The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Director

First 2025 Nomination Predictions
Sean Baker "Anora"
Steve McQueen "Blitz"
James Mangold "A Complete Unknown"
Edward Berger "Conclave"
Ridley Scott "Gladiator II"

Other Contenders - Denis Villeneuve "Dune", Todd Phillips "Joker: Folie à Deux", Jacques Audiard "Emilia Perez", Luca Guadagnino "Queer", John M. Chu "Wicked", RaMell Ross "Nickel Boys", Pedro Almodovar "The Room Next Door", Yorgos Lanthimos "Kinds of Kindness", Mohammad Rasoulof "The Seed of the Sacred Fig", Malcolm Washington "The Piano Lesson", George Miller "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga", Jason Reitman "Saturday Night", Luca Guadagnino "Challengers", Azazel Jacobs "His Three Daughters", Andrea Arnold "Bird", Marielle Heller "Nightbitch", William Goldenberg "Unstoppable", Joshua Oppenheimer "The End", Brady Corbet "The Brutalist", Mike Leigh "Hard Truths", Richard Linklater "Hit Man", Greg Kwedar "Sing Sing", Tim Fehlbaum "September 5", Payal Kapadia "All We Imagine As Light", Robert Zemeckis "Here", Rachel Morrsion "The Fire Inside", John Crowley "We Live in Time", Franics Ford Coppola "Megalopolis", Clint Eastwood "Juror #2"

Commentary - For my starting five, I am going with the legend Ridley Scott (returning with the sequel to a Best Picture winner), previous nominee Steve McQueen, James Mangold (Maybe finally with a Bob Dylan biopic), Edward Berger (Conclave is getting raves out of Venice), and Sean Baker, who has been flirting with Oscar success for years, and is hoping Anora is finally his ticket to to the big party. Beyond those five, we have a ton of veterans, previous nominees, etc. that are hoping to continue their success including Villeneuve, Phillips, Audiard, Guadagnino, Miller, Lanthimos, Almodovar, Reitman, Arnold, Heller, Leigh, Linklater, Zemeckis, Coppola, Eastwood, and Crowley. Add onto those newcomers, interesting international names, and underground favorites like Chu, Rasoulof, Ross, Washington, Goldenberg, Oppenheimer, Corbet, Kwedar, Jacobs, Fehlbaum, Kapadia, and Morrison and you have quite a race.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Actor

First 2025 Nomination Predictions
Timothee Chalamet "A Complete Unknown"
Colman Domingo "Sing Sing"
Ralph Fiennes "Conclave"
Paul Mescal "Gladiator II"
Joaquin Phoenix "Joker: Folie à Deux"

Other Contenders - John David Washington "The Piano Lesson", Andrew Garfield "We Live in Time", Gabriel LaBelle "SNL: 1975", Daniel Craig "Queer", Jharrel Jerome "Unstoppable", Ethan Herisse "Nickel Boys", Adrien Brody "The Brutalist", Sebastian Stan "A Different Man", Mike Faist "Challengers", Josh O'Connor "Challengers", Michael Shannon "The End", Cillian Murphy "Small Things Like These", Austin Butler "The Bikeriders", Jesse Plemmons "Kinds of Kindness", Nicholas Hoult "Juror #2", Jacob Elrodi "On Swift Horses", Tom Hanks "Here"

Commentary - A lot of big names and newcomers clash for five slots. I am banking on known entities like Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Paul Mescal in a sequel to a Best Picture winner, Joaquin Phoenix returning in the role that won him his Oscar, Ralph Fiennes in a buzzed role in Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front follow-up, and recent nominee Colman Domingo in a well-received role in Sing Sing. But this is a competitive race. John David Washington has been flirting with Oscar success for years, and The Piano Lesson. Gabriel LaBelle, after missing the cut for The Fabelmans has a really interesting role in the new SNL: 1975 film, and the first trailer looks riveting. Daniel Craig could also finally see some Oscar glory for Luca Guadagnino's Queer, which was finally picked up. Also look out for previous nominees and winners like Adrien Brody, Andrew Garfield, Austin Butler, Jesse Plemmons, Michael Shannon, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hanks. There are also a lot of young talent actors like Jharrel Jerome, Mike Faist, Josh O'Connor, and Jacob Elrodi hoping for the big breakthrough.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Actress

First 2025 Nomination Predictions
Amy Adams "Nightbitch"
Lady Gaga "Joker: Folie à Deux"
Angelina Jolie "Maria"
Mikey Madison "Anora"
Julianne Moore "The Room Next Door"

Other Contenders - Karla Sofía Gascón "Emilio Perez", Saoirse Ronan "The Outrun", Cynthia Erivo "Wicked", Ariana Grande "Wicked", Demi Moore "The Substance", Tilda Swinton "The End", June Squibb "Thelma", Nicole Kidman "Babygirl", Marianne Jean-Baptiste "Hard Truths", Lily Gladstone "Fancy Dance", Naomi Watts "The Friend", Salma Hayek "Without Blood", Pamela Anderson "The Last Showgirl", Kate Winslet "Lee", Jodie Comer "The Bikeriders", Kerry Washington "Six Triple Eight", Kirsten Dunst "Civil War", Regina King "Shirley", Zendaya "Challengers"

