The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Picture

January Nomination Predictions
Da 5 Bloods
Judas and the Black Messiah
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
Minari
News of the World
Nomadland
One Night in Miami
Promising Young Woman
The Trial of the Chicago 7

Other Contenders - The Father, Soul, Sound of Metal, First Cow, On the Rocks, Tenet, Malcolm & Marie, Ammonite, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Palm Springs, The Prom, Pieces of a Woman, Another Round, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Miss Juneteenth, Mulan, Cherry, Wonder Woman 1984, Let Them All Talk, The Way Back, The White Tiger, The King of Staten Island, Wolfwalkers, The Assistant

Commentary - The SAG/Globe/Critics Choice nods this week will start to help us really sort out the contenders from the pretenders. I think SAG will be kind to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, One Night in Miami, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Da 5 Bloods, boosting their campaigns. I expect Nomadland to also continue its run towards Oscar gold. Promising Young Woman and Minari have done extremely well with critics, and this next week will be a big test if they can also do well the rest of the season. News of the World may have to wait till the guilds and PGA weigh in, but I expect it to do much better in the second half of the season than it did in the first half. Mank has not done terribly with critics groups, but again, I think its Hollywood story will resonate with industry members. Finally, of all the late-breaking cotnenders, it looks like Judas and the Black Messiah is going to come on strong, and if the SAG nominating folks have seen it, it apparently could do very well with their voters. But that leaves Soul out, which has been so well received, as has The Father, which was an early contender that needs a boost fast to get it back in this race (Globes may help with that a lot). Sound of Metal and First Cow have done extremely well on the critical circuit, but I wonder if that streak is going to end with the guilds. Malcolm & Marie is a late-breaking contender, but has lots of mixed reactions. I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Palm Springs, Pieces of a Woman, Another Round, Borat, On the Rocks, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Assistant, Ammonite, Miss Juneteenth, The White Tiger, The King of Staten Island, and Wolfwalkers are all hoping to breakthrough as quirky/funny/indie contenders. Big films like Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, Mulan, The Way Back, and Let Them All Talk are hoping to be the blockbuster alternatives. Finally, we still don't know about Cherry or The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Director

January Nomination Predictions
David Fincher "Mank"
Regina King "One Night in Miami"
Spike Lee "Da 5 Bloods"
Aaron Sorkin "The Trial of the Chicago 7"
Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"

Other Contenders - Lee Isaac Chung "Minari", Paul Greengrass "News of the World", George C. Wolfe "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", Shaka King "Judas and the Black Messiah", Emerald Fennell "Promising Young Woman", Florian Zeller "The Father", Darius Marder "Sound of Metal", Kelly Reichardt "First Cow", Sofia Coppola "On the Rocks", Sam Levinson "Malcolm & Marie", Christopher Nolan "Tenet", Thomas Vinterberg "Another Round", Lee Daniels "The United States vs. Billie Holiday"

Commentary - This race is always a tight one, and even when we think we know what is going to happen, the director's branch always throws in a wildcard. Chloe Zhao feels like the easy front runner for this award right now. Nomadland may stumble at SAG, and I'm still not convinced it is a slam-dunk for Best Picture, but as we have seen in recent years, that does not always affect Best Director. A lot of folks are sleeping on David Fincher, and maybe they know something I don't. But I feel like Oscar voters are going to respect Fincher's work, particularly the directors. Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 sees a much improved effort from his directorial debut, and he is getting a lot of deservedly positive attention. Spike Lee could get his second nomination in this category as Da 5 Bloods continues to do really well on the critical circuit, and has clearly not been forgotten since its early summer debut. Finally, while I have this horrible feeling that the director's branch might snub her, I am sticking with Regina King. I think One Night in Miami will do much better with the guilds than with critics, and it will be hard to ignore an artist so well-liked in this industry. But there are a lot of folks that could easily crash this party, which really feels fluid in this early race, unlike many of the acting races. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom keeps doing well, but George C. Wolfe seems missing often in its success. The Academy could reverse that trend. Lee Isaac Chung feels like the kind of contender the directors will love, if it can keep up the buzz. Paul Greengrass is a favorite among this branch, and News of the World is a thrilling, old school technical achievement. Previous nominees Christopher Tenet, Sofia Coppola, and Lee Daniels are hoping to return. Newcomers Florian Zeller, Shaka King, Emerald Fennell, and Darius Marder are making a splash. Thomas Vinterberg could be the foreign-film representative in this category, a move the directors often surprise us with on nomination morning. Sam Levinson's film is making a late-breaking splash, and don't forget Kelly Reichardt, another contender that feels right up this branch's alley.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Actor

