Commentary - This still feels like a battle between Women Talking and Glass Onion. The other three slots are up in the air in a race that is limited in "traditional" writing nominees, but a lot of interesting contenders. I am sticking with Living, banking on writers respecting the work. She Said has underperformed across the board, but again, it benefits from a weaker field. In the final slot, I have moved in the remake of All Quiet on the Western Front. It is clearly being seen by Academy members and is set to do very well in the technical categories. I think this will crossover to other categories, including this one, directing and maybe Best Picture. I have moved out The Whale, as it has struggled this season outside of Brendan Fraser. If he ends up winning the Oscar, he will go the route of Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, Marion Cotillard in La Vie in Rose, and last year's winner Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Makeup and acting, and not much else. Top Gun, Avatar, and Black Panther are massive box office draws, all with Best Picture potential. Very often though the writers ignore these types of films. With a weaker group, will they defy the norm? Animated favorites Pinocchio and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On are hoping to crack the race, as are indies like Bones and All and After Yang. For a weaker race, there are still a lot of interesting question marks.

Commentary - A tough race, but does it feel like there is only one slot? The Banshees of Inisherin, EEAAO, The Fabelmans, and TAR are in right? Are they? Right now, I find it hard to believe than any of those four miss. That leaves only one slot, and a lot of contenders. I keep hearing that voters love Triangle of Sadness, so I have it in. But I also hear a lot of love for Elvis (maybe not a writers movie?), Aftersun (I think she can make the cut if she hits some more key precursors), Babylon (is its reaction too mixed to succeed), Till (is it just Danielle Deadwyler?), The Menu, and Nope (both too genre?). The Inspection, Close, The Woman King, Decision to Leave, and Close are all critical favorites that could breakthrough as well.

Top 10 Television Shows of 2022

10. Stranger Things - This season of Stranger Things was a long time coming, and it was worth the wait. Darker, bigger, more emotionally resonant, Stranger Things took an horrific turn (not in terms of quality, in terms of story), and left us with nightmares. The episode "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab" is a cinematic masterpiece on the small screen. I don't know how Stranger Things will end, but this last season made we count down the days till we found out. 

9. We Own This City - David Simon's spiritual sequel to The Wire came and went much like its predecessor. When I look at most of the Emmy nominations this year for the Limited Series categories, I can name someone from this series that was more deserving. Of course, that is the history of David Simon after his initial success with The Corner. Emmy voters have continually ignored his brilliance, and We Own This City is no different. It is bold, dark, brilliant, and quietly, yet impressively, effective. 

8. Better Things - Better Things ended on a pitch-perfect note. Pamela Adlon's quirky, funny, loving series about family, friendship, motherhood, and life was one of the finest shows of the last decade. It's last season concluded the series with aplomb, and left a whole in our hearts that will not soon be filled. 

7. Better Call Saul - Better Call Saul may never have the same level of recognition as its predecessor Breaking Bad, but damn if it didn't blaze its own trail. It's final season was its finest and darkest and proved that it should only be compared to itself. 

6. The White Lotus - The White Lotus' second season takes us to Italy, and continues the awkward, funny, dark, twisted humor of the original series. It was fantastic, and I think I speak for its fans when I say, I can't wait to see what Mike White and his team do with this intriguing series next. 

5. Somebody Somewhere - This gem of an indie comedy was so funny, honest, and real, and was led by a jaw-dropping performance from Bridget Everett. I was so thrilled to see it got a second season. It deserves it for its honest insight into humanity, something we all need to see. 

4. The Rehearsal - A series that is equal parts cringe and funny, bizarre and funny. Like many folks, I was both intrigued and flabbergasted by The Rehearsal, and its creator Nathan Fielder. But many moons later, I am still thinking about this series, which is the tell-tale signs of brilliance. 

3. Hacks - Hacks Season 2 goes on the road, deepens the dynamic between Deborah and Ava, and brings some great material to some of its supporting cast, particularly Meg Stalter and Paul W. Downs. It completely avoided the sophomore slump, built on its excellent first season, and remained one of the funniest, sharpest, and best shows on television. 

