so good to see veterans like Nolan, Downey Jr., Randolph, and Murphy win their first Oscars. For me, Emma Stone's win will always be personal. I was in college, when my roommates and I fell in love with Easy A, her truly breakout role. To see her evolve into a two-time Oscar winner is truly awesome. To see a first-timer like Cord Jefferson get recognition is special, and I can't wait to see what he does next. The voters spread the love, with so many Best Picture nominees winning at least one Oscar. Oppenheimer truly is a great film, and will be remembered as a great Best Picture winner. I really believe that, even though we all know that hindsight really is 20/20. Overall, this was a great year for film, and I think the Oscars did a relatively good job of recognizing that excellence. Complaints will always be there, but the haters have less to complain about than some years, and for The Academy, that is a win. </div><div><br /></div>15 years ago, I started The Awards Psychic. I was a college freshman movie buff who had an affinity for awards, particularly The Oscars. I often think about why I became so obsessed with awards, not just film, television, music, etc., but the ceremonies that reward. I cannot pinpoint the exact moment, but for some reason I was always drawn to awards shows. I remember watching the Oscars for the first time in 1998, I was only seven years old. I got to see Robin Williams win an Oscar. He was the Genie in Aladdin and Mrs. Doubtfire. One of my childhood icons gave an emotional speech being rewarded with his profession's highest honor. In 2002, at age 11, I saw Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, and Sidney Poitier all win on the same night. One of the idols of my high school years was the great Philip Seymour Hoffman. In 2006, at age 15, I saw him win an Oscar. We lost Robin and Philip within months of each other. In 2009, right as this blog started, I remember the emotional feeling of Heath Ledger winning his posthumous Oscar. I remember the feeling I had when I saw Meryl Streep win an Oscar, and Frances McDormand, Daniel Day-Lewis, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, just to name a few. This is the longest thing in my life I have ever stuck with, and it has been so much more than just a blog. This has been the worst year of my professional life. It has made me rethink everything I thought I knew. I no longer want the same things I wanted when I started this job 11 years ago. Four promotions later, and so much stress and heartache, I now am looking into jumping into a leap of faith and trying something new. It is the scariest thing when your long term plan gets thrown off the tracks. But it is also the possibility of something new and exciting. We'll see how it goes. But no matter what, year 16 will go on here at The Awards Psychic. We still have a lot of stories to write, and a lot of Oscar narratives to see unfold. Oppenheimer reminds us that the world is a big, scary place, and in one moment, it all can be taken away. We have to live our lives, no matter what. I'm gonna take that advice. Thank you again to all of the readers who make this worthwhile. Cheers to Year 16. Annual Awards Psychic Award Winners<div><b><u>Best Picture – Drama</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Oppenheimer</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - All of Us Strangers, Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, The Zone of Interest</div></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Oppenheimer is a bold, thunderous, consuming cinematic experience from one of our best directors, Christopher Nolan. It has an amazing cast, a surprisingly pertinent screenplay, and a set of technical achievements that make it an awe-inspiring film to listen to and watch. It may go down as Nolan's magnum opus. It also was a box office phenomenon, and a reminder to the studios to always bank on your legends, and that movie goers are yearning for original storytelling on a grand scale. Oppenheimer filled that void for many, and the fact that it is one of the best films of the year on top of that only adds to is award worthiness. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Picture – Comedy/Musical</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - (TIE) Barbie and The Holdovers</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Air, American Fiction, Joy Ride, Poor Things, You Hurt My Feelings</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Remember what I said about original storytelling, and its impact on audiences? The other half of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, Barbie, was yet another great example of a studio taking a a chance and banking on one of our best, Greta Gerwig, to create a wholly original, beautiful, funny masterstroke. Everything about this project screamed disaster. She flipped the script on that narrative with easily one of the best films of the year. But I absolutely adored The Holdovers. I have always had a soft spot for Alexander Payne's warm, yet pertinent human dramadies (Sideways is a top ten film for me), and he once again nails every bit of this new classic. Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph are extraordinary, the script is sharp, and it was the one film this year that I didn't want to end. And when the credits rolled, I was sad to see it go. </div><div><div><div><br /></div></div></div></div><div><b><u>Best Picture - Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action/Horror</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Godzilla Minus One</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - In a relatively weak year for genre movies, especially as so many known properties failed to capture box office magic, a wonderful surprise hit theaters by the name of Godzilla Minus One. The first Godzilla film to ever be nominated for an Academy Award, this brilliant spectacle is the perfect blend of science fiction and horror, with a huge dose of history, grief, the trauma of war, and stunning visual effects. I don't know if it can win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but I am hoping for a wonderful surprise. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Picture – Animated</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Other Contenders</i> - The Boy and the Heron</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - The Peasants, Robot Dreams, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse</div><div><i><b>Commentary</b> - </i>A great year for animation, as two of the best, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Boy and the Heron battle it out for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. Either film winning will be a great moment, but I am partial to The Boy and the Heron. It is most likely Hayao Miyazaki's last film, and I have personally never given him an Awards Psychic Award. Plus, the film is another thoughtful, beautifully constructed piece from one of film's modern masters, and without the sentimental factor, is worthy of recognition. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Picture – Documentary</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Kokomo City</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - 20 Days in Mariupol, 32 Sounds, Four Daughters, The Mother of All Lies, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - It wasn't the best year for documentary films, despite some nice entries. But for me, I thought that Kokomo City was fantastic. Funny, emotional, with beautiful black and white cinematography, I felt like the film told an important story, gave us a look at the lives of black trans women, and a sobering look at the world of sex work. It was a creative, entertaining, and enlightening work that stood out to me among the bunch. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><u><b>Best Director</b></u></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Greta Gerwig “Barbie”</div><div></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Andrew Haigh "All of Us Are Strangers", Justine Triet "Anatomy of a Fall". Hayao Miyazaki "The Boy and the Heron", Alexander Payne “The Holdovers”, Christopher Nolan “Oppenheimer”, Celine Song “Past Lives”, Jonathan Glazer "The Zone of Interest"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - When Greta Gerwig was snubbed by the Academy's Director's branch, I was not really that surprised. The general Oscar-viewing public is going to have to recognize that this branch is esoteric, has a lot of international members, and has a sensibility that does not match up with the folks who loved Barbie. Love it or hate it, that is how it has been for a while, and will not change anytime soon. Then there was the backlash, then there was the backlash to the backlash, then there was the revival of the "men hating Barbie" crowd that loudly complained all summer while the film was a smash hit. What I hate about all of the mess that has been cause by this, is that it seems lost on people that Greta Gerwig's film is great, and that her directorial work was stunning. She pulled together a craft heavy film, with an original concept, and melded it together beautifully. Her vision on this film was singular, and yet, unlike some directorial movies, the sentiment, the performances, and the heart were never forgotten in the directorial flourishes. She has quickly become one of our best directors, and I cannot wait to see what she does next. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Actor – Drama</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Andrew Scott "All of Us Strangers"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Colman Domingo "Rustin", Cillian Murphy “Oppenheimer”, Frank Rogowski “Passages”</div><div></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - All of Us Strangers is a film that has really stuck with me long after viewing. It is so heartbreaking, so sad, that it at times feels like drowning (great film, but almost too much). But the thing I keep going back to is the devastating and brilliant performance of Andrew Scott. His childish relationship with his parents, his hesitance in accepting love, his sorrow when he loses it all. It is just a beautifully complex performance, and Scott nails it. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Actress – Drama</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - (TIE) Lily Gladstone “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Greta Lee “Past Lives”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Annette Bening "NYAD", Sandra Huller "Anatomy of a Fall", and Teyana Taylor “A Thousand and One”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Two of my favorite performances this year were Lily Gladstone and Greta Lee. Lily's pain and sorrow, and then ultimate triumph at the end was the heart and soul of a film that put a spotlight on the horrific trauma of the Osage. Lily's authenticity and passion shown though every scene, and it was Molly's story that was the one you cared about. Up against legends like DeNiro and DiCaprio, that is saying something. I also loved the beautiful and subtle performance of Greta Lee in Past Lives. She was the heart and soul of the film, and her struggle between the past and the future was handled with such grace and wit. I can't wait to see what both of these amazing women do next. </div></div><div><div><br /></div></div><div><b><u>Best Actor – Comedy/Musical</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Paul Giamatti “The Holdovers”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Jeffrey Wright "American Fiction", Matt Damon “Air”</div><div></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - I have loved Paul Giamatti for years, and The Holdovers is the perfect example of why he is one of our best actors. He was funny, neurotic, emotional, and managed to find depths to what could have easily been a shallow caricature. I know Cillian Murphy is going to win the Oscar (well-deserved by the way), but I am still secretly rooting for a surprise upset for a veteran who has never gotten the due he deserved.