22nd Annual Critics Choice Award Nominations

For the most part, these nominations feels about right. The exclusions of Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant were surprising, but then I saw them in those comedy acting categories, and I feel they found a way to cop out of giving them the top nominations. Hacksaw Ridge proved it was a major contender today, because I honestly thought it would do better with the industry than the critics, and they gave it a lot of love across the board. Hell or High Water confirmed it was a true contender as well. La La Land, Manchester By the Sea, Moonlight, and Fences confirmed they are the front runners (although the supporting players of Fences missing was a bit of misstep for the film). Jackie, 20th Century Women, and Hidden Figures were clearly seen (as evidenced by their few nods), but none broke through. The genre acting categories this year feel light to say the list, and that Actress in an Action Movie category is an embarassment. Finally, it is unclear if these voters saw Silence. There's a good chance they didn't. But if they did, and it got zero love, that could be an interesting omen for a film a lot of folks are banking Oscar nods on it.
