2018 Nomination Predictions
Cherry Jones "The Handmaid's Tale"
Margo Martindale "The Good Fight"
Diana Rigg "Game of Thrones"
Marisa Tomei "The Handmaid's Tale"
Cicely Tyson "How to Get Away With Murder"
Samira Wiley "The Handmaid's Tale"
Other Contenders - Pam Grier "This is Us", Viola Davis "Scandal", Laverne Cox "Orange is the New Black", Jodi Balfour "The Crown", Carrie Preston "The Good Fight", Elizabeth Perkins "This is Us", Kate Burton "This is Us", Kerry Washington "How to Get Away With Murder", Alfre Woodward "Empire", Rinko Kikuchi "Westworld", Lena Waithe "This is Us", Jane Lynch "The Good Fight", Judith Light "The Good Fight", Andrea Martin "The Good Fight"
Commentary - There is a big question in this category, can The Handmaid's Tale get three nominees in? I think the answer is yes. Samira Wiley was nominated in Supporting Actress last year, Cherry Jones is a beloved veteran and Emmy winner, and while Marisa Tomei has never been nominated for an Emmy, she is an Oscar winning movie star, and Emmy voters eat that up. I think previous nominees Diana Rigg and Cicely Tyson are in as well, leaving one spot. I am putting Margo Martindale in for The Good Fight because she has become one of those actors that can easily get a nod. But I think Pam Grier, last year's nominee Laverne Cox, Jodi Balfor, and Carrie Preston, who has won for this character before, are all ready for the spoils. I would also not discount the HTWAWM and Scandal crossover helping Viola Davis and Kerry Washington. I would personally include Rinko Kikuchi for a stunning Westworld episdoe, and Jane Lynch, Lena Waithe, Alfre Woodard, Judith Light, and Andrea Martin are all popular veterans.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
2018 Nomination Predictions
Sterling K. Brown "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
Bobby Cannavale "Will & Grace"
Bryan Cranston "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
Donald Glover "Saturday Night Live"
Bill Hader "Saturday Night Live"
Lin-Manuel Miranda "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
Other Contenders - Leslie Jordan "Will & Grace, Bob Newhart "The Big Bang Theory", Katt Williams "Atlanta", Wallace Shawn "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", Jon Hamm "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Will Ferrell "Saturday Night Live", Alec Baldwin "Will & Grace", Johnny Galecki "Roseanne", John Mulaney "Saturday Night Live", Nick Offerman "Will & Grace", Nathan Lane "Modern Family", Ben Platt "Will & Grace", Mark Hamill "The Big Bang Theory", Kevin Hart "Saturday Night Live", Chadwick Boseman "Saturday Night Live"
Commentary - I think five slots seem safe. Donald Glover and Bill Hader are definitely in for SNL, and will battle it out for the win. Bryan Cranston and Lin-Manuel Miranda also seem like safe bets for Curb Your Enthusiasm. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is not ever been really an Emmy favorite, but Sterling K. Brown is, and his episode on the show is just plain awesome. In the final slot, I want to give one to one of the Will & Grace guys. While Ben Platt, Alec Baldwin, and Nick Offerman could easily make the cut, I think this is between previous winners Bobby Cannavale and Leslie Jordan. Of the two, Cannavale is the bigger name, so I am betting on him in a close finish. Katt Williams got deep on Atlanta, Jon Hamm is always a threat, and the SNL guys, Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart and Chadwick Boseman are real possibilities.

