The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Picture

Post-Festival Predictions
Da 5 Bloods
The Father
Hillbilly Elegy
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
News of the World
Nomadland
One Night in Miami
Soul
The Trial of the Chicago 7

Other Contenders - On the Rocks, Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah, The United States v. Billie Holiday, Respect, The Personal History of David Copperfield, The Prom, Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, Palm Springs, Ammonite, Most Promising Woman, Supernova, I'm Your Woman, First Cow, Sound of Metal, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Driveways, Mulan, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Everybody's Talking About Jamie, The Assistant, The King of Staten Island, Death on the Nile

Commentary - You know, despite all of the craziness, this year is shaping up to be a decent one in terms of Oscar. We already have a some great films, and there are some really buzzed titles that will make for a great race. Nomadland and One Night in Miami lit up the festival circuit, and have talented female directors at their helm. The Trial of the Chicago 7 recently landed to lots of buzz, and The Father has been doing well for a while now, including a few trips to the fall festivals as well. Da 5 Bloods has lost some steam, but I think that the anger and intensity of Spike Lee's film will end show up in the Oscar race. Then there are the unknowns I am taking a chance on. The last time an August Wilson film was adapted it went on to a Best Picture nod and an Oscar win. This one looks to be even bigger, flashier, and have Netflix behind it. News of the World has a True Grit vibe and Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass are leading the effort. Hillbilly Elegy could be fantastic, or be a mixed bag. But with Netflix and Ron Howard, I still have it in the running. Mank looks to be one of the biggest contenders this year, and if it is even half as good and creative as it looks, it could take the race by storm. Finally, Soul is yet another Pixar classic according to early reviews, and it has been way too long since an animated film got nominated for this category. In this weird year, and in this difficult year, something with charm and heart could warm voters. But there are plenty of great titles that could crash the party. Big films like Wonder Woman 1984, Mulan, Death on the Nile and Tenet could take the blockbuster slot. Comedies and musicals like Palm Springs, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, On the Rocks, Everybody's Talking about Jamie, The King of Staten Island, and The Prom could follow Soul's lead and charm voters looking for lighter fair. Biopics and period pieces like Respect, Ammonite, The Personal History of David Copperfield, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Judas and the Black Messiah have historically been Oscar bait. Finally, there are a lot of great indies hoping to breakthrough in a fragmented year including Minari, Most Promising Woman, I'm Your Woman, First Cow, Sound of Metal, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Driveways, and The Assistant.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Director

Post-Festival Predictions
David Fincher "Mank"
Regina King "One Night in Miami"
Aaron Sorkin "The Trial of the Chicago 7"
George C. Wolfe "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"

Other Contenders - Paul Greengrass "News of the World", Spike Lee "Da 5 Bloods", Ron Howard "Hillbilly Elegy", Shaka King "Judas an the Black Messiah", Florian Zeller "The Father", Lee Isaac Chung "Minari", Sofia Coppola "On the Rocks", Francis Lee "Ammonite", Lee Daniels "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Christopher Nolan "Tenet", Armando Iannucci "The Personal History of David Copperfield", Pete Docter and Kemp Powers "Soul", Ryan Murphy "The Prom", Patty Jenkins "Wonder Woman 1984"

Commentary - After all the uproar over last year's exclusion of female directors, this year has a plethora of options for Oscar voters to correct their mistake. First and foremost is Chloe Zhao, whose Nomadland is set to be one of the biggest contenders, with Zhao's direction one of the movie's highlights. I also think Regina King can get in as well. One Night in Miami is apparently a powerful film, and her popularity (including a recent Oscar) is unmatched. Aaron Sorkin has won an Oscar for screenplay, and this year, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is getting enough buzz that he could be nominated for director. Mank looks to be the most creative and visually stunning film of the year, so David Fincher might finally get his well overdue Oscar. Finally, the stunning first looks at Ma Rainey's Black Bottom make me think that theater legend George C. Wolfe might be a huge contender for his visual vision. But Paul Greengrass, Ron Howard, and Spike Lee are right there lurking. All three are previous nominees/winners in big projects. I also would watch out for previous Oscar nominees/winners like Sofia Coppola, Lee Daniels, Pete Docter, Christopher Nolan, and Armando Iannucci. Also first timers like Shaka King, Florian Zeller, Lee Isaac Chun, Ryan Murphy, Francis Lee, and Patty Jenkins are hoping to breakthrough.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Actor