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Actress – Comedy/Musical</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Margot Robbie “Barbie”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Julia Louis-Dreyfus "You Hurt My Feelings" and Emma Stone "Poor Things"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - A lot of people decided that they were well-trained actors in response to Margot Robbie's Oscar snub. They said "she wasn't really that good", "her role wasn't a stretch", "she played a doll, not that much range". Blah, blah, blah. Anyone who saw Barbie knows that Margot Robbie pulled off an incredibly difficult role, and did so with humor and style. Also, Barbie's transformation from doll to human was handled with such deft by a talented actress. In lesser hands. it could have been a complete failure. But with Robbie at the helm, it was quite simply, brilliant. </div><div><br /></div></div><div><b><u>Best Supporting Actor</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Robert Downey Jr. “Oppenheimer”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Sterling K. Brown "American Fiction", Ryan Gosling “Barbie”, John Magaro "Past Lives", Dominic Sessa “The Holdovers”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary </i>- Robert Downey Jr. has had quite a career in Hollywood. A great first act, a tremendous fall, and one of the industry's most stunning comebacks. He disappeared into his role in Oppenheimer, showcasing just how good of a dramatic actor he can be, when given a project like this. Plus, I am a softy for career awards, and Downey is one of the great veterans who is well overdue for some worthy recognition. </div></div><div><div><br /></div></div><div><b><u>Best Supporting Actress</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Da'Vine Joy Randolph “The Holdovers”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Erika Alexander "American Fiction", Danielle Brooks "The Color Purple", America Ferrera "Barbie", Rachel McAdams "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret."</div><div></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - I have loved the work of Da'Vine Joy Randolph for several years now, and I am so thrilled to see her get big breakthrough, and win a well-deserved Oscar. Mary is the heart and soul of The Holdovers, and her magnetism, emotional center, and energy, propel the film is ways that help elevate it to greatness. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Voiceover/Motion Capture Performance</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Shameik Moore "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Jack Black "The Super Mario Bros. His work in Across the Spider-Verse conveyed so many great moments and emotions, and elevated a great work of animation. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Ensemble</u></b></div><div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - American Fiction</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Air, Barbie, Bottoms, The Color Purple, Joy Ride, Oppenheimer, Saltburn,Theater Camp</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander, Issa Rae, Leslie Uggams, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Adam Brody, and Keith David. American Fiction is a great ensemble piece, where each actor brings humor and depth to a fantastic film. </div></div><div><div><br /></div></div></div><div><b><u>Best Adapted Screenplay</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Cord Jefferson "American Fiction"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Andrew Haigh "All of Us Strangers", Christopher Nolan “Oppenheimer”, Tony McNamara "Poor Things"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary </i>- One of the sharpest scripts to come out in a long time is Cord Jefferson's funny, biting, and incredibly relevant work, American Fiction. It didn't hurt that he had an incredible ensemble, but Jefferson's insight into race, art, and family were some of the most pointed put on a screen in a long time. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Original Screenplay</u></b></div><div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winners </i> - Celine Song “Past Lives”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - David Hemingson “The Holdovers”, Justin Triet and Arthur Harari "Anatomy of a Fall", Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott “Bottoms”, Nicole Holofcener “You Hurt My Feelings”</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Celine Song's debut Past Lives is a top five film for me this year, mostly because of the wonderfully quiet, haunting, and human story about past love, and its effect on the present and the future. The humanity and love that Song infuses into every scene showcase a true talent that is just getting started. </div><div><br /></div></div><div><b><u>Best Cinematography</u></b></div><div><span style="font-family: Titillium Web;"><span style="background-color: white;"><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Hoyte van Hoytema "Oppenheimer"</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - </span>Rodrigo Prieto "Barbie", Matthew Libatique "Maestro", Łukasz Żal "The Zone of Interest"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Hoytema's stunning work in Oppenheimer moved the needle of cinematic achievement forward with his innovative cinematography. But the moment in Barbie when you her What Was I Made For? is a incredibly emotional experience. That scene, and that song, are the pivotal moment, and if you didn't cry you are hollow inside, or most likely a straight man. Either way, you missed out. Billie Eilish and Finneas once again proved that the power of song in film is singular and encompassing. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Production Design</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Sarah Greenwood "Barbie"</div><div><b><i>Runners Up</i> - </b>Asteroid City, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Sarah Greenwood's work in building the Barbie World was fun, inventive, submersive, and a brilliant example of how the production design can have such an incredible impact on the story and the characters. Technical categories should not stand alone, they should enhance the story. Barbie's production design does just that, with aplomb. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Sound</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Tarn Willers and Johnnie Burn "The Zone of Interest"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Ferrari, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Most of the films with the best sound this year were loud and epic. Surprisingly though, the best sound of the year is probably one of the quietest films to ever get an Oscar nod in this category. The Zone of Interest isn't about loud clanging and cars vrooming. It is about the impact that perfectly coordinated sound can have on a story. The Zone of Interest has some of the most disturbing sound occurring in the background of its almost mundane exterior. The screams and gunshots as the brutality of Auschwitz unfold are only mere haunting sounds while the family portrayed acts like it is nothing. This film is a brutal look at the complacency of so many in the eyes of horror, and the sound work in this film brings that horror to life in a subtle and disturbing way. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Visual Effects</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Winner</i> - Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima "Godzilla Minus One"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Runners Up</i> - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - See Best Picture - Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action/Horror</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Top 20 Films of 2023</u></b></div><div>1. Oppenheimer has won everything. PGA, SAG, DGA, BAFTA, Globe, most of the technical guilds, most of the critics groups. It has swept in a way that is undeniable. It hits the rare trifecta as well. It is beloved by critics, well-liked by the industry, and was part of the Barbenhemier box office phenomenon, grossing almost a billion dollars worldwide. It will win in a walk. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Director</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer"</div><div><b style="font-style: italic;">Could Win </b>- Justine Triet "Anatomy of A Fall" </div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Another lock you can bank on is Christopher Nolan finally winning the Best Director Oscar. He is incredibly well deserving of this honor, He is one of the finest directors working today, and many of his films, Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk, and now Oppenheimer, will long be remembered for their brilliance, ambition, and for the way they elevated the craft of film. Oppenheimer might be Nolan's magnum opus, and the Academy will reward him for it tomorrow night. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Actor</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Cillian Murphy "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Paul Giamatti "The Holdovers"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Paul Giamatti "The Holdovers"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - I had hoped, and through for a brief moment, that this was going to be Paul Giamatti's year to finally get his overdue recognition. But, after winning the Globe, SAG, and BAFTA, Cillian Murphy (who is fantastic, I'm not mad at all. A great actor in a great film) is going to win his first Oscar. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Actress</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Emma Stone "Poor Things"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Lily Gladstone "Killers of the Flower Moon"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Lily Gladstone "Killers of the Flower Moon"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - This is the one acting race that is a real nail-biter to the finish. Emma Stone won the BAFTA and Globe. Lily Gladstone won the Globe and SAG. Stone broke the tie with Critics Choice. In the BAFTA/SAG split we have seen it flip flop a lot over the last decade or so. Last year, Michelle Yeoh won SAG, Cate Blanchett won BAFTA, Yeoh took the Oscar. In 2020 Viola Davis won SAG, Francis McDormand won BAFTA, McDormand won the Oscar. In 2018, Glenn Close won SAG, Olivia Colman won BAFTA, Colman won the Oscar. In 2012 Jennifer Lawrence won SAG, Emmanuelle Riva won BAFTA, Lawrence won the Oscar. The back and forth goes on. I am leaning towards Emma Stone. I think the film is overall stronger, and her performance has more screen time. My head says stone, but my heart says Gladstone, who will make history, was brilliant, and would be a wonderful win for a great indie actor. We'll have to wait and see, but I am leaning towards Stone at the moment. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Supporting Actor</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Robert Downey Jr. "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Ryan Gosling "Barbie"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Robert Downey Jr. "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Robert Downey Jr. has won all the major precursors for his great performance in Oppenheimer. It also helps that he is also at his "career Oscar" point, where voters are ready to recognize a well overdue veteran movie star. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Supporting Actress</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The Holdovers"<br /></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Emily Blunt "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The Holdovers"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - The biggest lock of the night. One of the best performances of the year has swept everything (I mean everything) from day one of this Oscar season. A well-deserved Oscar will be the end to her Cinderella story. </div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465696218862690925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1723026823039624383.post-13055349143128533532024-03-08T13:48:00.003-05:002024-03-08T13:48:26.513-05:00The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature<b><u>Best Adapted Screenplay</u></b><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Cord Jefferson "American Fiction"</div><div><b style="font-style: italic;">Could Win</b> - Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer" or Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach "Barbie"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Cord Jefferson "American Fiction"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - When American Fiction won at BAFTA over Oppenheimer, that probably should have ended the race, still with the chance, now much smaller chance, of this category getting swept up in an Oppenheimer sweep. But neither film as faced Barbie before, which did well with screenplay awards early on when it was in Original. Also, with the "Greta was snubbed" momentum, she could upset in this category. I am sticking with American Fiction, but keep your eyes out for this one. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Original Screenplay</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Justine Triet and Arthur Harari "Anatomy of a Fall"</div><div><b><i>Could Win</i> - </b>David Hemingson "The Holdovers"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Celine Song "Past Lives"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - This race is probably tighter than most people think. Anatomy of a Fall came in strong after the Oscar nominations and won at BAFTA. So I moved it in. It just feels like folks want this film to win something, and this is the logical category to do so. But The Holdovers has won a lot of screenplay awards, and has its passionate followers. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Animated Feature</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win - </i>Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - The Boy and the Heron</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - The Boy and the Heron</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Two amazing films are vying for the win here. I am going with the more populist choice of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But after its BAFTA win, I am really considering moving The Boy and the Heron into the top spot. I personally would love this, just to see Hayao Miyazaki win another Oscar, but I think Spider-Man will eek it out at the finish line. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Documentary Feature</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - 20 Days in Mariupol</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Four Daughters</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - The Eternal Memory</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Like Nalvany last year, the timeliness of 20 Days in Mariupol will, I think, easily beat out the competition. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best International Feature</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom)</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Society of the Snow (Spain)</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom)</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Without Anatomy of a Fall in competition here, I think it's a safe bet to go with the only film of the bunch also nominated for Picture, Director and Screenplay. </div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465696218862690925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1723026823039624383.post-72794750018527406232024-03-08T13:23:00.003-05:002024-03-08T13:23:43.949-05:00The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design<b><u>Best Cinematography</u></b><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Hoyte Van Hoytema "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Rodrigo Prieto "Killers of the Flower Moon" and <span style="white-space: normal;">Robbie Ryan "Poor Things"</span></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Hoyte Van Hoytema "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Hoyte Van Hoytema can add Oscar Winner to his resume after winning BAFTA and ASC.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Costume Design</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Poor Things</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Barbie</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Barbie</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - I don't know how you pass up Barbie here, and it could easily win, as it probably represents the "most" costumes, which often wins. I still think a Barbie upset is possible here and in costume design, as the bigger Academy votes. </div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465696218862690925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1723026823039624383.post-57285457715423372962024-03-05T20:15:00.001-05:002024-03-05T20:15:09.136-05:00The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Original Score, Original Song, Sound, Visual Effects, and Shorts<b><u>Best Original Score</u></b><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Ludwig Göransson "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Robbie Robertson "Killers of the Flower Moon"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win </i>- Ludwig Göransson "Oppenheimer"</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Göransson's monumental achievement in Oppenheimer has been sweeping every major precursor it can. I think it wins in a walk.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Original Song</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Barbie - What Was I Made For?</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Barbie - I'm Just Ken</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Barbie - What Was I Made For?</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - What Was I Made For? won at the Globes with three Barbie songs nominated. It won the Grammy for Song of the Year, and is the emotional core of the film's finale. I'm Just Ken could surprise for being the fun one of the bunch, but I think Billie Eilish and Finneas win their second Oscar. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Sound</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - Oppenheimer</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - The Zone of Interest</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - The Zone of Interest</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - After BAFTA, this is one of the more compelling and interesting technical categories. I think The Zone of Interest would be a unique and worthy choice here, as the sound, while not as obvious, really plays in the entire message of the film in a brilliant way. But Oscar voters like a lot of Sound, Top Gun, Dune, Ford v. Ferrari, 1917, etc. Sound of Metal, which won during the pandemic year, gives us a bit of look into the possibility that a loud, clanging movie can win, but it is kind of an anomaly. I am going with the more obvious choice of Oppenheimer, which won at CAS and MPSE, and will be pleasantly surprised at an upset. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Visual Effects</u></b></div><div><b style="font-style: italic;">Will Win</b> - The Creator</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Could Win</i> - Godzilla Minus One, Mission:Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Should Win</i> - Godzilla Minus One</div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary</i> - Four out of the five BAFTA nominees crossed over, except the winner, Poor Things. This means that none of those four are particularly strong across the board. The other problem though is that the last Oscar winner to miss a BAFTA nod was What Dreams May Come in 1998. That is long streak to break. I want Godzilla Minus One to win, and I'm hoping that I am completely wrong here. But I think that one of those four will win, and The Creator, which is the most heady of the bunch (think Tenet, Interstellar), and has another nod in Sound (hard to win a solo winner), will win instead.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Best Animated Short</u></b></div><div><i style="font-weight: bold;">Will Win</i> - WAR IS OVER!
