2025 AARP Movies for Grownup Award Nominations

Best Picture
Conclave: Thrillers don’t come any smarter than Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy screenwriter Peter Straughan’s adaptation of Thomas Harris’ book about a ruthless game of thrones when the Pope dies and the Vatican authorities choose a successor.

Emilia Pérez: A lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) helps a cartel kingpin find a new life, a new name—and a new gender. Critic Bilge Ebiri called it “a cross between Mrs. Doubtfire and Sicario.”

Gladiator II: The sequel to the 2001 best picture Oscar winner features Denzel Washington, 69, as a rich man who supplies gory Roman games with gladiators.

September 5: Steven Spielberg’s 2005 Munich dramatized the hunt for the terrorists who struck the 1972 Munich Olympics, but this pulse-pounder directed by Tim Fehlbaum puts you in the minds of the ABC Sports crew that had to show it to the world.

A Complete Unknown: Timothée Chalamet plays the young Bob Dylan going electric, in a film that will electrify some fans and outrage others—but once upon a time, he looked so fine, didn’t he?
picture from the filming of the gladiator movie where two actors are laughing and the director is standing in the background

Best Director
Jacques Audiard, 72, Emilia Pérez: Who else had the audacity to make a musical that’s also a soap opera that’s also a tense crime drama?

Edward Berger, 54, Conclave: The director of the World War I epic All Quiet on the Western Front depicts a more secret battlefield: the inner sanctum of the Vatican.

Ridley Scott, 87, Gladiator II: The four-time Oscar-nominated director of Blade Runner is still slaying the competition in the Colosseum that is Hollywood.

Pedro Almodóvar, 75, The Room Next Door: In the Spanish master’s first feature film in English, old friends (Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, both 64) reunite after one is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

James Mangold, 60, A Complete Unknown: He immortalized Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, and now he has brought back the young Bob Dylan, along with the 1960s folk scene.

Best Actor
Colman Domingo, 55, Sing Sing: Acting opposite actual ex-convicts, Domingo plays a prisoner who joins a theater group that turns troubled lives around through drama.

Ralph Fiennes, 61, Conclave: Fiennes takes us into the soul of a man painfully interrogating his flawed fellow clergymen, and his own faith.

Daniel Craig, 56, Queer: In a psychedelic adaptation of William Burroughs’ autobiographical novel, the James Bond star plays a war vet who whisks his lover from Mexico to South America in search of a magic tea to enable him to read the guy’s mind and see if he cares about him.

Jude Law, 51, The Order: Law plays an FBI agent hunting a terrifying neo-Nazi gang in the remote Pacific Northwest. The story is ripped from real 1980s headlines.

Adrien Brody, 51, The Brutalist: His visionary architect character, a Holocaust survivor who makes his masterpiece in Pennsylvania, is haunted by the American Dream.

Best Actress
Demi Moore, 62, The Substance: She daringly plays an actress who takes a youth potion with horrific consequences (and biting commentary about ageism).

Marianne Jean-Baptiste, 57, Hard Truths: An Oscar nominee (Secrets & Lies, 1996), she plays a human tornado who vents her rage on everyone in her path, and her performance makes us feel where all that anger’s coming from.

June Squibb, 95, Thelma: At 84, she got an Oscar nomination for Nebraska. Now she aces her first lead role, as a phone-scam victim who—inspired by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible—pursues the criminal. And she did her own stunts!

Nicole Kidman, 57, Babygirl: Kidman nails the role of a CEO who risks all for a sizzling fling with a 20-something intern (Harris Dickinson).

Pamela Anderson, 57, The Last Showgirl: The Baywatch veteran is seriously good as a Las Vegas dancer in hard times, defiantly shouting, “I’m 57, and I’m beautiful, you son of a bitch!” The Toronto International Film Festival audience went wild.

Best TV Series or Limited Series
Shōgun: The Emmy-hogging show about the 16th-century ruler who united Japan is a win for Hiroyuki Sanada, 64, its coproducer and titular star. He used to be known as the Tom Cruise of Japan. Now he’s the hottest new talent in Hollywood.

Hacks: Jean Smart, 73, kept her hit show fresh by reaching deeper into her stand-up comic character’s intergenerational love-hate relationship with her protégée (Hannah Einbinder).