2018 Nomination Predictions
Blythe Danner "Will & Grace"
Tina Fey "Saturday Night Live"
Tiffany Haddish "Saturday Night Live"
Lisa Kudrow "Grace and Frankie"
Jane Lynch "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Wanda Sykes "black-ish"
Other Contenders - Molly Shannon "Will & Grace", Lauren Graham "Curb Your Enthusiasm", Laurie Metcalf "The Big Bang Theory", Christine Baranski "The Big Bang Theory", Lena Waithe "Dear White People", Estelle Parsons "Roseanne", Minnie Driver "Will & Grace", Elizabeth Banks "Curb Your Enthusiasm", Saoirse Ronan "Saturday Night Live", Tracee Ellis Ross "grown-ish", Jane Lynch "Will & Grace", Jane Krakowski "Modern Family", Busy Phillips "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Kristin Chenoweth "Mom", Vanessa Bayer "Will & Grace"
Commentary - So this race, as always, is so packed that a surprise can come from anywhere. Tina Fey and Tiffany Haddish seem like locks, and will probably battle it out for the win for their excellent SNL episodes. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is going to have a banner year, and multiple Emmy winner Jane Lynch should easily get in for her awesome episode. Will & Grace has always done well in this category, and could bring back several nominees in both Guest Actor and Guest Actress. I really want to predict Molly Shannon, but she has only ever managed two nominations, and neither were for her previous turns on the show. So I am only including Blythe Danner, who has been nominated before and is a beloved Emmy favorite. Wanda Sykes managed to get in last year, and made headlines for her public denunciation of Roseanne as one of the show's producers. I think she gets in. The last slot I am reserving for Lisa Kudrow. It seems like every time her name is on a ballot she manages an Emmy nomination. I think she continues her streak. Lauren Graham could finally get in, but always seems to miss the mar, Laurie Metcalf and Christine Baranski are previous nominees and always threats, and I would not discount Lena Waithe, Estelle Parsons, Minnie Driver, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Krakowski, and Saoirse Ronan.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Limited Series and Made for Television Movie
Best Limited Series
American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Godless
Howard's End
The Looming Tower
Twin Peaks
Other Contenders - Top of the Lake: China Girl, American Vandal, Patrick Melrose, Genius: Picasso, The Sinner, The Alienst, Alias Grace, American Horror Story: Cult, Little Women, The Terror, Collateral, Seven Seconds, The Long Road Home, The Girlfriend Expierence
Commentary - This race may not have as many big time contenders as recent years, but it is still could make for an interesting race to five. American Crime Story looks to once again dominate, and it benefits from a weaker year. Godless and Twin Peaks both made enough of a splash, as did The Looming Tower. The newest contender, Howard's End, will it in well with the British and British-loving crowd. But that leaves out Top of the Lake. It's second outing was far less popular and well-received, but it should not be ignored. Patrick Melrose has great reviews, and could easily get in, a could Alias Grace, The Sinner, The Alienst, and the latest season of Genius. The one to watch for is American Vandal. It is not the most traditional nominee, but Netflix is behind it, and it was well-received. Knowing these voters, I am not predicting it, but I hope I am wrong.
Best Made for Television Movie
Black Mirror: U.S.S. Callister
Flint
Paterno
Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams: The Commuter
The Tale
Other Contenders - The Child in Time, Fahrenheit 451, Notes from the Field, George Gently and the New Age, I Am Elizabeth Smart, Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams: Kill All Others
Commentary - Last year, Black Mirror won, and they are back again with the same successful strategy. The biggest competition for it this year is The Tale, which is really a great film and you should never discount HBO. Paterno and Flint are not the best films, but they are solid enough and have big enough names attached. The final slot will probably go to The Commuter episode of Electric Dreams, a solid Amazon miniseries, with a lot of publicity behind it. Beyond those five there are two quality productions, Notes from the Field and The Child in Time, who would greatly improve the overall quality of this category, but neither were probably big enough to grab the attention of Emmy voters. Despite poor reviews, HBO and star power could bring Fahrenheit 451 into the fold. After than, the only one I think could get in is George Gently and the New Age, but once again, have enough folks seen it?