January Nomination Predictions
Riz Ahmed "Sound of Metal"
Chadwick Boseman "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Anthony Hopkins "The Father"
Delroy Lindo "Da 5 Bloods"
Gary Oldman "Mank"

Other Contenders - Steven Yeun "Minari", Tom Hanks "News of the World", John David Washington "Malcom & Marie", Kingsley Ben-Adir "One Night in Miami", Lakeith Stanfield "Judas and the Black Messiah", Ben Affleck "The Way Back", Sacha Baron Cohen "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm", Winston Duke "Nine Days", Colin Firth "Supernova", Tahar Rahim "The Mauritanian", John Magro "First Cow", Tom Holland "Cherry", Adarsh Gourav "The White Tiger", Denzel Washington "The Little Things", Andy Samberg "Palm Springs", Jude Law "The Nest", Max Harwood "Everybody's Talking About Jamie", Jesse Plemmons "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Dev Patel "The Personal History of David Copperfield"

Commentary - Such a great race brewing this year. I feel pretty confident about Delroy Lindo and Chadwick Boseman, and I think the winner will be one of them. Riz Ahmed is continuing to rise for Sound of Metal. Anthony Hopkins will mostly likely get back to back nominations for The Father. Finally, I am sticking with Gary Oldman, as I feel like industry voters will be high on the film. But many of these guys are vulnerable, and there are lots of contenders waiting to break through. Steven Yeun feels like the upset this year, as does newcomer Kingsley Ben-Adir. Tom Hanks is an Oscar-winning legend, and is excellent in News of the World. Latecomers Lakeith Stanfield, Tom Holland, Denzel Washington, and John David Washington are hoping to ride last minute buzz. Previous nominees/winners like Ben Affleck, Colin Firth, Jude Law and Dev Patel have worthy projects. Newcomers like Adarsh Gourav, Max Harwood, John Magro and Tahar Rahim could make a splash. Finally, Don't discount Winston Duke, Andy Samberg, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jesse Plemmons, all of who deserve recognition for their great roles.

January Nomination Predictions
Viola Davis "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Andra Day "The United States vs. Billie Holiday"
Vanessa Kirby "Pieces of a Woman"
Frances McDormand "Nomadland"
Carey Mulligan "Promising Young Woman"

Other Contenders- Sophia Loren "The Life Ahead", Kate Winslet "Ammonite", Zendaya "Malcolm & Marie", Sidney Flanigan "Never Rarely Sometimes Always", Meryl Streep "Let Them All Talk", Meryl Streep "The Prom", Nicole Beharie "Miss Juneteenth", Michelle Pfeiffer "French Exit", Elisabeth Moss "The Invisible Man", Elisabeth Moss "Shirley", Jessie Buckley "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Yeri Han "Minari", Rashida Jones "On the Rocks", Julia Garner "The Assistant", Carrie Coon "The Nest", Radha Blank "The Forty-Year-Old Version"

Commentary - So this one has seemingly made it a four-way race. Viola Davis, Carey Mulligan and Frances McDormand all feel like locks, and have shared the critical awards so far. I also still feel pretty good about Vanessa Kirby. Netflix is pushing the film, and she is so damn good in the film. The last slot though? Anybody's game. I have moved Andra Day up into the fifth slot. Apparently the film, as a whole, is not the best, but she is apparently fantastic. This gives me flashbacks to Renee Zellweger and Rami Malek. But that slot, and maybe Kirby's are really open to challengers. The legendary Sophia Loren could get yet another nomination for The Life Ahead. Kate Winslet was in this race, but Ammonite's buzz is dying. She should not be discounted though. Zendaya has crashed the party with Malcolm & Marie, but it is, so far, dividing critics, which may hurt its buzz. Beyond Loren, legends Meryl Streep and Michelle Pfeiffer are hoping that the guilds and Globes go to bat for them and pull them into the race. There are also a lot of young, indie, and comedy/genre contenders that could crash the party, and many of them are worthy, including Sidney Flanigan, Nicole Beharie (who won the Gotham!), Jessie Buckley, Elisabeth Moss (in two roles), Yeri Han, Rashida Jones, Julia Garner, Carrie Coon, and a personal favorite Radha Blank.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

January Nomination Predictions
Chadwick Boseman "Da 5 Bloods"
Sacha Baron Cohen "The Trial of the Chicago 7"
Daniel Kaluuya "Judas and the Black Messiah"
Leslie Odom Jr. "One Night in Miami"
Paul Raci "Sound of Metal"

