2020 Emmy Predictions: Best Writing and Directing in a Variety Series and Special

Best Directing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Glenn Weiss "The 73rd Annual Tony Awards"
Could Win - Pamela Fryman and Andy Fisher "Live In Front of a Studio Audience: 'All in the Family' and 'Good Times'"
Should Win - Hamish Hamilton "Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show Starring Jennifer Lopez And Shakira"
Commentary - Last year, Live in Front a Studio Audience lost to Springsteen on Broadway. This makes me wonder if perennial favorite Glenn Weiss, who just got a huge boost from directing the Democratic National Convention, is going to win over what looks like the more obvious favorite. It happened last yea, and Live had much more buzz.

Best Writing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Dave Chappelle "Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones"
Could Win - John Mulaney and Marika Sawyer "John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Brunch", Hannah Gadsby or Patton Oswalt.
Commentary - This category has always been good to stand up comics. That's why I think Dave Chappelle will do well here, as his special was the best of the bunch. I would watch out though for Mulaney, as that was a very clever special, as well as Hannah Gadsby and Patton Oswalt, who are recent winners in this category.

Best Directing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Don Roy King "Saturday Night Live - Host: Eddie Murphy"
Could Win - Dime Davis "A Black Lady Sketch Show - Born At Night, But Not Last Night"
Should Win - Dime Davis "A Black Lady Sketch Show - Born At Night, But Not Last Night"
Commentary - I was so excited to see Dime Davis get nominated for her amazing work on A Black Lady Sketch Show. I don't think she can take down the great Doy Roy King for directing the best episode of SNL's season with Eddie Murphy, but I am rooting for her.

Best Writing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Could Win - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Should Win - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Commentary - It is time for Emmy voters to pass the mantle to Trevor Noah for his great season. I fear though that they will continue to go with the same old same old for a while. I love John Oliver, but I'm ready for a new, well-deserved winner.
