The Oscar Narrative: The End

Even in season that seemed to last forever, there is still always this empty void at the end of Oscar season. At least we are already two months into the next season, so the wait won't be too long. But still, there is this void. It eventually fades as the summer blockbuster season and Cannes arrive (which this year will actually happen), then the Fall festivals, the critics, the guilds, and the the Oscars all over again. But first, let's finish out this wild and long 2020 (plus some of 2021) Oscar season.

The ceremony was actually able to happen. I have plenty of critiques. It was too long, the order of the last three awards was mind-boggling, especially when there was no guarantee of who was going to win Best Actor. It made for a crash and burn, or maybe just an anti-climatic finish. But I liked the Union Station concept, I liked the fact that we finally got to have an in-person awards show after the lackluster Globes, SAG, and BAFTA. So while not every decision made by the producers landed, at least they were able to make it work. I missed the big crowds, and the astonishing production design, and the thunderous standing ovations as much as everyone did, and I cannot wait to have that return. But in the meantime, I will take a slimmed down ceremony versus another Zoom awards show any day of the week.

Until the last gut-punch, the awards went mostly as planned. BAFTA, despite its juried system for nominations, ended up being spot on in terms of winners, with the exception of Cinematography (where the guild split). Most of the winners we either knew were going to happen or were possibilities. Frances McDormand was my third place for Best Actress, but we knew that the category was a toss-up, and if anyone is going to win three Best Actress trophies, it better be someone with the acting caliber of Frances McDormand. Then the gut-punch. I know that Anthony Hopkins is a legend. I know he was brilliant in The Father. I know that there is reasonable merit that says in a normal year that he deserved the award for his performance. Despite all of that, I really don't care. Chadwick Boseman is gone. This was the only chance for voters to reward someone not only for a fantastic role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, but for a career that was extraordinary, even in a short time. The producers clearly thought that it was going to happen, moving the award to the end so that Boseman's widow could have the final moment. Up until that point, the Oscars felt like after years of struggle, that they were moving in a more inclusive direction. A female solo screenwriter won the Oscar for the first time since 2007. The first black female makeup artists and hairstylists won an Oscar. The first woman of color won Best Director.  A female-led film won Best Picture for the first time since 2004. A variety of films from Nomadland to Mank to Minari to Promising Young Woman, to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, to Judas and the Black Messiah, and yes to The Father showed a voting body willing to spread the love to a variety of films that represent a variety of viewpoints and come from a diverse group of artists in terms of age, race, gender, etc. The last two awards, while going to two of my favorite actors of all time, and two that are considered the best, felt like a relic from a previous era. A reminder that certain categories have taller glass ceilings than others. Again, gut-punch is the perfect description for how I am feeling. I hate that is how it ended, because up until that point, I was pretty satisfied with the winners. Yuh-jung Youn was marevlous, and wins from Daniel Kaluuya, Chloe Zhao, Eric Messerschmidt, Ann Roth, Emerald Fennell, and Soul were all fantastically deserved. We have to remember that it is a contest, sometimes the right people win, sometimes someone else's right person wins instead.

The Oscars are never going to be perfect. This year, in particular, we know the ratings are going to be bad because none of the films were massive blockbusters. There were not massive blockbusters this year, the decks were stacked against them before they even had a chance. The ceremony is always going to have faults, there are winners that you are not going to like, and yes, some of the artists are going to be political. Yes some of them might say things you don't agree with, some of them may celebrate something you don't like.  All of this is to say, that people will always find reasons to hate on the Oscars. Some of its deserved, most of it is not. You know there was a moment during the pre-ceremony where there was a clip using the hashtag #thebigscreenisback. It celebrated the return of theaters, it celebrated the economic impact that theaters have on local communities, and it celebrated the magic of being a dark room with collective strangers sharing a unifying and unique experience. There is nothing to replace going to the movies, and that's why we have to keep fighting for the theatrical experience. This was the message of this clip, which lasted only a couple of minutes, but is still lingering with me today. It highlights two things I think people don't get about the Oscars. First, it is not just about the films, it is about an industry that produces billions of dollars in economic output every year. It also creates jobs. The same people complaining about politics are also the same ones that probably like when there is ample employment to stimulate the economy. The second thing I think they miss is that whether your favorite film or performance gets nominated or wins, at the end of the day the Oscars celebrate film. They celebrate that shared community experience, they celebrate that magic of exploring a different world in the dark house of cinema complexes. COVID-19 has reminded us that there is no substitute for human companionship, for community, for human connection, for those shared experiences. The Oscars reminded us, good or bad, love them or hate them, of the power of film, and the power that it has to bind us together and help us find that common humanity that we have so missed during this turbulent year.

