2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Series, and Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress

Best Drama Series
Will Win - Shogun
Could Win - The Crown
Should Win - Shogun
Commentary - Moving to Drama Series was a brilliant move for Shogun, as it sets to dominate tomorrow night after dominating the Creative Arts awards last week. It is also the most deserving winner, in a weak year due to the strikes. The only other series to watch out for is The Crown. While it's last two seasons were a clear dip in quality, do not underestimate these voters and their love for this series.

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Hiroyuki Sanada "Shogun"
Could Win - Gary Oldman "Slow Horses"
Should Win - Hiroyuki Sanada "Shogun"
Commentary - Sanada is great in Shogun, and should benefit from the sweep mentality. But Slow Horses did well in nominations and Gary Oldman is a big name to pass up.

Best Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Anna Sawai "Shogun"
Could Win - Imelda Staunton "The Crown" or Jennifer Aniston "The Morning Show"
Should Win - Anna Sawai "Shogun"
Commentary - Will Staunton continue the reign of Claire Foy and Olivia Colman? Or will Sawai ride the Shogun glory. I think Sawai is the best of the bunch and will break the streak for The Crown.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Tadanobu Asano "Shogun"
Could Win - Billy Crudup "The Morning Show" or Jon Hamm "The Morning Show"
Should Win - Tadanobu Asano "Shogun"
Commentary - Asano will probably prevail in a tight race with Crudup, and maybe Hamm. I think the big names of The Morning Show will pull enough voters for Asano, who is great, to surprise.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Elizabeth Debicki "The Crown"
Could Win - Lesley Manville "The Crown", Christine Baranksi "The Gilded Age", or Greta Lee "The Morning Show"
Should Win - Elizabeth Debicki "The Crown"
Commentary - The one category Shogun can't win will probably give one final big Emmy moment for The Crown as Elizabeth Debicki, who is the best part of the last two season playing Princess Diana, is set to win an Emmy after doing well with other voting bodies. But this is an open race , so watch out for Manville, Baranski, or Lee to surprise.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Series, Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Best Comedy Series
Will Win - The Bear
Could Win - Hacks
Should Win - Hacks or Reservation Dogs
Commentary - I would love to see Reservation Dogs win on its way out, and Hacks had an amazing season. But The Bear's is on a roll, Season 2 was well-received, and it did the best at the Creative Arts Emmys. I think it wins again.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Jeremy Allen White "The Bear"
Could Win - Martin Short "Only Murders in the Building
Should Win - D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai "Reservation Dogs"
Commentary - The Woon-A-Tai nomination was a stroke a genius for Emmy voters, and Short is always good in Only Murders, but I would be crazy to pass on White for his second win.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Ayo Edebiri "The Bear"
Could Win - Jean Smart "Hacks"
Should Win - Either Edebiri or Smart
Commentary - Jean Smart is always a safe bet, and won for the first two season. She is going up against last year's Supporting winner Edebiri, who is great in the bear. Both are deserving, and it will be interesting to see The Bear's dominance up against Smart's popularity. I am going with The Bear.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Ebon Moss-Bachrach "The Bear"
Could Win - Paul W. Downs "Hacks"
Should Win - Downs
Commentary - He won last year, The Bear is still dominant. Done deal.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Liza Colon-Zayas "The Bear"
Could Win - Hannah Einbinder "Hacks" or Meryl Streep "Only Murders in the Building"
Should Win - Einbinder
Commentary - The Bear has so many fans, and with its only nomination Colon-Zayas in the mix, I think she surprises. Her best season is Season 3, but that was airing during voting. But she is up against some big competitors. Einbinder should win for this season and Meryl Streep is a legend. This is probably The Bear's weakest category, but I feel another sweep coming.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Directing and Writing in a Drama and Comedy Series

Best Directing in a Drama Series
Will Win - Shogun - Crimson Sky
Could Win - The Crown - Sleep, Dearie, Sleep
Should Win - Shogun - Crimson Sky
Commentary - Shogun is going to sweep. I like the show, but I'm getting tired of these lazy Emmy voters who pick one show and run with it. That being said, in terms of its direction, this is a worthy honor. Watch out for The Crown, which has often surprised at the Emmys.

Best Directing in a Comedy Series
Will Win - The Bear - Fishes
Could Win - Hacks - Bulletproof
Should Win - Either episode.
Commentary - I really wish Hacks would challenge here, but I think this is The Bear's to lose, and the Fishes episode really is a deserving winner.

Best Writing in a Drama Series
Will Win - Shogun - Crimson Sky
Could Win - Slow Horses - Negotiating with Tigers
Should Win - Mr. and Mrs. Smith - First Date
Commentary - I think the back of forth of First Date is great, and Slow Horses could win, if they are feeling like spreading the love. But if the Creative Arts are any indication, Shogun is in for a sweep.