Post-Festival Predictions
Riz Ahmed "Sound of Metal"
Kingsley Ben-Adir "One Night In Miami"
Anthony Hopkins "The Father"
Delroy Lindo "Da 5 Bloods"
Gary Oldman "Mank"

Other Contenders - Tom Hanks "News of the World", Daniel Kaluuya "Judas and the Black Messiah", Trevante Rhodes "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Steven Yeun "Minari", Tom Holland "Cherry", Gabriel Basso "Hillbilly Elegy", Dev Patel "The Personal History of David Copperfield", Jesse Plemmons "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Mark Wahlberg "Good Joe Bell", Ben Affleck "The Way Back", John David Washington "Tenet", Liam Neeson "Ordinary Love", George Clooney "The Midnight Sky", Denzel Washington "The Little Things", Pete Davidson "The King of Staten Island", Eddie Murphy "Coming 2 America", Louis Gossett Jr "The Cuban"

Commentary - Two contenders have emerged as known quantities that will be hard for Oscar voters to emerge. Anthony Hopkins and Delroy Lindo have already cemented their status in this race. A third contender, Gary Oldman, feels like he will be a lock soon. In my last two slots, I am going with two younger, potentially first time nominees in Riz Ahmed (who is an Emmy winner) and Kingsley Ben-Adir, both with beloved breakthrough performances that are garnering a lot of buzz. But there are a lot of big names left in this category. There are plenty of previous Oscar nominees and winners like Tom Hanks, Daniel Kaluuya, Dev Patel, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck, Liam Neeson, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, and Louis Gossett Jr. There are also a lot of young and upcoming talents that are hoping to breakthrough such as Trevante Rhodes, Steve Yeun, Tom Holland, John David Washington, Gabriel Basso, Jesse Plemmons, and Pete Davidson.

Other Contenders - Andra Day "Billie Holiday vs. The United States", Michelle Pfeiffer "French Exit", Kate Winslet "Ammonite", Sophia Loren "The Life Ahead", Carey Mulligan "Promising Young Woman", Rashida Jones "On the Rocks", Halle Berry "Bruised", Elisabeth Moss "Shirley", Elisabeth Moss "The Invisible Man", Jessie Buckley "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Felicity Jones "The Midnight Sky", Yeri Han "Minari", Lesley Manville "Ordinary Love", Jo Ellen Pellman "The Prom", Beanie Feldstein "How to Build a Girl", Anya-Taylor Joy "Emma", Evan Rachel Wood "Kajillionaire", Yiefi Lu "Mulan", Julianne Moore "The Glorias", Sidney Flanigan "Never Rarely Always Sometimes", Julia Garner "The Assistant", Hong Chau "Driveways", Charlize Theron "The Old Guard", Gal Gadot "Wonder Woman 1984"

Commentary - We know one thing: Frances McDormand is getting another Oscar nomination, and honestly, I could easily see her winning a third Oscar for Nomadland. Beyond that there are a lot of unknown contenders and underdogs that are hoping to enter the race. The initial look for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom got people excited, and of course that means that Viola Davis is once again in this Oscar race. Maybe this is the year that she finally wins a lead Oscar? One can hope. Vanessa Kirby made a huge splash during the fall festivals with Pieces of a Woman. She is already an Emmy nominee and her profile is on the rise. Hillbilly Elegy may get pushed back, but I hope it comes out, and I hope it is as good as it looks. If that's the case, Amy Adams has got to be a part of the conversation. Finally, Jennifer Hudson playing Aretha Franklin feels like an Oscar comeback. But there are a lot of great contenders out there. Andra Day is playing Billie Holiday (not sure about her acting, but she is a hell of a singer), Michelle Pfeiffer is a scenery chewing role (apparently she is much better than the film), Kate Winslet (much more competition than Ronan in supporting) all are right on the edge of making it into the top five. There are plenty of previous winners and nominees like Sophia Loren, Carey Mulligan, Halle Berry, Felicity Jones, Lesley Manville, Julianne Moore, and Charlize Theron. There are some newcomers like Yeri Han, Jo Ellen Pellman, Yiefi Lu, and Sidney Flaningan. Finally, there are some known entities that have been flirting with Oscar recognition for some time, and this might be their year including Rashida Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Jessie Buckley, Beanie Feldstein, Anya-Taylor Joy, Evan Rachel Wood, Julia Garner, Hong Chau, and Gal Gadot.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