2. Abbott Elementary - Every once in a while, a show comes along that reminds you that broadcast television is not dead, and can still make some real small screen gems. Abbott Elementary is one of those shows. Emmy Winners Quinta Brunson and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and the rest of the amazing cast, lead a pitch-perfect comedy about teachers in an inner city school in a mockumentary style. It is such an honest, funny, and refreshingly unique comedy series that has only gotten better in its second season. 

1. Heartstopper - Heartstopper made our hearts stop. While most of us stopped being teenagers awhile ago, something about this series felt universal. It wasn't just made for teens. It was made for the many generations before it that wanted to have a crush on the guy we liked in high school, that hoped our parents would understand, that wished we could be happy and have friends, and somehow, despite all the pressures of being a teenager, we could find our people. This show was pure joy, and a wonderful new edition to the television landscape.

Alec Baldwin and the crew of RUST for continuing to deny responsibility for the on set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The situation is still messy. A wrongful death lawsuit was settled, but the criminal investigation continues. In November, Baldwin sued crew members for giving him the loaded prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. News reports say Baldwin also texted Hutchins’s husband, Matthew, saying that the gun was never meant to be fired at a particular camera angle.

Commentary - This battle feels like a three-way race between Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and Turning Red. All are incredibly different films, but all excellent entries into this competitive race. Turning Red is Pixar (so don't count it out), Marcel has a lot of critical support, and Guillermo Del Toro's name alone (plus the excellent film), make it an intriguing vote. In the last two slots, I am putting in Puss in Boots latest entry, which actually received great reviews, and is coming in hot right at the minute. Also, I moved Wendell & Wild back in. Netflix has done well in this category in recent years including Over the Moon, Klaus, and The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Of its many titles, Wendell & Wild has the most buzz, and a star-studded team behind it. The Bad Guys is so popular, Lightyear is Pixar, Inu-Oh is GKids, Strange World is Disney, and Apollo 10 1/2 is an intriguing entry from Richard Linklater. Also watch out for My Father's Dragon, The Sea Beast, and one of my personal favorites, The Bob's Burgers Movie.

Commentary - With Good Night Oppy missing the cut, this opens up this race to other contenders. All the Beauty and the Bloodshed has won the majority of the critical awards, but it faces still competition from Fire of Love and All that Breathes. Descendant is from Netflix, and its timely, as is Navalny, which could be one of our surprise winners that this category often produces.

Commentary - This is a tight race. The questions that remain are: 1)Will the popularity of Inarritu propel him here, even though the film is eh? Will the critical favorites like EO or Return to Seoul overcome more popular choices? We will have to wait and see.

*Cringe Citation. Harvey Weinstein’s shameful audiotape recordings. And being reminded of them/him in “She Said.”

*Too Much Information Citation: Emma Thompson, for “Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.”

*Blonde. For depicting only the worst fantasies about Marilyn Monroe, and none of her beauty, grace and intelligence.

*More Blonde. A film that re-exploited Marilyn Monroe and made me feel bad for her. She never had a chance in a man’s world, and this film exploited her again through the unnecessary explicit scenes.

*And More Blonde. An overrated actress romping through the film exposing herself. And why the constant showing of embryos, is it to champion pro-lifers.

*Even More Blonde. Completely inaccurate. The portrayal of the actress is shallow and cliched, and the part of the speaking embryo comes across as a disquieting anti-abortionist statement. My review…

*She Said. A drama about the NY Times investigation into the sex charges against Harvey Weinstein, “She Said” comes off more as a self-congratulatory promo for the NY Times, than emphasis on its victims and intimating a kind of damage control there for its own numerous scandals – the weapons of mass destruction hoax, and most recently calling for the release of Julian Assange –  without an apology for the paper’s media participation in orchestrating his incarceration.

*The Cannes Film Festival. For disrespecting credentialed Deadline critic and distinguished WFCC member Valerie Complex, treating her with racist implications as an intruder there. On Being Black At Cannes: How Microaggressions Marred My Festival Experience

*Shame On DOC NYC. For announcing then scrubbing the name off their public list, secretly inviting as guest of honor a cinematographer from the Ukraine Neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, Dmytro Kozatsky, who sports Nazi tattoos, and is fond of creating photographs of swastika carved pizzas, while dragging out from the premises a young woman protesting the event.