Thank you all, again, for tuning into The Awards Psychic. You, the readers, make it worth while.
Year 12 begins soon, and I cannot wait to take this journey again with all of you. To quote Bob from Best Picture winner Nomadland, "One of the things I love most about this life is that there's no final goodbye. You know, I've met hundreds of people out here and I don't ever say a final goodbye. I always just say, I'll see you down the road."

See you guys soon.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Picture and Best Director

Best Picture
Will Win - Nomadland
Could Win - Minari or The Trial of the Chicago 7
Should Win - The last two years, for the first time in a long time, I actually predicted Best Picture correctly. I knew that Green Book and Parasite were going to win. I felt it. This year, conventional wisdom says Chloe Zhao's Nomadland is going to win. It won the PGA, DGA, Globe, and BAFTA. But preferential ballot wisdom tells us that that is not a guarantee. Look no further than La La Land, The Revenant, and 1917. But in each of those years, it was clear who the second place film was. They had the love and the screenplay and/or the actors like Green Book, Parasite, and Moonlight. The two films that have the best chance to beat Nomadland are Minari and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Both got SAG Ensemble nods, and Trial won. Both have screenplay nominations. Both also feel like the natural preferential ballot alternatives. But Minari has won almost nothing in the guilds except for YJ. Trial did win SAG and ACE Eddie, but has little beyond that. Most importantly, every Best Picture winner has either won Best Director, Best Screenplay, or both. You have to go back to 2002 and Chicago to find a Best Picture winner that won neither. Of course that film also won six awards, even if it missed those two. There is a good chance that Trial only wins one for Editing (and I am close to switching back to Sound of Metal). Minari is most likely going to win just YJ. Best Original Screenplay is in reach for both of them, but that award, with the exception of Sorkin at the Globe, which has a spotty crossover history with the Oscars, has been dominated by Emerald Fennell, who has won at BAFTA, Critics Choice, WGA, and Indie Spirits. I think its going to win at the Oscars as well. Now, if Chung or Sorkin win Original Screenplay, watch out, an upset is brewing. But if they don't, then my guess is that Nomadland, despite its potential troubles on the preferential ballot, is going to continue its winning streak. It is the best film of the bunch, has dominated the season, and without a clear number two, I have to bet on this season's number one.

Best Director
Will Win - Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"
Could Win - Lee Issac Chung "Minari"
Should Win - Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"
Commentary - Chloe Zhao has won everything, I mean everything. I think she is so solid, that I am not really sure who is second place. I put in Lee Isaac Chung as a potential spoiler, because Minari is a potential spoiler for Best Picture. But I would be absolutely jaw-dropped if they don't pick Chloe Zhao to make way overdue Oscar history.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Nomination Predictions - Best Actor and Actress

Best Actor
Will Win - Chadwick Boseman "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Could Win - Anthony Hopkins "The Father"
Should Win - Chadwick Boseman "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Commentary - I still think after winning the Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG that Chadwick Boseman is still going to win this Oscar. He deserves to win, not only for his performance, but also as a way to honor the legacy of one of the best. But Anthony Hopkins winning at BAFTA has given me pause. If there is an upset brewing, it is Hopkins, and it could be a tighter race than we thought.

