Television Academy Announces Rule Changes for 2021 Emmy Awards

Here are the highlights from the rule changes announced this week:

1. The Variety series are going to be re-merged into a singular category, which makes sense since the Sketch craze of the last decade has waned in recent years.

2. Short From Drama/Comedy Series and Short Form Variety Series are now one category.

3. Limited Series now titled Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

4. New Stunt Category that recognizes individuals, not just the stunt coordination: Outstanding Stunt Performance by an Individual or Team in a Drama, Comedy, Limited Series or Movie

5. Clarification on theatrical releases to stop Emmy/Oscar crossover: "To clarify the distinction between theatrical motion pictures and television movies during the ongoing pandemic, any non-documentary film placed on the AMPAS viewing platform for Oscar consideration will be deemed a theatrical motion picture, and thus ineligible for the Emmy competition. Additionally, the previously announced rule will apply: Effective in 2021, any programs that have been nominated for an Oscar are no longer eligible to enter the Primetime Emmy Awards competition."

6. Finally, an agreement with NATAS (The Daytime Emmys group) means that all Children's Programs will now be at the Daytime Emmys, not at both ceremonies.
