The Oscar Narrative: First 2022 Oscar Nomination Predictions - Best Actress

First Nomination Predictions
Lady Gaga "House of Gucci"
Jennifer Hudson "Respect"
Jennifer Lawrence "Don't Look Up"
Frances McDormand "The Tragedy of Macbeth"
Margot Robbie "Untitled David O. Russell"

Other Contenders - Jessica Chastain "The Eyes of Tammy Faye", Penelope Cruz "Parallell Mothers", Kirsten Dunst "The Power of the Dog", Rachel Zegler "West Side Story", Kristen Stewart "Spencer", Tessa Thompson "Passing", Nicole Kidman "Being the Ricardos", Alicia Vikander "Blue Bayou", Halle Berry "Bruised", Haley Bennett "Cyrano", Emilia Jones "CODA", Odessa Young "Mothering Sunday", Jodie Comer "The Last Duel", Emma Stone "Cruella", Mary Twala “This is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection", Martha Plimpton "Mass", Thomasin McKenzie "Last Nigh in Soho", Marion Cotillard "Annette", Taylour Paige "Zola", Rachel Sennott “Shiva Baby”, Gemma Chan "The Eternals", Catriona Balfe "Belfast", Melissa Barrera "In the Heights", Tilda Swinton "Memoria", Melissa McCarthy "The Starling", Scarlett Johansson "Black Widow", Emily Blunt "A Quiet Place Part II", Tang Wei "Decision to Leave", Patti Harrison "Together Together", Camila Cabello "Cinderella"

Commentary - This race might end up being my favorite, with so many talent actresses competing for this. Right now, I am leaning heavily on past winners/nominees at the moment, knowing that newcomers often crash the party. Lady Gaga could earn her second Oscar nod for acting (she is a winner for song already) for House of Gucci's, whose first trailer was promising to say the least, and she is clearly the star of the movie. Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin just has Oscar written all over it. Jennifer Lawrence could return for the star-studded new Adam McKay film. Margot Robbie has been hot with Oscar voters lately, and has a big role in the new David O'Russell film. Finally, just a year after winning her third Oscar, Frances McDormand sets out to tie Katherine Hepburn with The Tragedy of Macbeth. But this race has so much firepower. Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Baker is intriguing. Penelope Cruz plus Pedro Almodovar is always worth watching. Kirsten Dunst with Jane Campion could finally earn her an Oscar nod. Kristen Stewart as Diana might be her Oscar breakthrough. Newcomer Rachel Zegler could have a star-making turn in West Side Story. Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball might be too much for Oscars to ignore. There are also plenty of previous nominees and winners hoping to return including Alicia Vikander, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, Marion Cotillard, Tilda Swinton, Melissa McCarthy, and Scarlett Johansson. A bunch of younger actresses are hoping to breakthrough including Taylour Paige, Haley Bennett, Odessa Young, Thomasin McKenzie, Rachel Sennot, Patti Harrison, Gemma Chan, Melissa Barrera, and Camila Cabello. Veterans like Tang Wei, Jodie Comer, Martha Plimpton, and the legendary Mary Twala are hoping for recognition. Finally, I know it won't happen, but can someone give Emily Blunt an Oscar nod for God's sake?

The Oscar Narrative: First 2022 Oscar Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

First Nomination Predictions
Bradley Cooper "Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson"
Idris Elba "The Harder They Fall"
Corey Hawkins "The Tragedy of Macbeth"
Richard Jenkins "The Humans"
John David Washington "Untitled David O. Russell"