Post-Festival Predictions
Chadwick Boseman "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Sacha Baron Cohen "The Trial of the Chicago 7"
Charles Dance "Mank"
Leslie Odom Jr. "One Night in Miami"
David Strathairn "Nomadland"

Other Contenders - Lakeith Stanfield "Judas and the Black Messiah", Lucas Hedges "French Exit", Yahya Abdul-Mateen II "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Mark Rylance 'The Trial of the Chicago 7", Eddie Redmayne "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Frank Langella "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Jeremy Strong "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Michael Keaton "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Aldis Hodge "One Night in Miami", Billy Crystal "Standing Up, Falling Down", Bill Murray "On the Rocks", Steven Yeun "Minari", Will Patton "Minari", Marlon Wayans "Respect", Forest Whitaker "Respect", Kingsley Ben-Adair "One Night in Miami", Jonathan Majors "Da 5 Bloods", Clarke Peters "Da 5 Bloods", Chadwick Boseman "Da 5 Bloods", Tom Pelphrey "Mank", Jesse Plemmons "Judas and the Black Messiah", Shia Labeouf "Pieces of a Woman", Brian Dennehy "Driveways", Caleb Landry Jones "The Outpost", Bo Burnham "Promising Young Woman", Richard E. Grant "Everybody's Talking About Jamie", Richard Jenkins "Kajillionaire", James Corden "The Prom", Andrew Rannells "The Prom", Chris Pine "Wonder Woman 1984"

Commentary - How many guys from The Trial of the Chicago 7 are going to get nominated? History suggests two at most, but this cast is so loaded in a weak year, I could see more getting in to the race. Right now, I am only predicting the one that has been labeled as the standout, Sacha Baron Cohen, to get in, but there are so many names that I can't pick one to be the number two or the number three. For the other four slots, I am going with a variety of big names in big projects. Chadwick Boseman's death shocked Hollywood, and left a whole in the heart of moviegoers who saw a major talent leave us. He actually has two performances this year, but I am betting on his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom to get him a posthumous nod, and honestly, I would be shocked if he didn't win as well. One Night in Miami is getting a lot of praise and Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. is the most likely to reap the benefits of this film's buzz. Mank is going to be a huge contender, and Charles Dance is a legend. Finally, I am going with previous nominee David Strathairn for Nomandland. I think that films is the kind of film that voters are going to want to reward as much as possible. There are so many big names though. Beyond the plethora of Chicago 7 guys, there are legends and previous nominees like Billy Crystal, Bill Murray, Forest Whitaker, Brian Dennehy, Richard E. Grant, and Richard Jenkins. There are also Da 5 Bloods guys, Will Patton and Steven Yeun, the One Night in Miami Guys, Bo Burnham, Marlon Wayans, Tom Pelphrey, Caleb Landry Jones, The Prom guys, Chris Pine, and Shia Labeouf.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

Post-Festival Predictions
Mary J. Blige "Respect"
Glenn Close "Hillbilly Elegy"
Olivia Colman "The Father"
Saoirse Ronan "Ammonite"
Amanda Seyfried "Mank"

Other Contenders - Audra McDonald "Respect", Ellen Burstyn "Pieces of a Woman", Helena Zengel "News of the World", Meryl Streep "The Prom", Nicole Kidman "The Prom", Kerry Washington "The Prom", Charlene Swankie "Nomadland", Youn Yun-jung "Minari", Priyanka Chopra "The White Tiger", Dominique Fishback "Judas and the Black Messiah", Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Alicia Vikander "The Glorias", Gong Li "Mulan", Linda May "Nomadland", Fiona Shaw "Ammonite", Natasha Lyonne "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Vanessa Kirby "The World to Come", Olivia Williams "The Father", Debra Winger "Kajillionaire", Toni Collette "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Lily Collins "Mank", Caitlin FitzGerald "The Trial of the Chicago 7"