Best Actress
Will Win - Viola Davis "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Could Win - Carey Mulligan "Promising Young Woman", Frances McDormand "Nomadland", or Andra Day "The United States vs. Billie Holiday"
Should Win - Davis or Mulligan
Commentary - I really like all five performances here, and since this race is such a mess, I will be happy no matter whose name is called out. All four major televised precursors split. I personally think McDormand won because BAFTA's jury nomination system left out Davis and Mulligan. But maybe she is just stronger than I think? Mulligan probably would have won BAFTA had she been nominated, but you never know. And while the ADG and ACE Eddie are not indicative of this race, the fact that Promising Young Woman lost both of those races that many felt were slam dunks, shows that it may not be as strong as we think. But neither Andra Day or Viola Davis are in Best Picture contenders compared to Mulligan and McDormand. But Davis, in particular, is an Oscar-winning legend who won at SAG. In this crazy race I do not purport to have the answer. I am sticking with Davis, but I think Mulligan is poised for an upset.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win - Daniel Kaluuya "Judas and the Black Messiah"
Could Win - Paul Raci "Sound of Metal" or Sacha Baron Cohen "The Trial of the Chicago 7"
Should Win - Daniel Kaluuya "Judas and the Black Messiah"
Commentary - Daniel Kaluuya has now won the SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice. But in none of those races did he face his own co-star Lakeith Stanfield, who got a well-deserved, yet still surprising nomination in this category. We have seen co-stars compete and it not affect the outcome of the race. Sam Rockwell won with Woody Harrelson nominated. Catherine Zeta-Jones won with Queen Latifah nominated. I think Kaluuya is strong enough to overcome his co-star. If he is not, watch out for Raci or Cohen, but I would be shocked if that actually happened.

Best Supporting Actress
Will Win - Yuh-jung Youn "Minari"
Could Win - Maria Bakalova "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and Glenn Close "Hillbilly Elegy"
Should Win - Yuh-jung Youn "Minari"
Commentary - YJ is so damn good in Minari. She is funny, touching, and just lights up the screen. She is also a Korean legend, and I think its great to see her finally get recognition on an international level. At one point it was Maria Bakalova that was set to win this, and then for awhile I thought that the power of Glenn Close would overcome her terrible movie. But after winning SAG and BAFTA, and Minari doing so well across the board, I think this is YJ's to lose.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature

Best Original Screenplay
Will Win - Emerald Fennell "Promising Young Woman"
Could Win - Aaron Sorkin "The Trial of the Chicago 7" or Lee Isaac Chung "Minari"
Should Win - Emerald Fennell "Promising Young Woman"
Commentary - Fennell has won all of the major precursors since Sorkin's Globe win. WGA and BAFTA, plus the most original concept of the bunch and a Best Picture nomination. I think she wins the Oscar as well. But watch out for Sorkin, a favorite, and Lee Isaac Chung. If Minari or The Trial of the Chicago 7 hope to dethrone Nomadland, which means they need screenplay attached, cause they ain't winning Director (Sorkin isn't nominated, so can't), they need to upset here to show some strength in a top category.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win - Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller "The Father"
Could Win - Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"
Should Win - Kemp Power "One Night in Miami"
Commentary - In the battle between The Father and Nomadland, The Father pulled ahead when it won the BAFTA. Neither were eligible for WGA, so that is really the only crossover precursor that we have to go with. Nomadland is still the Best Picture front runner, and could easily win. But I think it will be seen by voters as a directorial movie, and Zeller's adaptation will be rewarded for its script.

Best Animated Feature
Will Win- Soul
Could Win - Wolfwalkers
Should Win - Soul
Commentary - Soul has won everything, is the only nominee with multiple nominations (and could win other categories), is backed by Pixar, and is easily the best of the bunch. I would be jaw-dropped if anything else won this category.

Best Documentary Feature
Will Win - My Octopus Teacher
Could Win - Time or Crip Camp
Should Win - Time
Commentary - Time is my favorite documentary of the year, and I think it should win this award. But My Octopus Teacher is beautifully done, has done well with precursors, and is this year's feel-good documentary that often does well with Oscar voters. I think it wins in race with five great choices.

Best International Feature
Will Win - Another Round (Denmark)
Could Win - Collective (Romania)
Should Win - Another Round (Denmark)
Commentary - I knew Another Round was strong going into the Oscars. Then it got a Best Director nod beat out Minari at BAFTA. This film is really strong, and will walk away with this Oscar.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Visual Effects

Best Cinematography
Will Win - Joshua James Richards "Nomadland"
Could Win - Erik Messerschmidt "Mank"
Should Win - Nomadland or Mank
Commentary - This whole season, including BAFTA, Nomadland has been cruising to an Oscar for Best Cinematography. Then this weekend, the ASC threw us a curveball with Mank beating out the front runner. This isn't too surprising, I'm honestly surprised that Mank, with its brilliant black and white shots, hasn't challenged Nomadland, an amazingly shot film in its own right. That being said though, the ASC has often gone its own way over the years, and is not the most reliable Oscar predictor. The best predictor, a streak that has held up since Life of Pi in 2012 has been BAFTA, so I am sticking with Nomadland, although this race has just got more interesting.

