Well well, David Fincher is the one that sneaks in and gets the fifth slot. That means that GWTDT has gotten the PGA, WGA, and DGA, and Fincher beats out the likes of Spielberg, Taylor, Malick, and Miller. Taylor was a long shot, and The Help is still a powerful vehicle. But without the DGA nod, I think War Horse is in serious trouble, and The Tree of Life missing both VES and DGA (two strongpoints of the movie) is an even more troubling sign. There has been an idea floating around that there will be eight nominees. If War Horse stays, then I think the 8th slot goes to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Woody Allen "Midnight in Paris"
David Fincher "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Michel Hazanavicius "The Artist"
Alexander Payne "The Descendants"
Martin Scorsese "Hugo"
