Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Nominees

Wow, some interesting choices to say the least, and they have thrown this race a little tailspin. First, despite bad reviews and no critics love, the actors show some love to Glenn Close and Leonardo Dicaprio, apparently enough love to bring in their co-stars to the mix, Janet McTeer and Armie Hammer. Both were on the short list, but both actually getting in is pretty surprising. As is the nomination for Demian Bichir in A Better Life, a stunning nod over the likes of Michael Fassbender, Gary Oldman, and Michael Shannon. Also, probably the biggest snub of the day is Albert Brooks, after all that critics love, without the SAG, this could be a stunning defeat. Especially since in his place we get Hammer, and Jonah Hill, the young guns apparently can outfire the old ones. I think, especially without Sydow (actually no ELAIC or War Horse, which is worth mentioning), this paves the way for Plummer to get that Oscar. Here are some other things we have learned. The community has not forgotten Nick Nolte's performance. Melissa McCarthy, especially if she gets the Globe (Plus BFCA, plus SAG), is most likely going to get an Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids, which unexpectedly got a ensemble nod as well. The Help is definitely a hit with the actors, and could steal the top ensemble prize from The Artist. Tilda Swinton is here to stay as well, with her performance not only getting critical love, but now getting SAG love. No Charlize Theron, which could spell bad news for her and Patton Oswalt, both of whom were left off the list. Finally, while the critics are all over the place, if the Globes follow in suit with BFCA and SAG, it looks like The Help is Jessica Chastains best hope for an Oscar nod.
