Commentary - This early in the season, these races are really a toss-up, mostly based on name recognition and buzzed projects. Like Jessie Buckley potentially returning after surprising in the this race last year, for Sarah Polley's return to the big screen. Another great example is Michelle Williams for the Steven Spielberg semi-autobiographical film The Fablemans. Williams has been so close to Oscar glory, and this could finally be her year. Florian Zeller's follow-up to his Oscar-winning The Father gives recent winner Laura Dern another shot at Oscar gold. Jean Smart maybe known as a television and Emmy-winning legend, but if she brings her star power to Damien Chazelle's latest Babylon, and holds her own against Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, she could add Oscar Winner to her long list of accolades. Finally, She Said could be this year's All the President's Men or Spotlight, and veteran actress Patricia Clarkson could get a well overdue second Oscar nomination. But there are a lot of potential contenders including Clarkon's co-stars, Buckely's co-stars, Dern's co-star Vanessa Kirby, the actresses of David O. Russell's latest, George C. Wolff's latest, and Rian Johnson's Knives Out sequel. Previous winners and nominees Anne Hathaway, Whoopi Goldberg, Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Rachel McAdams, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, and Greta Gerwig are looking to return to the race. Throw in upstarts, veterans, and others looking for their first nod like Jamie Lee Curtis, Hong Chau, Stephanie Hsu, Julianne Nicholson, Claire Foy, Grisela Sicillani, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Margaret Qualley, and Sadie Sink, and this race is a fun one to watch.