The Crown: In the royal drama’s finale, Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Princess Margaret (Lesley Manville, 68) die, a melancholy, moving conclusion.

Slow Horses: Oscar winner Gary Oldman, 66; Oscar nominees Kristin Scott Thomas, 64; and Jonathan Pryce, 77, are superb. Nobody on TV has more fun than Oldman as the slovenly, exuberantly insulting boss of an underdog British spy team.

Palm Royale: Kristen Wiig, 51, is funny as a 1960s Florida social climber blocked by locals, but Carol Burnett is even better as a grande dame who speaks gibberish, yet makes her feelings known. Her performance made her, at 91, the oldest Emmy comedy actress nominee in history.

Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Winner: Glenn Close
Close proves that a Career Achievement winner need not be one gazing back on past glory (which in her case includes scads of major award nominations and wins). She starred in the 2024 Netflix horror hit The Deliverance and will be featured in both the upcoming Knives Out mystery Wake Up Dead Man and Ryan Murphy’s Hulu legal drama All’s Fair.

Other Contenders - Sing Sing, Nickel Boys, Nosferatu, Juror #2, I'm Still Here, All We Imagine as Light, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Challengers, Hard Truths, The Apprentice, A Different Man, Gladiator II,

Commentary - I feel pretty good about seven of the contenders: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune Part I, Emilia Perez, and Wicked. The last three slots are tricky. After PGA and landing that BAFTA directing nod, I am going with The Substance. I think it is going to get a lot of nods (see below), and despite my hesitations of dark comedy horror getting a BP Nod, it has continued to prove me wrong. The last two slots, I am going lazy and sticking with the PGA ten. A Real Pain feels more solid, with Culkin leading the supporting actor race and PGA and WGA nods. September 5...I have no idea. It will do well with the Jewish voting bloc of the Academy, is a good film, and has snuck into races of ten (including Critics Choice) a few times. I wanted Sing Sing or Nickel Boys to break through, and a lot of folks still have hope. I think Sing Sing is the stronger of the two, but neither has hit enough precursors to make me feel confident. I think there are some dark horses left. Foreign contenders like I'm Still Here, All We Imagine as Light, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig might fare better with the increasingly international Academy than they did with the more populist American guilds. Nosferatu and Gladiator II are going to get a lot of technical nods. If one of them pops into screenplay or director, it could signal their strength. Juror #2 is a great Clint Eastwood movie, and was shoved to the side by WB. Rumor has it that it has a lot more supporters than we initially thought. Outliers like Hard Truths, Challengers, The Apprentice, and A Different Man could also surprise. In a year where there are not a solid ten, expect the unexpected (think A Blind Side and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close).

Best Director
Sean Baker "Anora"
Brady Corbet "The Brutalist"
Edward Berger "Conclave"
Jacques Audiard "Emilia Perez"
Coralie Fargeat "The Substance"

Other Contenders - Denis Villeneuve "Dune Part II", James Mangold "A Complete Unknown", Payal Kapadia "All We Imagine as Light", Jon M. Chu "Wicked", RaMell Ross "Nickel Boys", Clint Eastwood "Juror #2"

Commentary - Four contenders have hit all the major precursors: Baker, Corbet, Berger, and Audiard. They also all fit into the Director's Branch aesthetic. The last slot is a toss up. The DGA went with Mangold. I would love to see him finally get long overdue recognition, but I feel like A Complete Unknown is too populist for this esoteric group. Denis Villeneuve and Coralie Fargeat made it into the BAFTA six. After Villeneuve was snubbed for Part 1, I wonder if he can make it in this time (did this branch realize the error of their ways?) I think the incredibly stylish, shocking, and dark work of Fargeat will surprise in the fifth slot. Also watch out for Payal Kapadia (Globe nod), Jon M. Chu (Critics Choice), RaMell Ross (a lot of awards, could surprise), and yes the legendary Clint Eastwood. If there is a groundswell of support and it may be his last movie, he could surprise one more time.

