The Oscar Narrative: Final Nomination Predictions - Best Actor

Final Nomination Predictions
Christian Bale "Vice"
Bradley Cooper "A Star is Born"
Rami Malek "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Viggo Mortensen "Green Book"
John David Washington "BlacKkKlansman"

Other Contenders - Ethan Hawke "First Reformed", Willem Dafoe "At Eternity's Gate", Steve Coogan "Stan & Ollie", John C. Reilly "Stan and Ollie"

Commentary - Four folks are locked: Bale, Cooper, Malek, and Mortensen, and SAG/BAFTA will determine who wins among that group (right now I think its Bale vs. Malek). That fifth slot is tricky. A lot of folks are still banking on Ethan Hawke. But he got no BAFTA, no SAG, and no Globe, and lost the Critics Choice to Bale. I just think if he was so popular we would have seen him pop up in this race (it's the same concern I have for Regina King in Supporting Actress). Willem Dafoe is a possibility, and after the Globes and BAFTA recognized John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan, respectively, I have them on the list just in case. For that fifth slot though, I am going with the SAG/Globe combination of John David Washington. If they really love this film as much as I think they do, then voters will probably not ignore its central performance.
