Commentary - I already miss Oscar season. Emmy season is coming around soon (May 1st is the official kickoff date here!) and thank God! These last two months have been brutal. Before we kick off Emmy season, let's also kick off Oscar season 2017. In a few weeks it will be official with the start of Cannes. Once again I think the expression that most fits this situation is: Thank God! So here we go: I think that this race is going to be an exciting one top to bottom, with so many big projects with big actors coming down the pipe. We already know that Manchester By the Sea is great, and it could be that Sundance contender that goes far in the awards race, bringing along previous nominee Michelle Williams along for the ride. Speaking of Sundance, The Birth of a Nation has exploded into this year's Oscar race, and I think it will bring along a lot of categories with it. Aunjanue Ellis is a possibility, but I think it is Aja Naomi King that could make the cut. Lupita Nyong'o has had quite a journey since her Oscar win, with two huge hits in The Jungle Book and Star Wars. This year she returns to the screen as herself, not CGI, with Queen of Katwe, and could find herself in the Oscar race once again. Laura Linney is one of those beloved actresses, who every couple of years has a role that catches the Academy's attention. This year, in Clint Eastwood's Sully, opposite the great Tom Hanks, she may get that role once again. Finally, two years ago, Jennifer Aniston got so close to an Oscar nomination with Cake. She is clearly trying to find better roles, roles that actually match her talent, and break her out of that Rachel Green cycle that she has been trapped in for over a decade now. This new film, co-starring Tye Sheridan and Toni Collette, about the Iraq War, could finally get her critics to take her seriously as a dramatic actor (although they should already do so). So that is my current five, although we know that this list will change dramatically in the months to come. Especially when you consider some of the other names on the list with a lot of potential. Kristen Stewart is finally showing the world what she is made of, and Billy Lynn's Halftime Walk looks fantastic. Derek Cianfrance is bringing The Light Between Oceans to the screen, and Rachel Weisz could finally return to the Oscar race. Melissa Leo and Shailene Woodley are both great actresses, and have big roles in Oliver Stone's latest Snowden. Collateral Beauty also offers us a load of potentials from Kate Winslet, to Helen Mirren, to Naomie Harris. Laura Dern is overdue for some more awards love, and the first trailer for The Founder has potential. Lion is being picked up by Weinstein, so watch for serious campaigns for Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara. Katey Segal never got the Emmy love she deserved for three great long-running television series, but there is a ton of buzz for her new role in Bleed for This. Maybe the Oscars will give her some overdue recognition. I am so excited about Damien Chazelle's followup to Whiplash, La La Land, and Rosemarie DeWitt is always great. 20th Century Women has Dakota Fanning and Greta Gerwig, Deepwater Horizon has Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson, The BFG has Penelope Wilton and Rebecca Hall and the new Warren Beatty movie has Annette Bening, Lily Collins, and Taissa Farmiga.. Alicia Vikander returns to the race in the new Bourne movie, and Brie Larson, Kim Basinger, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyra Sedgwick, Juliette Lewis, Meg Tilly, Janet McTeer, Julianne Moore, and Michelle Monaghan all have potential projects. Finally, don't forget some of the genre projects including Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, Judi Dench, Allison Janney, and Eva Green for Tim Burton's adaptation of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Kirsten Dunst in Midnight Special, and The Girl on the Train duo of Allison Janney and Rebecca Ferguson.

The Founder Trailer
Michael Keaton has starred in back to back Best Picture winners, and is getting yet another vehicle where it looks like he is going to shine. From John Lee Hancock, comes The Founder about the founder of McDonalds. Keaton looks great in the trailer, the film is right up the Oscar alley, and let's face it, at this point Keaton can now be considered overdue.

The Girl on the Train Trailer
I am the first to say that Emily Blunt is way overdue for an Oscar nomination. The Girl on the Train trailer looks fun, and anything with Blunt and Allison Janney is worth a view. But this first trailer looks less Oscar and more blockbuster thriller. I still think it could be fascinating to watch, but if Gone Girl, with David Fincher at the helm couldn't make much of an Oscar splash, I don't know if this one can.

RIP Doris Roberts
I had no idea that Doris Roberts was 90. She seemed to have an energy that was unstoppable, and she definitely didn't act her age. Roberts is known by most folks as Marie Barone, the infamous matriarch of Everybody Loves Raymond, a role that won her 4 Emmy Awards. But she also won an Emmy for St. Elsewhere, and had tons of great roles over the course of her 65 year career including: The Defenders, Look Homeward Angel, The Heartbreak Kid, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, Soap, Barney Miller, The Love Boat, Remington Steele, Christmas Vacation, The Boys, and countless other television series and movies. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends tonight. Rest in Peace.

The Birth of a Nation Trailer
Wow. Just Wow. The big splash out of Sundance was Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation, and now I can see why. What a powerful and emotional trailer. With Fox Searchlight behind this, this film has so much potential awards wise, and otherwise. I simply cannot wait.