Other Contenders - Mark Rylance "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Bill Murray "On the Rocks", Glynn Turman "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", Bo Burnham "Promising Young Woman", Stanley Tucci "Supernova", David Strathairn "Nomadland", Yahya Abdul-Mateen II "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Charles Dance "Mank", Colman Domingo "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", Aldis Hodge "One Night in Miami", Brian Dennehy "Driveways", Aldis Hodge "One Night in Miami", Jonathan Majors "Da 5 Bloods", Clarke Peters "Da 5 Bloods", Will Patton "Minari", Alan S. Kim "Minari", Michael Keaton "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Frank Langella "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Eddie Redmayne "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Jeremy Strong "The Trial of the Chicago 7", Jared Leto "The Little Things"

Commentary - A race that could go sideways at any point. There are simply so many contenders, and I think that when the Globes and guilds weigh in, we are going to be some surprises. I feel like Chadwick Boseman will get double nominations after his untimely death, the question is, which category does he win? So far, he has won a lot in both categories. He could win here instead in lead. Leslie Odom Jr. is a rising star, and he feels like he will be a double nominee (with Original Song) this year. He is a standout among an amazing cast, and a recent Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner. There are a lot of contenders in The Trial of the Chicago 7, and there may end up being multiple nominees. But no matter what, I will be shocked if Sacha Baron Cohen's name is not called on Oscar nomination morning. Daniel Kaluuya is an unknown, but his buzz is on the rise, and he is a recent nominee. Finally, veteran character actor Paul Raci is tearing up the critical circuit. The Academy is a different beast, but he would be a great story for voters, and this is often the category where those kinds of actors find success. But there are a lot of folks trying to knock these five out. Just the other cast members from The Trial of the Chicago 7, One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods could fill his race a few times over. Bill Murray should be nominated for his great role in the On the Rocks, and he is still Oscar-less. David Strathairn could ride the Nomadland wave, and he is good in the film. The late-great Brian Dennehy deserves recognition for his final performance, Minari has two great performances, Bo Burnham is getting a lot of critical attention, Stanley Tucci is getting a ton of buzz, and Jared Leto could be a late-breaking standout in John Lee Hancock's The Little Things. This will be a fascinating race to watch.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

January Nomination Predictions
Maria Bakalova "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm"
Ellen Burstyn "Pieces of a Woman"
Olivia Colman "The Father"
Amanda Seyfried "Mank"
Youn Yuh-Jung "Minari"

Other Contenders - Glenn Close "Hillbilly Elegy", Saoirse Ronan "Ammonite", Dominique Fishback "Judas and the Black Messiah", Candice Bergen "Let Them All Talk", Dianne Wiest "Let Them All Talk", Jodie Foster "The Mauritanian, Olivia Cooke "Sound of Metal", Toni Collette "i'm thinking of ending things", Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Charlene Swankie "Nomadland", Talia Ryder "Never Rarely Sometimes Always"

Commentary - If the critics groups are indicative of the Oscar voters, five contenders have easily rose to the top. Olivia Colman is a previous winner and was an early favorite. Amanda Seyfried could be the one that rises when the guilds weigh in, as she is a popular favorite in the role of her career. Ellen Burstyn is an Oscar-winning legend who is getting a lot of notice for Pieces of a Woman, this could be her first nod since Requiem for a Dream. Right now, the last two slots are for newcomers that have emerged as critical favorites. Maria Bakalova is an unconventional choice, but is getting a lot of praise, and will be a favorite among Hollywood after her Rudy Guiliani scene. Finally, standout Youn Yuh-Jung is getting raves for Minari, a sly Oscar contender that is setting its sights high. But I have a feeling that maybe the Oscar voters might go a different way. We have often seen these critical favorites do well, but we have also often seen them lose out to more traditional contenders, and there are plenty to replace them. Hillbilly Elegy may be awful, but Glenn Close is a legend. Saoirse Ronan is a recent favorite with lots of nods under belt, Candice Bergen is a standout in Let Them All Talk and Dianne Wiest can't be forgotten, Jodie Foster may be able to overcome mediocre reviews, Olivia Cooke gives one of her best performances, and previous nominee Toni Collette is brilliant in Kaufman's latest. There are also some upstarts that cannot be ignored like Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Dominique Fishbasck, Charlene Swankie, and Talia Ryder.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Animated Feature

January Nomination Predictions
Earwig and the Witch
Onward
Over the Moon
Soul
Wolfwalkers

Other Contenders - Demonslayer, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Trolls World Tour, The Croods: A New Age, Ride Your Wave, The Willoughbys, On-Gaku: Our Sound, A Whisker Away, Lupin III: The First, Bombay Rose, Scoob!