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
2018 Nomination Predictions
Antonio Banderas "Genius: Picasso"
Darren Criss "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Benedict Cumberbatch "Patrick Melrose"
Jeff Daniels "The Looming Tower"
Kyle MacLachlan "Twin Peaks"
Al Pacino "Paterno"
Other Contenders - Michael B. Jordan "Fahrenheit 451", Jesse Plemmons "Black Mirror: U.S.S. Callister", Evan Peters "American Horror Story: Cult", Daniel Bruhl "The Alienst", Michael Shannon "Waco", John Legend "Jesus Christ Superstar", Jimmy Tatro "American Vandal", Kevin Kline "Present Laughter", Matthew McFayden "Howard's End", Jack O'Connell "The Looming Tower"
Commentary - I think there are eight potentials for six slots in a pretty competitive race. Darren Criss, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Al Pacino seem like locks based on the projects, name recognition, and performances. I also think Kyle MacLachlan will make it in for the Twin Peaks reboot. The last two slots seem tricky. Jeff Daniels should be a shoo-in for The Looming Tower, but with his supporting performance as well, voters may rally behind that performance and go for someone else here. The new season of Genius focusing on Picasso has had mixed reviews, but Antonio Banderas has been well-received, and it is the type of performance that brings awards attention. But there are two others that could inspire votes. After his Emmy nomination for Fargo, Jesse Plemmons could score another nod for Black Mirror which could rise in nominations after its big win last year. And while Fahrenheit 451 was not well-received, Michael B. Jordan is so popular and is having such a banner year with Black Panther and Creed 2, I could see voters rewarding his star power. Beyond those eight, watch out for Evan Peters, Daniel Bruhl, Michael Shannon, John Legend, Matthew McFayden, and the truly deserving Jimmy Tatro and Kevin Kline.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions - Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
2018 Nomination Predictions
Hayley Atwell "Howard's End"
Jessica Biel "The Sinner"
Laura Dern "The Tale"
Michelle Dockery "Godless"
Elisabeth Moss "Top of the Lake: China Girl"
Sarah Paulson "American Horror Story: Cult"
Other Contenders - Edie Falco "The Menendez Murders", Cristin Milioti "Black Mirror: U.S.S. Callister", Regina King "Seven Seconds", Anna Deveare Smith "Notes from the Field", Riley Keogh "Paterno", Catherine Zeta-Jones "Cocaine Godmother", Carey Mulligan "Collateral", Kelly MacDonald "The Child in Time", Alana Boden "I Am Elizabeth Smart"
Commentary - The consensus has coalesced around six contenders. Laura Dern is most likely going to win another Emmy for The Tale. Jessica Biel and Hayley Atwell, both of whom have been on television for awhile now, will most likely earn their first, well-deserved, Emmy nominations. Michelle Dockery had a great role in Godless, and proved her popularity during her Downton Abbey days. I expect her to return to the Emmy race. Top of the Lake: China Girl may not do as well with Emmy voters as its predecessor, but Elisabeth Moss is television's hottest ticket. Expect a double nomination year for her. Finally, despite the fact that American Horror Story has continually dipped in quality, and in Emmy recognition, I expect the ever-popular Emmy-winning Sarah Paulson to once again return to this race. But Paulson is the most likely to be replaced, as AHS continues to see its nomination talley drop. Previous winners Edie Falco and Regina King could return, although neither of their projects were well-received by critics. Cristin Milioti could get in if Black Mirror grows its Emmy talley after last year's TV Movie win. Anna Deveare Smith should be in this race, Riley Keogh's star is on the rise, and Carey Mulligan and Kelly MacDonald could represent the Brits.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions
Jeff Daniels "Godless"
Cody Fern "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Edgar Ramirez "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Peter Saarsgard "The Looming Tower"
Michael Shannon "Fahrenheit 451"
Michael Stuhlbarg "The Looming Tower"
Other Contenders - Bill Camp "The Looming Tower", Ricky Martin ""American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace", Brandon Victor Dixon "Jesus Christ Superstar", Jason Ritter "The Tale", Tahar Rahim "The Looming Tower", Bill Pullman "The Sinner", Michael Kelly "The Long Road Home", Robert Forster "Twin Peaks", Beau Bridges "Mosaic", Dylan Baker "Little Women"
Commentary - I feel pretty safe in my Jeff Daniels and Edgar Ramirez predictions. I also think that despite bad reviews, Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon will make it in for Fahrenheit 451, as he was pretty fantastic in an otherwise so-so film. The Looming Tower is set to do well with Emmy nominations, and two veterans like Michael Stuhlbarg and Peter Saarsgard will appeal to Emmy voters. But that last slot is tricky. The Looming Tower's popularity could sweep in Bill Camp and Tahar Rahim, but they are the lesser known of the bunch. Brandon Victor Dixon earned raves for Jesus Christ Superstar, but these live musical productions have never managed acting nods before. Previous nominee Jason Ritter should be in the mix for The Tale, Bill Pullman could follow up his Critics Choice nomination, and popular Emmy favorites like Michael Kelly, Beau Bridges, and Dylan Baker should not be discounted.