Best Writing in a Comedy Series
Will Win - The Bear - The Fishes
Could Win - Hacks - Bulletproof
Should Win - Hacks - Bulletproof
Commentary - If I were a voter, I would split the difference, and give Hacks this well-deserved win in writing. But with the new sweep mentality of voters, it is safe to say The Bear wins here as well.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Limited Series, and Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/Movie

Best Limited Series
Will Win - Baby Reindeer
Could Win - True Detective: Night Country, Fargo, or Ripley
Should Win - Baby Reindeer or True Detective: Night Country
Commentary - Baby Reindeer will win this in a walk, but True Detective, Fargo, and Ripley are worthy winners if voters throw us a surprise.

Best Actor in a Limited Series/Movie
Will Win - Richard Gadd "Baby Reindeer"
Could Win - Andrew Scott "Ripley"
Should Win - Andrew Scott "Ripley"
Commentary -  I think Scott's work in Ripley is fantastic, but this is Gadd's to lose as Baby Reindeer is set to have a dominate night on Sunday. Plus, Gadd is great too, there really is not a bad winner among the bunch.

Best Actress in a Limited Series/Movie
Will Win - Jodie Foster "True Detective: Night Country"
Could Win - Brie Larson "Lessons in Chemistry" or Juno Temple "Fargo"
Should Win -Foster or Temple
Commentary - My two favorite of the bunch are Jodie Foster and Juno Temple, and I think that the power of Jodie Foster will win the day. But watch out for Brie Larson. She is great in Lessons in Chemistry, did well on the winter circuit, and could easily surprise.

Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Movie
Will Win - Tom Goodman-Hill "Baby Reindeer"
Could Win - Robert Downey Jr. "The Sympathizer" or Jonathan Bailey "Fellow Travelers"
Should Win - Jonathan Bailey "Fellow Travelers"
Commentary - Downey is fresh off of an Oscar win, but that series was non-existent in other categories. Bailey is the best of the bunch, and is a hot commodity right now. But I feel a sweep coming, and I think Goodman-Hill is going to surprise.

Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/Movie
Will Win - Jessica Gunning "Baby Reindeer"
Could Win - Kali Reis "True Detective: Night Country", Aja Naomi King "Lessons in Chemistry"
Should Win - Jessica Gunning "Baby Reindeer"
Commentary - Gunning is the star of Baby Reindeer, and while Supporting Actor might be a toss up, this one feels locked up. If voters decide to spice things up, Reis and King are the natural runners up.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Directing and Writing in a Limited Series or Movie

Best Directing in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win - Baby Reindeer
Could Win - True Detective: Night Country or Ripley
Should Win - True Detective: Night Country
Commentary - I hate that True Detective: Night Country did so poorly at the Creative Arts Emmys, because I really thought it deserved some recognition for this season's excellent technical and direction work. Ripley did do well in some key categories, and is the kind of stylish series that gets directors' attentions. However, it looks like, despite spreading the wealth in nominations, is going to have yet another year of sweeps.

Best Writing in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win - Baby Reindeer
Could Win - Fargo or Ripley
Should Win - Baby Reindeer
Commentary - So while I'm not looking forward to a sweep, I really did like Baby Reindeer, and I think its writing is really strong. If they decided to get creative, watch out for Ripley or Fargo.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actor and Guest Actress in a Drama and Comedy Series

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win - Nestor Carbonell "Shogun"
Could Win - Jonathan Pryce "Slow Horses" or John Turturro "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
Should Win - Nestor Carbonell "Shogun"
Commentary - I think that I will probably regret this pick, over big names like Pryce and Turturro. But I think the power of Shogun will propel Nestor Carbonell to a surprise win.

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win - Claire Foy "The Crown"
Could Win - One of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actresses.
Should Win - Michaela Coel "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
Commentary - All three of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actresses have a chance, but Claire Foy has already won this category for reappearing in The Crown, and with potential vote splitting, I am sticking with a known winner.

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Christopher Lloyd "Hacks"
Could Win - Jon Bernthal "The Bear" or Ryan Gosling "Saturday Night Live"
Should Win - Jon Bernthal "The Bear" or Ryan Gosling "Saturday Night Live"

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win - Jamie Lee Curtis "The Bear"
Could Win - Maya Rudolph "Saturday Night Live", Kaitlin Olson "Hacks"
Should Win - Jamie Lee Curtis "The Bear"

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Competition Series, Reality Host, Structured and Unstructured Reality Series

Best Competition Series
Will Win - RuPaul's Drag Race
Could Win - The Traitors
Should Win - The Traitors
Commentary - Can Drag Race continue its reign? History suggests in these categories it is best to stick with the previous winner until voters choose something new. I think if any series is ready to triumph it is The Traitors. I'm not betting on it, but I wont be surprised if it happens.

Best Reality Host
Will Win - RuPaul Charles "RuPaul's Drag Race"
Could Win - Alan Cumming "The Traitors"
Should Win - Alan Cumming "The Traitors"
Commentary - I love RuPaul, but at this point, it is crossing into Daily Show/Last Week Tonight territory of over-rewarded. I think Cumming is a sly potential upset, but until RuPaul loses, I will predict him.

