The Oscar Narrative: Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Actress

Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions
Cynthia Erivo "Wicked"
Karla Sofía Gascón "Emilia Perez"
Marianne Jean-Baptiste "Hard Truths"
Angelina Jolie "Maria"
Mikey Madison "Anora"

Other Contenders - Demi Moore "The Substance", Nicole Kidman "Babygirl", Fernanda Torres "I'm Still Here", Pamela Anderson "The Last Showgirl", Tilda Swinton "The Room Next Door", Zendaya "Challengers", Amy Adams "Nightbitch", Saoirse Ronan "The Outrun", Ryan Destiny "The Fire Inside", Kate Winslet "Lee", Regina King "Shirley"

Commentary - A tough race that is sure to disappoint many come the final five. So far, previous nominee Cynthia Erivo has hit the high notes for Wicked, which is coming in hot on the Oscar race. Previous winner Angelina Jolie is eyeing a return to the category with her portrayal in Maria, and has hit all the right marks. Mikey Madison has made a name for herself with Better Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and other projects, but is hoping to really breakthrough with her first nod for Anora, and by all measures she is the frontrunner. Karla Sofia Gascon is doing well as Emilia Perez continues to do incredibly well. Her historic nomination looks like it is going to happen. In the final slot, a lot of folks are banking on Demi Moore. It would be great to see a truly awesome veteran actress get a well-deserved nomination. But I am still not sold on The Substance breaking through with Academy voters. SAG and BAFTA will help us determine how voters are gauging this surprise awards contender. I am going instead with Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Mike Leigh is a favorite amongst these voters, she is a previous nominee, and recently, these type of performances have done well with voters. Beyond those six, Nicole Kidman can never be counted out, Fernanda Torres could breakthrough, and never discount Pamela Anderson's magnificent performance in The Last Showgirl. Previous nominees/winners like Tilda Swinton, Amy Adams, Saoirse Ronana, Kate Winslet, and Regina King are battling with potential first timers Zendaya and Ryan Destiny.

The Oscar Narrative: Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions
Yura Borisov "Anora"
Kieran Culkin "A Real Pain"
Edward Norton "A Complete Unknown"
Guy Pearce "The Brutalist"
Denzel Washington "Gladiator II"

Other Contenders - Clarence Maclin "Sing Sing", Jeremy Strong "The Apprentice", Stanley Tucci "Conclave", Adam Pearson "A Different Man", Jonathan Bailey "Wicked", John Lithgow "Conclave", Peter Sarsgaard "September 5", Brian Tyree Henry "The Fire Inside", Mark Eydelshteyn "Anora", Drew Starkey "Queer", Brandon Wilson "Nickel Boys", Dennis Quaid "The Substance"

Commentary - I think this race is currently a seven-person race, with a few outliers hoping to break the seven. Five of the six hit both the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes: Borisov, Culkin, Norton, Pearce, and Washington. That is why they are my current top five. SAG and BAFTA will surely complicate those five, but for now at least there is continuity. Maclin got in at Critics Choice, and I personally hope he makes the top five. Jeremy Strong got in at The Globes. Both are hoping to break the top five as the guilds reign in. Beyond those seven, Stanley Tucci or John Lithgow from Conclave could ride the film's popularity to the top five. Adam Pearson is a dark horse, Jonathan Bailey is popular, and Dennis Quaid could surprise. Previous nominees Brian Tyree Henry joins veteran Peters Sarsgaard, and potential first timers Drew Starkey, Brandon Wilson, and Mark Eydelshteyn.

The Oscar Narrative: Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

Pre-Guild Predictions
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor "Nickel Boys"
Ariana Grande "Wicked"
Felicity Jones "The Brutalist"
Isabella Rossellini "Conclave"
Zoe Saldana "Emilia Perez"

Other Contenders - Margaret Qualley "The Substance", Danielle Deadwyler "The Piano Lesson", Selena Gomez "Emilia Perez", Monica Barbaro "A Complete Unknown", Elle Fanning "A Complete Unknown", Carol Kane "Between the Temples", Leonie Benesch "September 5", Joan Chen "Didi", Carrie Coon "His Three Daughters", Natasha Lyonne "His Three Daughters", Elizabeth Olsen "His Three Daughters", Toni Collette "Juror #2", Saoirse Ronan "Blitz"

Commentary - A race in flux, with upwards of at least nine really solid contenders that feel interchangeable. Zoe Saldana and Ariana Grande seem like the top two contenders, sharing a lot of the early critics awards, and both getting Globe and Critics Choice nominations. Right behind them is Isabella Rossellini, who is riding the Conclave love and his hitting all the right marks. Beyond those three is where the flexibility really kicks in. Felicity Jones got a Globe nod, but missed out on the Critics Choice. That film has a lot of force behind it, and she is a previous nominee. I think she makes it in. The final slot is tricky. Both the Globes and the Critics Choice went with Margaret Qualley, who is doing incredibly well on the circuit so far. I know the Academy has diversified in membership in recent years, but I am still a bit hesitant about the chances of The Substance. Body horror dark comedy doesn't scream "Academy". Let's see how SAG and BAFTA land, and how it does at some of the other major guilds. If it continues its momentum, she could easily jump into the top five. Selena Gomez landed at the Globes, but missed at the Critics Choice. If the film is as strong as it looks, she could join her co-star Saldana. A lot of buzz for Danielle Deadwyler has seemed to have faded. She got in at the Critics Choice, but snubbed at the Globes. Plus, overall the film is pretty much dead in any other categories. On the opposite front, Aujanue Ellis-Taylor, who is a previous nominee, got in at the Critics Choice, and Nickel Boys seems like it is really rising in the buzz. If they love the film, and we know they love her (I'm convinced she was a solid second place the first time around for King Richard), she is a real sleeper in this category. Also look out for Kane, Barbaro and Fanning, Chen, Benesch, Coon, Lyonne, Olsen, Ronan, and Collette.