Commentary - Not exactly the best lineup in recent years, but they should have enough to get to five nods. Soul is a lock, and will probably easily win. I also think that Pixar's Onward will join its Pixar counterpart, despite it being a lesser effort. Wolfwalkers is the critical favorite this year, and often those films do well with the members of this branch. Earwig and the Witch looks to be Studio's Ghibli's entry this year, and they are perennial favorites. Finally, I think after Klaus did so well, Netflix will get Over the Moon in a slot. But Demonslayer has done well overseas, Shaun the Sheep once one this category, Trolls was a huge hit on VOD, The Croods was too, finally, indie/foreign films like The Willoughbys, On-Gaku, A Whisker Away, Lupin II, Bombay Rose, and Ride Your Wave could be one of those surprise nominees which often pop up in this category.

The Oscar Narrative: January Nomination Predictions - Best Adapted and Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay
Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller "The Father"
Ruben Santiago-Hudson "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Luke Davies and Paul Greengrass "News of the World"
Chloe Zhao "Nomadland"
Kemp Powers "One Night in Miami"

Other Contenders - Kelly Reichardt and Jonathan Raymond "First Cow", Charlie Kaufman "i'm thinking of ending things", Kata Weber "Pieces of a Woman", Ramin Bahrani "The White Tiger", Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, Lee Kern, Nina Pedrad "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm", Suzan-Lori Parks "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", Edoardo Ponti "The Life Ahead", Eleanor Catton "Emma.", Angela Otstot and Jessica Goldberg "Cherry", Simon Blackwell and Armando Iannucci "The Personal History of David Copperfield"

Commentary - This is a top-heavy category with probably one slot left to fight among a lot of contenders. Unless something drastic changes, it feels like One Night in Miami, The Father, Nomadland, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom feel like locks. They are doing well with critics, and should easily cross over to Academy members. The last slot really does feel up in the air. I am currently going with News of the World, because I think it is going to do much better with the Academy than critics. But then I remember that often the writer's branch is the one that goes its own way. News of the World is a great film, but a traditional one, and this branch has a history of going against tradition. The three that feel like the most obvious replacements are I'm Thinking of Ending Things, First Cow and Borat. All three feel like the kind of films that writers like, and with Borat, the first film was nominated in Original Screenplay. I would also watch out for Netflix with The Life Ahead and The White Tiger, latecomers The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Cherry, and early contenders like Emma and The Personal History of David Copperfield.

Best Original Screenplay
Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Kevin Willmott, and Spike Lee "Da 5 Bloods"
Jack Fincher "Mank"
Lee Isaac Chung "Minari"
Emerald Fennell "Promising Young Woman"
Aaron Sorkin "The Trial of the Chicago 7"

Other Contenders - Pete Doctor, Mike Jones, and Kemp Powers "Soul", Eliza Hittman "Never Rarely Sometimes Always", Will Berson and Shaka King "Judas and the Black Messiah", Andy Siara "Palm Springs", Sofia Coppola "On the Rocks", Abraham Marder, Darius Marder, and Derek Cianfrance "Sound of Metal", Radha Blank "The Forty-Year Old Version", Judd Apatow, Pete Davidson, and David Sirus "The King of Staten Island", Francis Lee "Ammonite", Kitty Green "The Assistant", Channing Godfrey Peoples "Miss Juneteenth", Debroah Eisenberg "Let Them All Talk", Harry Macqueen "Supernova"

Commentary - Unlike its Adapted counterpart, this category is truly a wide-open race. I feel pretty good about Aaron Sorkin, a previous screenplay winner, returning for The Trial of the Chicago 7, considering it is one of the top Best Picture contenders. Also they nominated him for Molly's Game. Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell's film debut, also feels pretty strong here, due to its incredible burst from the critics awards giving it a huge buzz boost. Beyond that, I could see so many contenders rising to the top. Minari is getting a huge boost from its Golden Globe controversy, and it is high on a lot of critics lists. Da 5 Bloods seems to be slipping from a lot of folks list, but critics groups are forgetting it, and I don't think Academy voters will either. Finally, I think Mank will do incredibly well with Oscar voters, it is literally about their own history. But that leaves a lot of big contenders. Animated films have historically done well in the screenplay category, and Soul is masterful. Indie and quirky projects like Palm Springs, Nevery Rarely Sometimes Always, Sound of Metal, and The Forty-Year Old Version (which just won at Gotham!), often find footing in the writing categoris. Previous winner Sofia Coppola is returning with On the Rocks, Judas and the Black Messiah's buzz continues to rise, Ammonite and Supernova bring LGBTQ stories to the forefront, Let Them All Talk is a big gamble from HBO Max, The King of Staten Island is funny, and The Assistant is timely. This race is far from over.