Best Structured Reality Series
Will Win - Queer Eye
Could Win - Shark Tank
Should Win - Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives
Commentary - I love me some triple D, and I am so ready for a new winner. But again, these voters continue to repeat themselves until one year, they switch to something new. With mostly static nominees, I think they go with Queer Eye again.

Best Unstructured Reality Series
Will Win - Welcome to Wrexham
Could Win - Love on the Spectrum
Should Win - Welcome to Wrexham
Commentary - The last two winners of this category returned. I am sticking with Wrexham to win back to back years.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Variety Talk Series, Variety Scripted Series, Variety Special (Live), and Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)

Best Variety Talk Series
Will Win - The Daily Show
Could Win - Late Night with Stephen Colbert
Should Win - The Daily Show
Commentary - The return of Jon Stewart looks like it will help him once again beat out his old friend Stephen Colbert.

Best Variety Scripted Series
Will Win - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Could Win - Saturday Night Live
Should Win - The Emmy voters, but re-combining these categories and making them vote once.
Commentary - Until John Oliver loses, I will pick him

Best Variety Special (Live)
Will Win - The Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show Starring Usher
Could Win - The Oscars, The Greatest Roast Of All Time: Tom Brady
Should Win - The Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show Starring Usher
Commentary - A lot of folks are predicting The Oscars make a comeback, but it has been a long time since an awards show has won in this category. Without an Elton John-esque nominee, I am going back to the Super Bowl Halftime show. But watch out for the Tom Brady rest. It is the most unique of the bunch, and in a bunch of split votes, it could surprise.

Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)
Will Win - Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic
Could Win - Billy Joel: The 100th - Live At Madison Square Garden
Should Win - Dick Ban Dyke: 98 Years of Magic
Commentary - A fun race between two legends, I think Dick Van Dyke's nostalgic night of magic beats out Billy Joel.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Writing and Directing in a Variety Series and Variety Special

Best Directing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Liz Patrick "Saturday Night Live - Host: Ryan Gosling"
Could Win - David Paul Meyer "The Daily Show - Jon Stewart Returns To The Daily Show"
Should Win - Liz Patrick "Saturday Night Live - Host: Ryan Gosling"
Commentary - History suggests that SNL will win this one again, especially with the excellent Ryan Gosling episode. But the return of Jon Stewart could revive those Emmy voters that helped it dominate for a decade and a half at these awards.

Best Writing in a Variety Series
Will Win - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Could Win - The Daily Show
Should Win - The Daily Show
Commentary - I never thought I would want The Daily Show to win again (great show, but it won too many times), but at this point I will take a return to it to avoid the 18,000th win for Last Week Tonight in a row. That being said, until the streak is broken, I am sticking with John Oliver.

Best Directing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Hamish Hamilton "The Oscars"
Could Win - Russell Norman "Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic" or Glenn Weiss "The 76th Annual Tony Awards"
Should Win - Russell Norman "Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic"
Commentary - I would love to see Norman win for a nostalgic night of magic, but I think that legends in this category, Hamish Hamilton and Glenn Weiss could continue their streaks. Of the two, I am leaning towards Hamilton.

Best Writing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Alex Edelman "Alex Edelman: Just for Us"
Could Win - The Oscars
Should Win - Alex Edelman "Alex Edelman: Just for Us"
Commentary - So the only nominee here that got a programming nod is The Oscars. Are writers really going to give it a writing Emmy? I think instead the buzz behind Alex Edelman's special will earn him the Emmy instead.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Picture

First 2025 Nomination Predictions

Other Contenders - The Piano Lesson, Queer, Sing Sing, All We Imagine As Light, Saturday Night, September 5, The End, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Challengers, Hit Man, Kinds of Kindness, Wicked, Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot, His Three Daughters,  Nosferatu, Here, Nightbitch, Juror #2, Maria, The Brutalist, Hard Truths, A Real Pain, Civil War, Bird, The Fire Inside, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Babygirl, Didi, The Bikeriders

Commentary - I will update these soon, as Telluride and Venice wrap up, but before all the dust settles, I am going with big names like Joker: Folie à Deux, Gladiator II and Dune Part II. Blitz is Steve McQueen, A Complete Unknown is James Mangold tackling Bob Dylan, Conclave is Edward Berger's return, and The Room Next Door is Pedro Almodovar. Finally, Anora did really well at Cannes and Nickel Boys has premiered to rave reviews. Fall festivals have revealed that The Piano Lesson, Saturday Night, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, The Brutalist, A Real Pain, and Babygirl are all names to remember. Big names like Inside Out 2, Furiosa, Wicked, Hit Man, Nosferatu, Here, Juror #2, and Challengers could get the populist vote. Indies like Sing Sing, Queer, All We Imagine is Light, The Wild Robot, His Three Daughters, Maria, Hard Truths, Civil War, Bird, A Fire Inside, Nightbitch, The Bikeriders, Kinds of Kindness, and September 5 could breakthrough as we enter the critics phase.
