Academy Invites 271 to Join Its Ranks
Every year, I can't wait to see the new list. It is nice to see last year's first time nominees/winners like Barkhad Abdi, Lupita Nyong'o and others. And of course there are those who make your mouth drop, usually because you cannot fathom how they have not been nominated yet. David Strathairn was the one that shocked me. He was nominated almost a decade ago, and has been steadily working in film since, and yet is just now being invited? Maybe he is one of those who keeps refusing like Hayao Miyazaki who was invited again this year (and will probably once again refuse). Either way this is always an interesting list that usually takes a few days and weeks to fully absorb. As always, visit www.oscars.org for up-to-date information about the Academy and the upcoming Oscars!

2014 MTV Movie Award Winners
Well, not all the winners are actually up yet because no one seems to know who won them, but with a few exceptions, I really got my ass kicked here in terms of my predictions. In my defense, there were some surprising winners, and also these are the MTV Movie Awards. You never know how this generation will vote (and the further I get away from it, the less I know). I will add the other categories winners as soon I figure out who they are. I will say this though. I wouldn't have minded missing every prediction if the show were at least incredibly entertaining, and yet in the end it was pretty uneventful, which is particularly surprising and kind of disappointing. Oh well, in the next weeks expect Tony and Daytime Emmy coverage as we get closer to the summer awards season!

