Golden Globe Winner Predictions

Best Picture - Drama
Will Win - The Irishman
Could Win - Joker, 1917, or Marriage Story
Should Win - The Irishman
Commentary - I still think that this is The Irishman's to lose. But do I think it is a slam dunk? No. It has gotten some negativity coming its way from the Internet world (not that Globes voters tend to care). The only film I don't see winning is The Two Popes, which has died in terms of buzz (and needs the guilds next week to go to bat for it to stay alive). 1917 could win, as it is finally gaining steam. Marriage Story did well with voters, and is still a huge Oscar contender. Finally, I think that the real challenger here is Joker. It is this year's Bohemian Rhapsody. It may not have been a critical favorite, but it is a monster success, and it would be a game-changing win for the film, which is hoping to rake in Oscar nominations. Globes voters like to make a statement. Joker would be one hell of a statement.

Best Picture - Comedy/Musical
Will Win - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Could Win - Jojo Rabbit or Knives Out
Should Win - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Commentary - Jojo Rabbit and Knives Out have their fans, and are both great comedies. But I would be shocked to see anything other than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood take this award. It is so brilliant, so funny, and honestly, I think it might be the Oscar front runner. It is going to have a great night at the Globes, capped by this win.

Best Actor - Drama
Will Win - Joaquin Phoenix "Joker"
Could Win - Adam Driver "Marriage Story" or Antonio Banderas "Pain & Glory"
Should Win - If Joker doesn't win, or even if it does win Best Picture, I think they are going to find a way to reward this film. Phoenix is the obvious choice. Of course Banderas could win kind of like Huppert a few years ago, and in terms of stardom, no one is more popular right now than Adam Driver. But I think Phoenix is the type of win that Globe voters love.

Best Actress - Drama
Will Win - Renee Zellweger "Judy"
Could Win - Scarlett Johansson "Marriage Story"
Should Win - Zellweger's story, and her glitzy role as Judy Garland is right up the Globes alley. It doesn't hurt that it is a fantastic role, and that she is magnificent in it. But watch out for Scarlett Johansson, who is one of the biggest movie stars in the world right now, which Globe voters love.

Best Actor - Comedy/Musical
Will Win - Leonardo DiCaprio "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"
Could Win - Eddie Murphy "Dolemite is My Name"or Taron Egerton "Rocketman"
Should Win - I would love to see Eddie Murphy win the Globe here, and launch him to a well-deserved Oscar nomination. He is great in Dolemite, and deserves this. But he is up against Globes favorite Leonardo DiCaprio, in a film that is probably going to win Best Picture. That is hard to beat. Also, watch out for Taron Egerton. I think that he will get a BAFTA nod, and then have SAG, BAFTA, and the Globe, which puts him on track to get an Oscar nomination. He could be this year's Rami Malek.

Best Actress - Comedy/Musical
Will Win - Awkwafina "The Farewell"
Could Win - Beanie Feldstein "Booksmart" or Ana De Armas "Knives Out"
Should Win - Awkwafina or Feldstein
Commentary - Awkwafina is the only one of these actresses with Oscar potential, and her film is nominated for Foreign Language film. The only other nominee with a film that has more potential is de Armas, whose Knives Out managed 3 nominations, including Best Picture. I think Awkwafina is the bigger star, and the ultimate winner. Watch out for Feldstein, who is also a rising talent.

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win - Brad Pitt "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"
Could Win - Tom Hanks "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood", Pacino and Pesci "The Irishman"
Should Win - Pitt
Commentary - I think Pitt is waltzing to an acting Oscar win, and he should easily take this award. He is great in a film they love, he is a genuine movie star, and he has the momentum. The Irishman guys are legendary, but might cancel each other out, and Hanks, who is getting the Cecile D. DeMille Award, could have some voters on his side.

Best Supporting Actress
Will Win - Jennifer Lopez "Hustlers"
Could Win - Laura Dern "Marriage Story"
Should Win - Lopez
Commentary - This one is tough. Dern might be out front for the Oscars, and she is adored by this Globes crowd. But Lopez has the comeback story, which they love, and is the international superstar. Also, of the two performances, I loved Lopez the best. A tight race that could go one of two ways. I think Lopez takes it.

Best Director
Will Win - Quentin Tarantino "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"
Could Win - Bong Joon Ho "Parasite" or Martin Scorsese "The Irishman"
Should Win - Almost everyone is predicting Scorsese (a Globe favorite) or Joon Ho (this year's Cuaron). But I am going out on a ledge here for Tarantino. I think that as the guild awards start to roll in that Once Upon a Time In Hollywood could be the favorite this year. I think that Globe voters will sense that, and want to be the first major awards group to give Tarantino a win ahead of the DGA and the Oscars. Maybe this theory is crazy, but I am sticking with it until the envelope is opened.

For the rest, including television awards, here are my predictions:

Best Screenplay - Noah Baumbach "Marriage Story"
Best Animated Feature - Toy Story 4
Best Foreign Language Film - Parasite
Best Score - Thomas Newman "1917"
Best Song - Rocketman - I'm Gonna Love Me Again

Best Drama Series - The Morning Show
Best Comedy/Musical Series - Fleabag
Best Actor in a Drama Series - Billy Porter "Pose"
Best Actress in a Drama Series - Jennifer Aniston "The Morning Show"
Best Actor in a Comedy Series - Ben Platt "The Politician"
Best Actress in a Comedy Series - Phoebe Waller-Bridge "Fleabag"
Best TV Movie/Miniseries - Chernobyl
Best Actor in a TV Movie/Miniseries - Jared Harris "Chernobyl"
Best Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries - Michelle Williams "Fosse/Verdon"
Best Supporting Actor - Andrew Scott "Fleabag"
Best Supporting Actress - Helena Bonham Carter "The Crown"
