Commentary - A tough race that, if recent years are any indication, could come down to the wire. Chloe Zhao and Paul Thomas Anderson are our front after rave reviews for Hamnet and One Battle After Another. Earlier contenders like Joachim Trier and Ryan Coogler remain strong as well, continuing to stay in the forefront through the fall festival season. Finally, while we don't have official reviews yet, critics are high on Josh Safdie and Marty Supreme. After those five, there are a lot of big contenders. Panahi won the Palme D'or, Filho is rising, and Chan-wook is overdue for some recognition. Previous nominees and winners like Katherine Bigelow, Yorgos Lanthimos, James Cameron, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Greengrass, and Richard Linklater are hoping to get back in the race. Nominees in other categories like Noah Baumbach, Clint Bentley, and Bradley Cooper are hoping to finally get a directing nod. Finally newcomers and veterans who have yet to cross into the top five include Benny Safdie, Jon M. Chu, Scott Cooper, Jim Jarmusch, Joseph Kosinski, and Zach Cregger.
