The 66th American Cinema Editors (ACE) Eddie Award Nominations

The biggest surprise? No Spotlight! This is huge, because the last film to win Best Picture without an Eddie nomination was Driving Miss Daisy. Also the smaller films like Carol, Room, Trumbo, and Brooklyn, as well as outside contenders such as The Hateful Eight, Creed, and Straight Outta Compton missed as well. The biggest winners here? First is Star Wars of course. In its first guild award since it premiered, it beat out some stiff competition. Sicario's appearance here, combined with its nice showing at the Critics Choice Awards keeps it in the conversation outside of Roger Deakins potential nomination. Finally, Joy's appearance in the comedy category is an interesting nod. Many folks, including me, thought that Joy would be one of the year's biggest contenders. But dampened reviews have hurt its chances in a competitive year. The Eddie nomination proves that the industry has not forgotten David O. Russell's latest, and it could be one to watch for in the next ten days.