Commentary - Is this a rematch of Olivia Colman vs. Glenn Close? It is shaping up to be that way. We already know Colman is fantastic in The Father, and the stars are all aligned for Hillbilly Elegy. But there are plenty of other contenders that could crash the party. Ammonite got decent reviews, but rave ones for its stars. Saoirse Ronan is a perennial nominee, and apparently is great in the film. Mary J. Blige could get a second nod for Respect, although I would watch out for co-star Audra McDonald. Of the two, sight unseen, I am going with the previous Oscar nominee. Mank looks jaw-dropping, and besides Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried seems to have a large role. She has been great for years, and an Oscar nomination feels like it is in the cards. Beyond those five, plus McDonald, I would look out for the dynamic trio of Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Kerry Washington for The Prom, although I think it is going to end up being not great. Some other big names and upstarts with name recognition like Ellen Burstyn, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Fiona Shaw, Alicia Vikander, Gong Li, Natasha Lyonne, Vanessa Kirby, Dominique Fishback, Priyanka Chopra, Toni Collette, Debra Winger, Lily Collins, Olivia Williams, and Caitlin FitzGerald all have big roles. Finally, newcomers like Helena Zengel, Young Yun-jung, Charlene Swankie could have big breakthrough performances.

The Oscar Narrative: Post-Festival Predictions - Best Original Screenplay

Post-Festival Predictions
Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Kevin Willmott and Spike Lee "Da 5 Bloods"
Jack Fincher "Mank"
Lee Isaac Chung "Minari"
Pete Docter, Mike Jones, and Kemp Power "Soul"
Aaron Sorkin "The Trial of the Chicago 7"

Other Contenders - Sofia Coppola "On the Rocks", Francis Lee "Ammonite", Eliza Hittman "Never Rarely Sometimes Always", Will Berson, Chaka King, Keith and Kenneth Lucas "Judas and the Black Messiah", Emerald Fennell "Promising Young Woman", Kitty Green "The Assistant", Tracey Scott Wilson and Callie Khouri "Respect", Channing Godfrey Peeples "Miss Juneteenth", Christopher Nolan "Tenet", Leigh Whannell "The Invisible Man", Darius and Abraham Marder and Derek Cianfrance "Sound of Metal", Andy Siara "Palm Springs", Dan Scanlon, Keith Bunin, and Jason Headley "Onward", Judd Apatow, Pete Davidson, and Dave Sirus "The King of Staten Island", Miranda July "Kajillionaire", Kata Weber "Pieces of a Woman"

Commentary - A race devoid of usual Oscar contenders means that some up and coming indies might be able to breakthrough. I would bet that the Oscar comes down to Mank and The Trial of Chicago 7, both of which have Oscar written all over them. Beyond that though, it could go a bunch of different ways. I am still sticking with a lot of Oscar potential for Da 5 Bloods. With Boseman's passing, and the anger of 2020, I think Spike Lee's latest joint could resonate with voters. Soul, Pixar's latest, is probably going to Disney+ if it can't go to theaters. But it looks like it could be the next big Pixar classic (Onward is also in this race, but it got a mixed response). Also it might end up being a double nod for Kemp Power (who is a huge contender in Adapted for One Night in Miami). Finally, I am going with a Sundance favorite Minari, which, if it can get released, is a story that could really do well this season. But there are some other contenders that could easily slip in. Sofia Coppola could return for On the Rocks, and Francis Lee could do well with Ammonite. Both got decent reviews, but neither were the slam dunks that their buzz suggested. Judas and the Black Messiah, like Da 5 Bloods, could resonate with voters due to its timely subject matter. Respect could the next great music biopic, The Invisible Man is this year's potential horror breakthrough, and comedies Palm Springs and The King of Staten Island could see some love. Tenet was a disappointment, but you never know. Finally, look out for all of those indies that are hoping to take advantage of a weird year including: Promising Young Woman, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Assistant, Miss Juneteenth, Sound of Metal, Pieces of a Woman, and Kajillionaire.