Best Costume Design
Will Win - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Could Win - Mank, Emma, or Mulan
Should Win - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Commentary - The costumes of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, designed by the legendary, Oscar-winning Ann Roth, have done amazingly well throughout this season including winning the CDG period award and BAFTA. Mank, Emma, and Mulan (who won the CDG fantasy award) are all possibilities, but I would be shocked if Ma Rainey's lost here.

Best Film Editing
Will Win - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Could Win - Sound of Metal
Should Win - Sound of Metal
Commentary - Sound of Metal won the BAFTA, which had me leaning towards it for the Oscar. Then the ACE Eddie went to Trial. In a tough race, I am leaning towards Trial, as the stronger BP contender. But this is one I could switch, because at BAFTA, that was everyone voting vs. just the editors.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Will Win - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Could Win - Hillbilly Elegy
Should Win - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Commentary - Like in Costume Design, Ma Rainey has dominated this category, winning BAFTA and the Makeup and Hairstyling Guild. Viola Davis' transformation alone is worthy. I think it wins in a walk.

Best Production Design
Will Win - Mank
Could Win - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Should Win - Mank
Commentary - Mank's recreation of the Golden Age of Hollywood was stunning. It won at ADG and BAFTA. I'm also glad that this film doesn't walk away empty-handed. I think that as time goes on, Mank will be remembered more fondly, and it's nice to think that voters recognized it in some way.

Best Visual Effects
Will Win - Tenet
Could Win - The Midnight Sky or Mulan
Should Win - Tenet
Commentary -  This category has the few blockbusters in this crazy year, but no Best Picture nominees. When this happens, you can have an Ex Machina surprise. The Midnight Sky did well with VES and Tenet won at BAFTA. Tenet was a bit disappointing, but I think that it is the biggest name of the bunch and has the broader appeal of the five. But don't be surprised if there is a surprise in an unpredictable year.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Original Score, Original Song, Sound, and the Shorts

Best Original Score
Will Win - Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste "Soul"
Could Win - Emile Mosseri "Minari"
Should Win - Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste "Soul"
Commentary - The music categories don't have precursors, but usually this race settles in on a winner. This year, it has been settled for months, as Soul has cruised through almost every major award, and is easily the best of the bunch. I had to go back to the nomination list to see who the other four were, because I could not remember. That's how solid Reznor, Ross, and Batiste are going into next week's ceremony.

Best Original Song
Will Win - Judas and the Black Messiah - Fight For You
Could Win - One Night in Miami - Speak Now
Should Win - One Night in Miami - Speak Now
Commentary - Unlike Score, this race often has its surprises and upsets. Speak Now was the favorite for a long time, and it's an excellent song. You also have Diane Warren (who has still not won yet), and the Husavik song which is just crazy enough that voters might go for it. But when I saw that song from Judas and the Black Messiah, something just told me it was the one to beat. The film came in strong, it is nominated for Best Picture, unlike One Night in Miami. The song is written by H.E.R. who just won Song of the Year in an upset at the Grammys, and rocked out the Super Bowl. She is on voters' minds (of course so is Leslie Odom Jr., who is a double nominee). This song is also timely, really striking a nerve with all of the protests for justice that have rocked and uplifted this country over the last year. Speak Now is probably the front runner, and I love it, but I am predicting an upset.

Best Sound
Will Win - Sound of Metal
Could Win - Soul
Should Win - Soul or Sound of Metal
Commentary - I really hate it for the sound guys that these two crafts got combined into one category. Of course, I also understand that most voters had no idea the difference between those two categories. It's a catch-22. But I digress. Sound of Metal won at the CAS Awards last night and won at BAFTA. It is clearly the front runner, and its sound work was impeccable. But I would watch out for Soul. Musicals and music films did well in the Sound Mixing category in the past, and it won its category at CAS. It could be a spoiler.
