Producers Guild of America (PGA) Award Nominations

So much to talk about, so little time. Let's star with the films that feel like safe Oscar bets so far (with BAFTA, DGA, and WGA still coming): Mad Max: Fury Road, The Big Short, Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, The Martian, The Revenant. Those are six solid slots. Now on to the rest of the mess. First, no Star Wars. After the Casting, Editing, and Art Director folks all went for it, I thought it could slip in here. I didn't. That doesn't mean that is Oscar hopes are dead, but it really needed this to solidify its chances. Other big misses: Carol and Room, neither of which has done so well in the guilds. Individual actors nominations at SAG but no ensemble, no Eddie, and now neither make the PGA cut. If either Todd Haynes or Lenny Abrahamson get into DGA, then they are still alive, same goes for J.J. Abrams. But both took a huge step backwards, as several films did the exact opposite. Sicario, for example, has defied the pundits' odds, and is now a Critics Choice Best Picture nominee, an Eddie and ADG nominee, and a PGA nominee. And Straight Outta Compton backs up its SAG nomination with a PGA nomination. Finally, Brooklyn jumps ahead of its indie rivals Carol and Room. The real surprise here is Ex Machina. I don't think this one will translate to the Academy, but it could lead to some nominations in other categories including Original Screenplay, some of the techs, and Alicia Vikander (who may get in here instead of The Danish Girl for Best Supporting Actress). For the record, I have updated by Best Picture predictions, and have switched Todd Haynes for Adam McKay. Spielberg seemed like the obvious choice, but The Big Short is so far the only film that has hit the trifecta of Eddie, SAG Ensemble, and PGA. A DGA nod would seal the deal, and could but it in the perfect position to win the big prize.
