Commentary - After all the uproar over last year's exclusion of female directors, this year has a plethora of options for Oscar voters to correct their mistake. First and foremost is Chloe Zhao, whose Nomadland is set to be one of the biggest contenders, with Zhao's direction one of the movie's highlights. I also think Regina King can get in as well. One Night in Miami is apparently a powerful film, and her popularity (including a recent Oscar) is unmatched. Aaron Sorkin has won an Oscar for screenplay, and this year, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is getting enough buzz that he could be nominated for director. Mank looks to be the most creative and visually stunning film of the year, so David Fincher might finally get his well overdue Oscar. Finally, the stunning first looks at Ma Rainey's Black Bottom make me think that theater legend George C. Wolfe might be a huge contender for his visual vision. But Paul Greengrass, Ron Howard, and Spike Lee are right there lurking. All three are previous nominees/winners in big projects. I also would watch out for previous Oscar nominees/winners like Sofia Coppola, Lee Daniels, Pete Docter, Christopher Nolan, and Armando Iannucci. Also first timers like Shaka King, Florian Zeller, Lee Isaac Chun, Ryan Murphy, Francis Lee, and Patty Jenkins are hoping to breakthrough.