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Movie of the Year
Will Win - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Could Win - The Wolf of Wall Street or American Hustle
Should Win - American Hustle or 12 Years a Slave
Commentary - Honestly, the nominations here are kind of baffling considering that it is the MTV Movie Awards. I mean 12 Years a Slave was an incredible film, but I find it hard to believe it was a favorite among this group of voters. Basically the only two that really appeal to this generation are The Hunger Games and The Hobbit, and the latter is just not going to happen. Wolf and Hustle have the outrageous factor that could play in their favor, but in the end I think this one is an easy bet. The first installment of the The Hunger Games had to go up against The Avengers. This year, it looks like smooth sailing.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Male Performance
Will Win - Leonardo DiCaprio "The Wolf of Wall Street"
Could Win - Josh Hutcherson "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Should Win - Matthew McConaguey "Dallas Buyers Club" or Chiwetel Ejiofor "12 Years a Slave"
Commentary - There is an interesting battle brewing here between the 90's/2000's generation and the new generation of the current decade. I am personally placing my bets on Leonardo DiCaprio. He is still incredibly popular, had two high-profile roles this past year, and when he lost the Oscar, social media blew up in anger. These angry Tweeters are the same folks, or many of the same folks, that vote for awards like the MTV Movie Awards. And while he is starting to show his age, I still think he has enough of a heart-throb status to get a win here. But do not discount the fresh face of Josh Hutcherson. And do not discount the power of The Hunger Games with the teens. The sure popularity of the film could spill over and favor Hutcherson.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Female Performance
Will Win - Jennifer Lawrence "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Should Win - Sandra Bullock "Gravity", Lupita Nyong'o "12 Years a Slave", or Amy Adams "American Hustle"
Could Win - Bullock, Adams, or Jennifer Aniston "We're the Millers"
Commentary - At first glance, particularly if Oscar watchers are doing the glancing, it would seem that the nominated (and winning performances) of Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams, and Lupita Nyong'o were the obvious front runners. But this is not the Oscars, it is the MTV Movie Awards, and honestly I will be shocked if anyone other than Jennifer Lawrence won this award. If it were for American Hustle, then the MTV voters and Oscar voters would merge, but alas it is for her star power turn in Catching Fire. And while that particular performance may not have the same aspirations of Bullock's, Nyong'o's, or Adams' (Or Lawrence's in Hustle), it is not actually a bad choice. It is the recognition that Lawrence is the biggest star in the world, and that is a fact.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Comedic Performance
Will Win - Kevin Hart "Ride Along"
Could Win/Should Win - Jonah Hill "The Wolf of Wall Street" or Melissa McCarthy "The Heat"
Commentary - This category looks like a three-way race to the finish. Melissa McCarthy is hilarious in The Heat, and does have the distinction of being the only woman in this race. And Jonah Hill is young enough to appeal to most of these voters, and has an Oscar nomination for his role to boost his resume. But right now, probably the biggest and most exposed star of the bunch is Kevin Hart. He is everywhere, he has crossover appeal, and is really funny. I think he takes the prize here.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Breakthrough Performance
Will Win - Margot Robbie "The Wolf of Wall Street"
Could Win - Will Poulter "We're The Millers", Miles Teller "The Spectacular Now", Michael B. Jordan "Fruitvale Station"
Should Win - Michael B. Jordan "Fruitvale Station" or Miles Teller "The Spectacular Now"
Commentary - Will Poulter won the BAFTA equivalent in the Rising Star Award, and is a hoot in We're the Millers. And both Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan are the worthy winners among the bunch, and both we're just in high profile buddy comedy with Zac Efron, so could also appeal to the MTV generation. But I think Margot Robbie will the victor here. She nails her sexy role in Wolf, and most importantly is the only female in the bunch. Don't discount the vote splitting in her favor.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Cameo Performance
Will Win/Should Win - Amy Poehler and Tina Fey "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues"
Could Win - Robert DeNiro "American Hustle", Rihanna "This is the End"
Commentary - Even for the MTV Generation, Robert DeNiro is a legend, and his cameo in American Hustle could earn him his second MTV Movie Award. And also don't count out the whole music tie in with this younger generation, so Rihanna in This is the End could also be a contender. But I think that the hilarious combination of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will end up taking the prize. They are both incredibly popular, and Anchorman 2 is surely taking home at least one of these things. This could be the place to reward it.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions - Best On-Screen Transformation
Will Win/Should Win - Matthew McConaughey "Dallas Buyers Club"
Could Win - Jared Leto "Dallas Buyers Club" or Elizabeth Banks "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Commentary - Right Matthew McConaughey is hot. He just won an Oscar, and gives an Emmy-worthy performance in True Detective. I think this will carry over to a worthy win here, especially considering how much weight he had to lose to play the part. But don't discount his co-star Leto, who is also right off an Oscar win, and could appeal to the MTV crowd due to his band 30 Seconds to Mars. The other possibility is that McConaughey and Leto split votes, and that the over-the-top makeup transformation of Elizabeth Banks in The Hunger Games takes the prize instead.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Fight
Will Win/Should Win - Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
Could Win - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or This is the End or The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Commentary - Most people are probably predicting that The Hunger Games will win this in a walk, or maybe even The Hobbit, because they are the two obvious action films. Not bad predictions, and honestly, I am probably looking at this category the wrong way, because I am not predicting either. I think that the uproarious fight in Anchorman 2, which is just absolutely ridiculous will be niche enough, and will be distinctive enough among the nominees to win instead.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions - Best Kiss
Will Win - Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence "American Hustle"
Should Win - Adams and Lawrence, or Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller "The Spectacular Now"
Could Win - Woodley/Teller, Really any of them.
Commentary - Once again, there doesn't seem to be a clear front runner in this category, but there two that stand out above the rest. The first is Woodley and Teller in The Spectacular Now, who capture true young love and have incredibly chemistry. Plus, they will probably hit it off with the teen crowd. The other is the one that will most likely win, simply for its audaciousness. The kiss between Adams and Lawrence wasn't even necessarily planned, but both of these talented actresses just went for it, and it just increased the insanity and the madness of Hustle, which was a good thing. I think it takes this one home.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Hero
Will Win - Chris Hemsworth "Thor: The Dark World"
Should Win - Robert Downey Jr. "Iron Man 3"
Could Win - Downey, Martin Freeman "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", Channing Tatum "White House Down"
Commentary - When Jennifer Lawrence was left off the list here, there was a lot of outrage, and rightfully so. Her film is the biggest of the bunch, and will probably will win the top prize, yet they couldn't make room for even one female? Alas, we are down to five male nominees. Downey has missed out here before, but is always a threat. Freeman won here last year, so he should no be discounted. And Channing Tatum is incredibly popular. But I think that Chris Hemsworth is the right age, the right height of popularity, and in a very popular film. I think that he will take home the prize.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Villain
Will Win - Benedict Cumberbatch "Star Trek Into Darkness"
Should Win - Barkhad Abdi "Captain Phillips"
Could Win - Abdi, Donald Sutherland "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Commentary - There is a good chance that The Hunger Games goes for a sweep, taking along Sutherland with it. That being said, I think that two other guys have a real shot. Barkhad Abdi is easily the best of the bunch, and while his stock is certainly on the rise after his well-deserved Oscar nomination. But I think that another rising star will finally get some stage time. Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the coolest guys working on television and in film today. His Sherlock is a huge hit, and after several high profile roles he is making an impact on American cinema. I think that in a relatively weak category, without a clear front runner, he will be a popular vote for the younger generation.

2014 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Scared as S*** Performance
Will Win - Brad Pitt "World War Z"
Could Win - Vera Farmiga "The Conjuring", Jessica Chastain "Mama", Rose Byrne "Insidious 2"
Should Win - Vera Farmiga "The Conjuring"
Commentary - I personally think that Vera Farmiga is great in everything, and even though I don't particularly like horror films, The Conjuring was certainly a step above the norm within the genre. And while Mama was not that great, Jessica Chastain is a great talent. Both are dark horses here, but they are up against a juggernaut at the MTV Movie Awards. And while The Conjuring and Mama certainly have their following, World War Z was a huge blockbuster, and I think that the teenage girls who make up the largest voting bloc will go for the hunk, and the film that they prefer.
