2016 MTV Movie Award Predictions: True Story, Ensemble, and Villain

Best Villain
Will Win - Adam Driver "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Could Win - Ed Skrein "Deadpool"
Should Win - Hugh Keays-Byrne "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Commentary - Deadpool concerns me throughout these categories, because as voting is going on, it is racking up box office dollars. Star Wars is still Star Wars, and its fan base is undeniable, which is why I think Driver wins. But if Skrein pulled off an upset I would not be shocked. I also would not discount James Spader. Avengers is popular with this crowd. On a personal note, I hope Mad Max pulls the same feat it did at the Oscars, starting with Hugh Keays-Byrne.

Best True Story
Will Win - Straight Outta Compton
Could Win - The Revenant
Should Win - Steve Jobs or The Big Short
Commentary - The Revenant was an Oscar favorite, but I think that Straight Outta Compton is a slam-dunk here. It is big, bold, brash, and despite its 90's nostalgia, I think reached a far wider and younger audience than The Revenant. For the record, a Steve Jobs or Big Short upset would make this blogger very happy.

Best Ensemble Cast
Will Win - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Could Win - Pitch Perfect 2 or Furious 7
Should Win - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Commentary - I can never get these things right, and the large Pitch Perfect 2 cast or the sentimentality of Furious 7 could win. Or Star Wars could sweep. I'll bet on the latter.

2016 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Documentary Film

Will Win - Amy

Could Win - He Named Me Malala or The Hunting Ground

Should Win - Amy

Commentary - It's nice to see the MTV Movie Awards growing up a bit. No more Scared as Shit performance or Shirtless Performance, and in there place is Best Documentary Film. Then you look at the nominees, and you see six worthy nominees. This category probably won't last long, because it is not as exciting or ridiculous as other more attention grabbing categories, but I hope it does last. Amy is the Oscar winner, and probably the most popular of the bunch. But don't discount this new MTV Generation going their own way. He Named Me Malala could do well among the younger set of voters, and The Hunting Ground might strike a chord with the college folks. I still think Amy continues its dominance, but this is not the Oscars, so predictors beware.

A Hologram for the King Trailer

Tom Hanks is going to have a big year, with this, and later Clint Eastwood's Sully. From Tom Tykwer, A Hologram for the King is a big question mark. From the guy behind Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas, this feels a bit out of place in his filmography. I can't tell if it is going to be a well-acted, Oscar-esque romance, or a sappy feel-good film that doesn't resonate. Check out the trailer below:

Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some Trailer

Richard Linklater and Jeff Nichols Hit SXSW with 2017 Oscar Potentials

Two new films with awards potential appeared at SXSW this week. First is Richard Linklater in his first post-Boyhood project, Everybody Wants Some. Linklater returns to his comedy roots here, with a film that is being hailed as a perfect partner with his 90's classic Dazed and Confused. So far the reviews have been great, and the film looks like a perfect blend of comedy and humanity. I know that we shouldn't look at everything through an Oscar lens, but after Boyhood's Oscar success, Linklater's work will now be inevitably always now be apart of that conversation. Let's first say that Linklater's comedies never struck a chord with Oscar voters, compared to his Oscar nominations for the Before series and Boyhood. But now that he is fully on the radar, I wonder if now the Academy will look at his comedies in a different light. As we know, comedies don't play well with Oscar voters, but they do sometimes nominate them for major categories. Being an early release doesn't help either, but if Everybody Wants Some is as good as it looks, here's to hoping it has a great 2016.

The other major release probably has no shot at Oscar potential, but will at least spark the interest of true film lovers. Jeff Nichols is on a role with Take Shelter and Mud, two brilliant indies that deserved more attention they they unfortunately got. This time he turns his view to science fiction, in a film that has premiered to great reviews. Nichols looks to return to his Take Shelter roots, of a tightly wound thriller that keeps you guessing to the end. Indie Spirit voters will once again eat this up, and after the success of Ex Machina, I'm hoping that a smart, indie sci-fi thriller can once again grab some attention.

Both of these films will open soon, and we will find out their fate soon enough. But as the 2015 Oscar season fades from memory, the 2016 Oscar race is upon us. Even if these films don't make a mark, at least a new conversation, a new narrative has started to tell its story.
