2017 Emmy Predictions: Directing and Writing in a Variety Series

Best Directing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Don Roy King "Saturday Night Live - Host: Jimmy Fallon"
Could Win - Paul Pennolino "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver - Multi-Level Marketing"
Should Win - Don Roy King "Saturday Night Live - Host: Jimmy Fallon"
Commentary - Last Week Tonight could sweep just because it is the favorite, but I think that Saturday Night Live, which wins this category even in its worst years, will take this one as Don Roy King adds to his Emmy haul with a seventh win. Plus, he actually does deserve it. It is not an easy job manipulating all the sets, characters, musical acts, and keeping it entertaining and moving at a great pace. Plus, this has been a banner year for the show and I think voters across the board are going to look for places to reward it.

Best Writing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Could Win - Late Night with Stephen Colbert or Full Frontal with Samantha Be
Should Win - Last Week Tonight will probably win the top category because they repeat often. Although this year, with Samantha Bee and Stephen Colbert in top form the competition is a lot tougher. That also means that Bee, who deserves to win this category, and Colbert, who even beat out the Daily Show here during its historic sweep, are contenders here and could take down the front runner.
