The Oscar Narrative: Final Nomination Predictions: Best Original Score, Original Song, Sound, and Visual Effects

Best Original Score
Daniel Blumberg "The Brutalist"
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross "Challengers"
Volker Bertelmann "Conclave"
Camille and Clément Ducol "Emilia Perez"
Kris Bowers "The Wild Robot"

Other Contenders - John Powell "Wicked", Robin Carolan "Nosferatu", Alberto Iglesias "The Room Next Door", Harry Gregson-Williams "Gladiator II", Hans Zimmer "Blitz"

Commentary - The music categories are always tricky because there really are not enough direct precursors. This one, I am simply going with a consensus. These five are the most rewarded across critics, four were BAFTA nods, all five were Golden Globe nominations (Dune Part II was the sixth, but not eligible). It just seems to fit. Watch out for the fifth BAFTA slot Nosferatu, as well as big names in this branch like Powell, Iglesias, Gregson-Williams, and Zimmer.

Best Original Song
Challengers - “Compress/Regress” - Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross & Luca Guadagnino,
Emilia Perez - “El Mal” - Clement Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard
Emilia Perez - "Mi Camino" - Clément Ducol, Camille
The Six Triple Eight - “The Journey” - Diane Warren
The Wild Robot - “Kiss the Sky” - Delacey, Jordan Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Maren Morris, Michael Pollack & Ali Tamposi

Other Contenders - Will & Harper - “Harper and Will Go West” - Sean Douglas, Kristen Wiig & Josh Greenbaum; Sing Sing - “Like a Bird” - Abraham Alexander, Brandon Marcel & Adrian Quesada;  Elton John: Never Too Late - “Never Too Late” - Elton John and Brandi Carlile

Commentary - Again, a challenging category to predict. We know Diane Warren is almost always a lock, and the two Emilia Perez songs have steadily both gotten recognition. The Wild Robot song is also wildly popular. I think the last slot is a toss up. I was going with the feel-good Harper and Will Go West. It is a buzzed documentary and the musicians often reward doc songs. I switch to Challengers because Reznor and Ross are so popular with this branch. Songs from Sing Sing and Elton John cannot be discounted as well.

Best Sound
A Complete Unknown
Dune Part II
Emilia Perez
Gladiator II
Wicked

Other Contenders - Blitz, Alien: Romulus, The Wild Robot, Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie à Deux

Commentary - A Complete Unknown did well with CAS and MPSE, despite missing BAFTA. Dune Part II, Wicked, and Gladiator II got BAFTA and either MPSE and CAS, or both. The last slot is interesting. Blitz got in a BAFTA, and that really could happen, but it has been dead in the water on the American side. Alien: Romulus, The Wild Robot, and Deadpool & Wolverine did very well with the guilds. But I know that sound is often reward to musicals, and despite Emilia Perez missing some precursors, I think it crosses into the top five at the finish line.

Best Visual Effects
Better Man
Dune Part II
Gladiator II
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Wicked

Other Contenders - Mufasa: The Lion King, Twisters, Alien: Romulus, Deadpool and Wolverine, Civil War

Commentary - I am sticking with the BAFTA five, which is often a better predictor for this category than the VES. But this is often a category with surprises. The VES went with Mufasa and Twisters. The first GCI Lion King won this category, so I am weary of a repeat nomination, but that film was much better received than this one. Twisters was the final slot for VES, and could surprise. But remember Godzilla Minus One got neither a VES or a BAFTA nod and won last year. It is just one of those wild categories.
