The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions - Best Director

Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions
Greta Gerwig "Barbie"
Martin Scorsese "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer"
Yorgos Lanthimos "Past Lives"
Jonathan Glazer "The Zone of Interest"

Other Contenders - Alexander Payne "The Holdovers", Bradley Cooper "Maestro", Celine Song "Past Lives", Cord Jefferson "American Fiction", Ava DuVernay "Origin", Justine Treit "Anatomy of a Fall", Blitz Bazawule "The Color Purple", Andrew Haigh "All of Us Strangers", Ben Affleck "Air", Ridley Scott "Napoleon", Sean Durkin "The Iron Claw", Sofia Coppola "Priscilla", Emerald Fennell "Saltburn", Jeff Nichols "The Bikeriders", Todd Haynes "May December", George C. Wolfe "Rustin", David Fincher "The Killer"

Commentary - This five still feels like a solid five, and I haven't moved in a while. But I am weary of Alexander Payne and Bradley Cooper, both previous nominees, and Cord Jefferson, as American Fiction continues to rise in terms of its buzz. Female directors like Celine Song, Ava DuVernay, Justine Triet, Sofia Coppola, and Emerald Fennell would be welcomed additions. The Color Purple has still not been seen, which concerns me. But Bazawule is still in the running until we know differently. Rounding out the category are previous Oscar nominees/winners like Ridley Scott, Ben Affleck, Todd Haynes, and David Fincher, and well-liked veterans like Sean Durkin, Jeff Nichols, and Andrew Haigh.