Best Actor
Adrien Brody "The Brutalist"
Timothee Chalamet "A Complete Unknown"
Colman Domingo "Sing Sing"
Ralph Fiennes "Conclave"
Sebastian Stan "The Apprentice"

Other Contenders - Daniel Craig "Queer", Sebastian Stan "A Different Man", Hugh Grant "Heretic"

Commentary - Again, four guys locked, and a toss up fifth slot. Brody, Chalamet, Domingo, and Fiennes all feel safe. I had Daniel Craig forever, and he got the SAG Nod, which was huge. But after Sebastian Stan made it in for The Apprentice at BAFTA, I switch them out. Stan has potential vote splitting with A Different Man, but the political timeliness of that role seems apt for last minute voters. Also watch out for Hugh Grant. He keeps popping up and could surprise for Heretic.

Best Actress
Cynthia Erivo "Wicked"
Karla Sofia Gascon "Emilia Perez"
Mikey Madison "Anora"
Demi Moore "The Substance"
Fernanda Torres "I'm Still Here"

Other Contenders - Pamela Anderson "The Last Showgirl", Marianne Jean-Baptiste "Hard Truths", Angelina Jolie "Maria"

Commentary - Can you see the theme here? Four have hit every major precursors: Erivo, Gascon, Madison, and Moore. Then there is that intriguing last slot, which I think has four potentials. Pamela Anderson has the story, and SAG And the Globe nods. Plus, with Jamie Lee Curtis a real potential in Supporting, and her incredible campaign, it could bring Pamela with her into the mix. Marianne Jean-Baptiste is fantastic in Hard Truths, and has the BAFTA nod, but that film is just not as strong as it should be at this point. I also think Angelina Jolie could make a comeback. Her film being on Netflix means a lot of folks have seen it, and she is incredibly good in the film. I am going with Fernanda Torres. I think her Globe win, and emotional speech attracted voters to see the film, and she will be one of those rare contenders that can miss a BAFTA and SAG and still grab a slot.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress

Best Supporting Actor
Kieran Culkin "A Real Pain"
Yura Borisov "Anora"
Edward Norton "A Complete Unknown"
Guy Pearce "The Brutalist"
Jeremy Strong "The Apprentice"

Other Contenders - Clarence Maclin "Sing Sing", Jonathan Bailey "Wicked", Denzel Washington "Gladiator II", Peter Saarsgard "September 5"

Commentary - A race with seven contenders that have SAG and BAFTA. Four crossed both award ceremonies: Culkin, Borisov, Norton, and Strong. The last slot could be interesting. SAG went for Jonathan Bailey, and BAFTA went for Guy Pearce and Clarence Maclin. I really hope that Maclin makes it into the final five, but I think the The Brutalist will be popular enough to bring Pearce his first Oscar nomination.

Best Supporting Actress
Jamie Lee Curtis "The Last Showgirl"
Ariana Grande "Wicked"
Felicity Jones "The Brutalist"
Isabella Rossellini "Conclave"
Zoe Saldana "Emilia Perez"

Other Contenders - Monica Barbaro "A Complete Unknown", Selena Gomez "Emilia Perez", Danielle Deadwyler "The Piano Lesson", Margaret Qualley "The Substance"

Commentary - I feel like this category is what my grandmother used to call "A mell of a hess". To be honest, the only two I feel confident about are Zoe Saldana and Ariana Grande. Other than that, it really is a toss up for the last three slots between seven contenders. Jamie Lee Curtis is still not being predicted by a lot of folks, and I kind of get it. This feels like the contender that gets left off. But "afterglow nods" as they are called are real, she is a legend, she has been very public facing with the wildfire relief, and has been campaigning her heart out for this film. She is also the only one besides Grande and Saldana that got both BAFTA and SAG, showing support. I put her in. The last three slots are tricky. I think Danielle Deadwyler is going to miss again. SAG loves Netflix and her, but that film is dead in the water elsewhere. I really thought Margaret Qualley was in, but missing at SAG And BAFTA is not good, especially since Demi got in. She needs the film's popularity and a BP Nod to push her back into the race (kind of like Regina King a couple of years ago). Selena Gomez got BAFTA and Golden Globe, and could easily sneak in with the popularity of Emilia Perez. Monica Barbaro surprised at SAG, and the film is strong. I am (Currently) going with Felicity Jones. The Brutalist did well at BAFTA with the actors, and she is a previous nominee. In the final slot, despite a shocking SAG snub, I am going with Isabella Rossellini. He is a legend, her film is incredibly popular, and other than SAG, she hit every other mark.