Commentary - A great race this year features veterans and newbies alike. For the top five, I am going with Amy Adams, directed by Marielle Heller, Lady Gaga in a role that could easily play on her strengths, Angelina Jolie with Pablo Larrain, Julianne Moore with Pedro Almodovar, and breakthrough star Mikey Madison. Beyond those talented five, there is a plethora of previous nominees and winners that are hoping to return to the game including Saoirse Ronan, Cynthia Erivo, Tilda Swinton, June Squibb, Nicole Kidman, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Lily Gladstone, Naomi Watts, Salma Hayek, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, and Regina King. Veterans like Demi Moore and Pamela Anderson are hoping to finally get some recognition for their work, and don't discount breakthroughs like Karla Sofia Gascon, Jodie Comer, and Zendaya.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

First 2025 Nomination Predictions
Kieran Culkin "A Real Pain"
Samuel L. Jackson "The Piano Lesson"
Clarence Maclin "Sing Sing"
Stanley Tucci "Conclave"
Denzel Washington "Gladiator II"

Other Contenders - Edward Norton "A Complete Unknown", John Lithgow "Conclave", Austin Butler "Dune Part II", Pedro Pascal "Gladiator II", Lamore Morris "SNL: 1975", Mark Eydelshteyn "Anora", Yura Borisov "Anora", Hugh Grant "Heretic", Brian Tyree Henry "The Fire Inside", Stephen Graham "Blitz", Adam Pearson "A Different Man", Drew Starkey "Queer", Harris Dickinson "Blitz", Fred Hechinger "Gladiator II", Tom Hardy "The Bikeriders", Jay O. Sanders "His Three Daughters", Richard Roundtree "Thelma", Ray Fisher "The Piano Lesson", Daveed Diggs "Nickel Boys", Jeremy Strong "The Apprentice", Brendan Gleeson "Joker: Folie à Deux", Willem Dafoe "Kinds of Kindness", Jonathan Bailey "Wicked", Matthew Macfadyen "Holland, Michigan", Paul Raci "Sing Sing", Nicholas Braun "SNL: 1975", Dylan O’Brien "SNL: 1975", J.K. Simmons "SNL: 1975"

Commentary - An interesting category this year, that has a lot of new/under-rewarded talent simmering at the surface. I am going to go with legends like Denzel Washington, Stanley Tucci, and Samuel L. Jackson in buzzed projects, because early on it is best to bank on known properties. I am hearing a ton of buzz for Clarence Maclin in Sing Sing, so he is in for now, but the buzz has to sustain itself for a long time. Finally, I am going with Emmy winner Kieran Culkin, in another buzzed performance that needs to have staying power to keep its spot. Beyond those five, be on the lookout for previous winners and nominees like Edward Norton, John Lithgow, Austin Butler, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Hardy, Brendan Gleeson, Willem Dafoe, Paul Raci, and J.K. Simmons. But the list of potential first-timers far outweighs the veterans list, and could make this race exciting. I could list all of those folks, but you can see the names above. This is a particularly fluid race that I am anticipating will be a fight to the finish.

The Oscar Narrative: First 2025 Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

First 2025 Nomination Predictions
Carrie Coon "His Three Daughters"
Danielle Deadwyler "The Piano Lesson"
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor "Nickel Boys"
Lelsey Manville "Queer"
Saoirse Ronan "Blitz"

Other Contenders - Zoe Saldana "Emilio Perez", Selena Gomez "Emilio Perez", Isabella Rossellini "The Concave", Julianne Moore "The Room Next Door", Mo'Nique "The Deliverance", Glenn Close "The Deliverance", Joan Chen "Didi", Toni Collette "Juror #2", Anne Hathaway "Mother Mary", Maria Bakalova "The Apprentice", Kathy Burke "Blitz", Elisabeth Olsen "His Three Daughters", Nina Hoss "Women in the Castle",  Kristin Scott Thomas "Women in the Castle", Daisey Ridley "Women in the Castle", Renate Reinsve "A Different Man", Catherine O'Hara "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice", Dolly De Leon "Between the Temples", Connie Nielson "Gladiator II", Moses Ingram "The End", Vanessa Kirby "Eden", Margaret Qualley "The Substance", Rachel Sennott "SNL: 1975", Adriana Paz "Emilio Perez", Natasha Lyonne "His Three Daughters", Michelle Yeoh "Wicked", Zendaya "Dune: Part Two", Catherine Keener "Joker: Folie à Deux"

Commentary - The Piano Lesson is the latest August Wilson adaptation from Netflix, and the previous adaptations did well with the actors. I think Danielle Deadwyler (if she doesn't jump to lead), can revenge her snub for Till with a nomination here. Nickel Boys, from its source material, to its cast, to its director, has a lot of potential, especially for previous nominee Aujanue Ellis-Taylor, who was probably a close second to Ariana DeBose last time. His Three Daughters has a lot of potential, but I have heard that Carrie coon is the standout. She is a veteran actor that is respected. Luca Guadagnino might have his biggest year yet with Challengers and Queer. Lesley Manville, a previous nominee, could ride the great potential of this adaptation to another honor. Finally, Saoirse Ronan plus Steven McQueen feels like Oscar gold. Beyond those five, look for previous winners and nominees like Julianne Moore, Mo'Nique, Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Anne Hathaway, Maria Bakalova, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Yeoh, and Catherine Keener. There are well-beloved, and well-known veterans like Zoe Saldana, Isabella Rosselini, Joan Chen, Kathy Burke, Nina Hoss, Renate Reinsve, Connie Nielson, Dolly DeLeon, Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, Catherine O'Hara, and Adriana Paz are looking for their overdue recognition. Finally, don't forget the plethora of young talented actresses who are taking Hollywood by storm like Selena Gomez, Daisey Ridley, Rachel Sennott, Zendaya, Moses Ingram, and Margaret Qualley.
