Commentary - I start with five previous winners to play it safe. Damien Chazelle returns with a film history story, Steven Spielberg tells his own story, Mendes and Inarritu return with buzzed projects, and yes, James Cameron returns to Avatar. Laugh all you want to, this guy knows how to make impressive cinema. Some previous nominees and winners for Best Director populate the other contenders including David O. Russell, Darren Aronofsky, Noah Baumbach, and Ron Howard. Other previous Oscar nominees and winners include Sarah Polley, Ryan Coogler, Florian Zeller, Luca Guadagnino, Baz Luhrmann, Martin McDonough, and John Ridley. Also watch out for the Daniels, Todd Field, Maria Schrader, Ruben Ostlund, Gina Prince-Blythewood, James Gray, Kasi Lemons, Scott Cooper, Park Chanwook, and George C. Wolfe.