Other Contenders - Mark Rylance "Don't Look Up", Jonah Hill "Don't Look Up", Tyler Perry "Don't Look Up", J.K. Simmons "Being the Ricardos", Jesse Plemmons "The Power of the Dog", Bradley Whitford "Tick, Tick...Boom!", Steven Yeun "The Humans", Brendan Gleeson "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Willem Dafoe "Nightmare Alley", Richard Jenkins "Nightmare Alley", David Strathairn "Nightmare Alley", Michael Shannon "Untitled David O. Russell", Robert DeNiro "Untitled David O. Russell", Rami Malek "Untitled David O. Russell", Adam Driver "The Last Duel", Ben Affleck "The Last Duel", Ben Affleck "The Tender Bar", Jared Leto "House of Gucci", Al Pacino "House of Gucci", Benicio Del Toro "The French Dispatch", Lakeith Stanfield "The Harder They Fall", Delroy Lindo "The Harder They Fall", Jason Isaacs "Mass", Jamie Dornan "Belfast", Ciaran Hinds "Belfast", Colman Domingo "Zola", David Alvarez "West Side Story", Colin Firth "Mothering Sunday", Josh O'Connor "Mothering Sunday", Kaimana "Next Goal Wins", Simon Helberg "Annette", Kelvin Harrison Jr. "Cyrano", Benedict Wong "Nine Days", Oscar Isaac "Dune", Reed Birney "Mass", Billy Porter "Cinderella"

Commentary - So many big names in this race, hopefully the fall festivals start to sort out some of these contenders. John David Washington should have been nominated for BlacKkKlansman, and just continues to build a worthy profile. Teaming up with David O. Russell could finally get him a nomination. Corey Hawkins has also been on the rise lately, and if he can hold his own up against Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, I could see voters wanting to reward this rising star. Richard Jenkins has had several nominations now, and his role in the adaptation of The Humans could be his first win. Idris Elba is still waiting on Oscar love, but I will say, The Harder They Fall looks awesome, but does it look Oscar? I am going with yes. Finally, Bradley Cooper could return for Paul Thomas Anderson's latest. He has been such an awards magnet lately, I think voters are still on the Cooper train. Beyond those five, there are plenty of big names. Washington has several co-stars including previous winners Rami Malek and Robert DeNiro, and previous nominee Michael Shannon, who could join him, or take his spot. Adam McKay's latest Don't Look Up has a bunch of big names including Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, and Mark Rylance. Nightmare Alley, Guillermo Del Toro's first film since his Oscar win has names like Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, and David Strathairn. These large casts could take a lot of slots. There are plenty of previous winners and nominees that could return including, J.K. Simmons, Steven Yeun, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Benicio Del Toro, Lakeith Stanfield, and Colin Firth. Lots of veterans who have yet to make the cut are hoping their fortunes finally turn for the better including Brendan Gleeson, Ciaran Hinds, Jason Isaacs, Delroy Lindo, Bradley Whitford, Billy Porter, Jamie Dornan, Reed Birney, Colman Domingo, Benedict Wong, and Oscar Issac. Finally look out for newcomers Kaimana, David Alvarez, and recent Emmy nominee Josh O'Connor.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2022 Oscar Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

First 2022 Nomination Predictions
Cate Blanchett "Don't Look Up"
Glenn Close "Swan Song"
Ariana DeBose "West Side Story"
Meryl Streep "Don't Look Up"
Anya Taylor-Joy "Untitled David O. Russell"

Other Contenders - Mary J. Blige "Respect", Jayne Houdyshell "The Humans", Ruth Negga "Passing", Zoe Saldana "Untitled David O. Russell", Florence Pugh "Black Widow", Emma Thompson "Cruella", Judi Dench "Belfast", Olga Merediz "In the Heights", Rita Moreno "West Side Story", Toni Collette "Nightmare Alley", Ann Dowd "Mass", Zendaya "Dune", Rebecca Ferguson "Dune", Tilda Swinton "The French Dispatch", Elisabeth Moss "The French Dispatch", Julianne Moore "Dear Evan Hansen", Amy Adams "Dear Evan Hansen", Thomasin McKenzie "The Power of the Dog", Kirsten Dunst "The Power of the Dog", Audra McDonald "Respect", Olivia Colman "Mothering Sunday", Melissa Barrera "In the Heights", Zazie Beetz "The Harder They Fall", Awkwafina "Swan Song", Jodie Comer "The Last Duel", Aunjanue Ellis "King Richard", Vera Farmiga "The Many Saints of Newark", Julianne Nicholson "Blonde", Sally Hawkins "Spencer", Marlee Matlin "Coda"