Star Wars Rogue One Trailer
I like this trailer. It is dark, features folks we've never seen before, and hopefully will give us a deeper look into the Star Wars universe. Plus, for those weird people who haven't yet discovered the talent that is Felicity Jones, this may finally get their attention:

Commentary - Deadpool is hot right now, but Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon. It was big, bold, and also brilliant. It paid tribute to the old, while beautifully launching a new chapter in the Star Wars story. It is the best of the bunch, and I think it will be hard to beat.
Best Male Performance
Will Win - Ryan Reynolds "Deadpool"
Could Win - Leonardo DiCaprio "The Revenant"
Should Win - Michael B. Jordan "Creed"
Commentary - DiCaprio just won the Oscar, is wildly popular, and The Revenant made a ton of money. But with Deadpool being as popular as it is, I think Reynolds will pull it off. For the record, a Michael B. Jordan win would be a welcomed surprise.
Best Female Performance
Will Win - Daisy Ridley "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Could Win - Anna Kendrick "Pitch Perfect 2" or Charlize Theron "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Should Win - Charlize Theron "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Commentary - Theron was so jaw-dropping in Mad Max, and should have replaced Jennifer Lawrence in that fifth slot at the Oscars (although to be fair Lawrence was pretty damn good in Joy). But this is Ridley's to lose. She instantly became a star on screen, carried one of the biggest motion pictures of all time, and has a bright future ahead. This will be well-deserved.

2016 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Action Performance, Best Comedic Performance, and Best Breakthrough Performance
Best Action Performance
Will Win - Ryan Reynolds "Deadpool"
Could Win - Jennifer Lawrence "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" or Chris Pratt "Jurassic World" or John Boyega "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Should Win - Ryan Reynolds "Deadpool"
Commentary - Deadpool is not going away empty-handed, and this feels like the perfect place. Boyega could ride the Star Wars wave, and Lawrence and Pratt are extremely popular, but Deadpool is hot right now at the box office, and with this new generation, what is trending on Twitter probably will catch their vote versus the overall set of nominees.
Best Comedic Performance
Will Win - Ryan Reynolds "Deadpool"
Could Win - Amy Schumer "Trainwreck" or Melissa McCarthy "Spy"
Should Win - Amy Schumer "Trainwreck" or Melissa McCarthy "Spy"
Commentary - I think Ryan Reynolds is great in Deadpool, but this should be a race between McCarthy and Schumer. Luckily McCarthy is getting the Comedic Genius Award, so this should be Schumer's moment. Hopefully MTV voters are smart enough to see that. But probably not.
Best Breakthrough Performance
Will Win - Daisy Ridley "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Could Win - Amy Schumer "Trainwreck", John Boyega "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" or O'Shea Jackson Jr. "Straight Outta Compton"
Should Win - Daisy Ridley "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Commentary - Brie Larson and Amy Schumer have been around for a while, and while I get that both had their big breakthrough films this year, it feels a bit insulting. I think this is Daisy Ridley's to lose, and honestly, no one had a bigger breakthrough than she did.

2016 MTV Movie Award Predictions: Best Hero, Best Kiss, Best Virtual Performance and Best Fight
Best Hero
Will Win - Daisy Ridley "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Should Win - Charlize Theron "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Could Win - Jennifer Lawrence "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Commentary - Theron steals Mad Max: Fury Road, and her empowerment is breathtaking. But I still think that Star Wars is going to sweep a lot of these categories, and its newest star Daisy Ridley feels like a lock here. The only one who could upset the apple cart is Jennifer Lawrence, although it feels like The Hunger Games has peaked at these awards.
Best Virtual Performance
Will Win - Amy Poehler "Inside Out"
Should Win - Amy Poehler "Inside Out"
Could Win - James Spader "Avengers: Age of Ultron" or Andy Serkis "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Commentary - James Spader turned Red Reddington into an awesome villain, and although his role was small, Andy Serkis as Snoke was memorable. Plus, if anyone deserves to win this award it is Serkis, who is the reigning king of motion-capture performance. But the biggest name of the bunch is probably Amy Poehler, and Inside Out was a massive hit. How Phyllis Smith missed the cut here, is beyond me, but I hope to see Poehler win this one for both of them.
Best Kiss
Will Win - Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan "Fifty Shades of Grey"
Should Win - Rebel Wilson and Andy Devine "Pitch Perfect 2"
Could Win - Morena Baccarin and Ryan Reynold "Deadpool"
Commentary - This is one of those categories where I could care less who wins. Deadpool could notch a win here, as it is the most current of the bunch. But I expect the steamy Fifty Shades of Grey to win here, if for nothing else other than notoriety.
Best Fight
Will Win - Rey vs. Kylo Ren "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
Should Win - Furiosa vs. Max "Mad Max: Fury Road"
Could Win - Deadpool vs. Ajax "Deadpool" or Hugh Glass vs. The Bear "The Revenant"
Commentary - Deadpool could win here, once again, if its more recent popularity wins the day, and The Revenant scene is infamous. But once again, it would be unwise to bet against Star Wars, and that infamous scene where Rey first discovers a lightsaber. It is a classic moment for all Star Wars fans, and I assume there are a lot of them out there.