2018 Nomination Predictions
Ellen Burstyn "The Tale"
Penelope Cruz "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Laura Dern "Twin Peaks"
Nicole Kidman "Top of the Lake: China Girl"
Angela Lansbury "Little Women"
Judith Light "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace"
Other Contenders - Merritt Wever "Godless", Julia Ormond "Howard's End", Jennifer Jason Leigh "Patrick Melrose", Elizabeth Delbecki "The Tale", Sharon Stone "Mosaic", Anna Paquin "Alias Grace", Queen Latifah "Flint", Kathy Baker "Paterno", Letitia Wright "Black Mirror"
Commentary - This year's race is stacked with Oscar and Emmy winners and nominees, and it makes me concerned which six will make the cut, with so many popular names on the ballot. I think that the power of The Assassination of Gianni Versace in a relatively weak long-form year will carry over to Emmy favorite Judith Light, and the probable winner, Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz. Angela Lansbury may continue to be a bridesmaid, but I think yet another nomination is on its way, despite mixed reactions to Little Women. Top of the Lake: China Girl doesn't look to have the same Emmy impact as its predecessor, but Nicole Kidman just won an Emmy last year, and is sure to inspire a lot of votes. Laura Dern is another Emmy favorite, who I think will end up with two nominations, and at least one win for her work. Twin Peaks was an Emmy favorite back in the day, and I expect it to do well with its return season. The last slot is the one I am a bit cautious on. I think Merritt Wever, Julia Ormond, and Jennifer Jason Leigh all make interesting cases. But I think that the beloved Ellen Burstyn, who has literally been nominated for seconds on-screen, will continue her reign as Emmy queen.

Other Contenders - Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, Ellen's Game of Games, America's Got Talent, World of Dance, Hollywood Game Night, Survivor, So You Think You Can Dance
Commentary - Whoever the Emmy voters are in this category really do seem to lack imagination or the ability to change. Last year, Dancing with the Stars was rightfully replaced by RuPaul, a rare stroke of brilliance from an otherwise dull category. I have no reason to believe that they will switch anything up this year.

2018 Emmy Nominations Predictions - Best Reality Host
2018 Nomination Predictons
Alec Baldwin "Match Game"
W. Kamau Bell "United Shades of America"
Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness "Queer Eye"
RuPaul Charles "RuPaul's Drag Race"
Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn "Project Runway"
Jane Lynch "Hollywood Game Night"
Other Contenders - Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg "Martha and Snoop's Potluck Party", Ellen DeGeneres "Ellen's Game of Games", Anthony Anderson "To Tell the Truth", Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio "Top Chef", Carson Daly "The Voice", Tom Bergeron "Dancing with The Stars", Bobby Flay "Beat Bobby Flay", Guy Fieri "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives"
Commentary - RuPaul looks to extend his dominance in this category, but after a year of missing out, Jane Lynch returns, setting up an interesting battle. I think that Klum and Gunn as well as Bell and Baldwin will return. For the final slot though, I am predicting a new entry over last year's nominees Stewart and Dogg, and over favorites such as Ellen DeGeneres. The return of Queer Eye has been a cultural phenomenon, and I think that even the normally unimaginative Reality Emmy voters will recognize them with a nod. Also watch out for Carson Daly, previous winner Tom Bergeron, and the Top Chef duo.

2018 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Best Sketch and Talk Variety Series
Best Variety Series - Talk
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Late Late Show with James Corden
Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Real Time with Bill Maher
Other Contenders - Late Night with Seth Meyers, Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Conan
Commentary - Last Week Tonight is poised to win again, but Stephen Colbert could find his way into the winners circle. Samantha Bee will most likely overcome her snafu that recently caused controversy, and could also overtake the two front runners. James Corden will take the entertainment slot, and Jimmy Kimmel is actually a dark horse here, after making headlines all year, and hosting the Oscars. Finally, while it would be great to see Seth Meyers or Trevor Noah take the last slot, Real Time has consistently made it in here, with stiffer competition. Until it doesn't, I'm betting on it.
Best Variety Series - Sketch
At Home with Amy Sedaris
Drunk History
I Love You, America
Portlandia
Saturday Night Live
Tracey Ullman's Show
Other Contenders - The President Show, The Joel McHale Show, Kevin Hart Presents the Next Level, Tosh.0, Nathan For You
Commentary - This category started a few years ago with such promise but has since become kind of a crap shoot category. Unless voters want to reward Portlandia as it is ending its run, it will probably be Saturday Night Live's to lose for the foreseeable future. This year Billy on the Street and Documentary now are off the ballot, leaving at least two slots. I expect Tracey Ullman and Drunk History to return after making the cut last year. That leaves two slots. My bets are Sarah Silverman's I Love You, America. She is a huge Emmy favorite, and it is timely. Finally, I think Amy Sedaris finally earns an Emmy nomination after many years in the industry. But The President Show, Joel McHale, Nathan for You, and Kevin Hart could crash the party.