Commentary - In the early race, if things turn out like we thing they might, this is going to be one heck of a race to the finish. The magnitude of talented actresses with potentials is astounding, and heartwarming considering the sometimes lack of contenders in the female races. Maybe we are starting to really see more women at the center of film. Adam McKay's Vice was incredibly divisive, and yet still managed to sweep the major categories in terms of nominations. Clearly this guy is on a high point with the Academy, and his next film Don't Look Up is a star-studded vehicle. I think the actors will continue to lavish praise, and both Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep, Oscar-winning legends, will continue to be awards magnets. Glenn Close got in for Hillbilly Elegy, so all bets are off. I think she may return for her role in Swan Song opposite Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris, which has a lot of potential. Anya Taylor-Joy could snag Emmy gold in a few months, but either way, her star is on the rise. Paired with David O. Russell could mean she is an Oscar nominee as well very soon. Finally, an up and coming star always crashes these races, and Ariana DeBose has been quickly climbing the radar. Her role in West Side Story, which has always been an awards magnet, could be her ticket to her first nod. Beyond that there are so many contenders, the possibilities seem endless. Jayne Houdyshell could take her Tony win for this role and make it an Oscar win. Recent nominee Mary J. Blige has a big role in Respect. Ruth Negga is getting a lot of buzz for Passing. and Olga Merediz is an early favorite for In the Heights. You have plenty of previous winners hoping to get back in including Emma Thompson, Judi Dench, Rita Moreno, Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, Olivia Colman, and Marlee Matlin. Plenty of nominees are also hoping to return including Florence Pugh, Toni Collette, Amy Adams, Vera Farmiga, and Sally Hawkins. Television stars, many of whom were nominated or won recent Emmys are hoping to make into the film awards including Ann Dowd, Zendaya, Elisabeth Moss, Zazie Beetz, Jodie Comer, Aunjanue Ellis, and Julianne Nicholson. Finally, don't count out up and coming stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Awkwafina, Thomasin McKenzie, and Melissa Barrerra, as well as veteran stars like Kirsten Dunst and Zoe Saldana. As I said, this race is going to be packed.

2021 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Drama Series

Best Drama Series
Bridgerton
The Crown
The Handmaid's Tale
Lovecraft Country
The Mandalorian
Perry Mason
Pose
This is Us

Other Contenders - The Boys, In Treatment, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, P-Valley

Commentary - The Crown is the front runner leading into Tuesday's nominations, and The Mandalorian is hoping to gain some ground. Pose and This is Us were bumped out, but in this year, with less bigger contenders, I expect them to return. The Handmaid's Tale dipped a lot last year (but still managed to get a Drama Series nod). This year it has had renewed critical attention and as less competition. I expect it to have a banner year. Lovecraft Country got cancelled, but it came after the voting ended. It had a lot of heat heading into nominations. I expect it will make the cut. Bridgerton, in a normal year, might be ignored. But it is such a huge hit, and there is a lot less competition. I expect it makes the cut. In the final slot, a lot of folks are picking The Boys. That would be an inspired choice from voters, but I wonder if the more sedate HBO drama Perry Mason, which should do much better down ballot in terms of acting, writing, directing, etc. is the better prediction. In Treatment could also get in, again HBO. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might be the favorite of the comic book adaptations, and P-Valley is a longshot, but would be a nice surprise.

