Top Ten Television Programs of 2024

10. Abbott Elementary - With its fourth season, you would think that Abbott Elementary, would, like many sitcoms at this point, start to dip in quality. Luckily, the writers and brilliant cast continue to hum along with a poignant, consistently funny that is one of television's best.

9. The Bear - The Bear is not a comedy, but it is still one of television's best shows. It is raw, emotional, with a fantastic class, and continues to be an intriguing premise.

8. English Teacher - The new hit comedy of the fall season, English Teacher. It is truly, outwardly, easily funny (so many "comedies" these days), has a great cast, and provides much zany fun. A great new entry.

7. True Detective: North Country - True Detective has been a bit of a drag since season 1, but a new director (the brilliant Issa Lopez), a dose of horror, brilliant setting, and a great cast led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. It was dark, compelling, and a great twist. A welcomed return to form.

6. X-Men '97 - So fun fact. When I was sick as a child, my mother would take me to our local video store, Shows to Go, and I would rent VHS tapes of the X-Men animated series. I loved that series. I revisited it as an adult and realized just how surprisingly deep and dark the series truly was. Revisiting the series was nostalgic heaven, and it really maintained the quality of the original.

5. Heartstopper - Heartstopper just continues to be such a heartwarming positive series that fills you up with joy. The cast are pitch perfect and the writing remains sharp.

4. Shogun - The reboot of Shogun was spectacular, with high production values, a fantastic cast, and a new spin on a classic that brought it into the 21st Century.

3. Somebody Somewhere - This is one of my favorite little series, and it just continues to shine. It's quirky characters, brilliantly funny and heartwarming story, and its incredible insistence on being charming episode after episode.

2. Baby Reindeer - Baby Reindeer was a breath of fresh air in this awards season. A darkly funny, yet horrifying real biographical story that so many folks got swept up in. Originality these days on television can be rare, but Baby Reindeer proved there is still so many great, and more importantly, unique stories to tell.

1. Hacks - One of my favorite moments of 2024 came at the Emmys, when Hacks upset The Bear and won the Best Comedy Series Emmy. What a deserved honor for an incredible show, and Season 3 was its best yet. It is funny, of course, but it hits deeper, and the central pair of Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder is simply spellbinding. An surprise fourth season is on the way, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our Deborah and Ava.