2021 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Comedy Series

Best Comedy Series
black-ish
The Flight Attendant
Girls5Eva
Hacks
The Kominsky Method
Master of None
PEN15
Ted Lasso

Other Contenders - Cobra Kai, Mom, Superstore, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Mythic Quest, Dickinson, Made for Love, Emily in Paris, Kenan, Love Victor, Mr. Mayor

Commentary - The only returning nominee from last year is The Kominsky Method, and without Schitt's Creek, which swept every major award, all the major Comedy categories will have different winners this year. Kominsky will come back, and I am predicting that both black-ish (which dropped out last year), and Master of None (which has taken a couple of years off), will return to the race. The other five slots will be filled in with new contenders. Ted Lasso, The Flight Attendant, and Hacks are the front runners. All three have big names, great casts, excellent reviews, and tons of buzz. PEN15 is an odd show (a good one, but odd) that in past years was relegated to writing, where shows like that often find love. But in this year with a lot of big contenders missing out due to production halts, this show can get some Emmy love. In the final slot, I am going with a personal favorite, Girls5Eva. It is from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, who do well with Emmy voters. It is funny, warm, impeccably cast, and NBC has been pushing this series a lot to voters. But several of these contenders are vulnerable. Cobra Kai could do better than recent revival series. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist could overcome its cancellation during voting. Mythic Quest has its fans, Made for Love has HBO behind it, Emily in Paris has Netflix pushing it, Dickinson has gained steam, and Love Victor is a sweet comedy that premiered its second season in the middle of voting. Finally, I would love to see the final seasons of Mom and Superstore get some outgoing Emmy love.

2021 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Sterling K. Brown "This is Us"
Jonathan Majors "Lovecraft Country"
Josh O'Connor "The Crown"
Rene-Jean Page "Bridgerton"
Billy Porter "Pose"
Matthew Rhys "Perry Mason"

Other Contenders - Pedro Pascal "The Mandalorian", Joseph Fiennes "The Handmaid's Tale", Milo Ventimiglia "This is Us", Anthony Starr "The Boys", Karl Urban "The Boys", Jack Quaid "The Boys", Anthony Mackie "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier", Sebastian Stan "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"

Commentary - Sterling K. Brown and Billy Porter are the only returning nominees from last year. As previous winners in big Drama Series contenders, I'd be shocked if they were left out of this race. Josh O'Connor has been rising in the ranks, scored a SAG Nod, and is in the Best Drama Series front runner. I think he is in, and he could win. Rene-Jean Page leaving Bridgerton was a shock, and that, along with his SAG Nod, only boosts his chances in this category. Perry Mason may not have been the smash HBO was predicting, but if the odds play out, it will do very well with Emmy voters. I find it had to believe that they will pass up the chance to reward Matthew Rhys. That leaves one slot. I am sticking with Jonathan Majors, because there was a lot of buzz for Lovecraft Country, and its cancellation occurred after Emmy voting ended. But The Mandalorian is strong, and I could see them going for Pedro Pascal. Milo Ventimiglia and Joseph Fiennes are previous nominees for these characters and voters could easily return them to the race. Finally, if The Boys or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier breakthrough, their leads could be in play.

Best Actress in a Drama Series
Uzo Aduba "In Treatment"
Olivia Colman "The Crown"
Emma Corrin "The Crown"
Phoebe Dynevor "Bridgerton"
Elisabeth Moss "The Handmaid's Tale"
Jurnee Smollett "Lovecraft Country"

Other Contenders - MJ Rodriguez "Pose", Sarah Paulson "Ratched", Mandy Moore "This is Us", Aya Cash "The Boys"

Commentary - The Crown duo are locks, and the Emmy is probably between them. Elisabeth Moss is a perennial favorite, and the show got renewed critical attention this season. In Treatment is borderline for Best Drama Series, but never bet against the great Uzo Aduba who just won another Emmy last year. Jurnee Smollett is kind of in the same boat Majors is, where her nomination seemed like a given, and the cancellation happened after voting. Finally, I am putting in Phoebe Dynevor, because I think Bridgerton is popular with the actors. MJ Rodriguez might finally get in for Pose, Sarah Paulson is so popular she may be able to overcome the horribleness of Ratched, Aya Cash is fantastic, and Mandy Moore could easily return for This is Us.
