77tth Venice Film Festival: One Night in Miami, Nomadland, and Festival Awards

Despite the odds, this year, the Venice Film Festival, in a socially-distanced form, continued, and two major contenders emerged. First was Regina King's One Night in Miami. It was hailed as brilliant acted, powerful, and timely. King, a recent Oscar winner, could become the first black female director to be nominated for the Oscar. Chloe Zhao could become the first Asian-American female director to ever be nominated for the Oscar. An historic year could be on the horizon. Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, also received rave reviews, and Zhao is about to direct in the Marvel universe. Female directors felt stung last year when none of them managed to make the top five, despite a plethora of fantastic films. This Oscar season could easily make up for that snub.

Nomadland also managed to win the Golden Lion, and is heading to Telluride, boosting its Oscar potential. Here is the full list of festival winners, from the committee helmed by Oscar-winner, and current Emmy nominee Cate Blanchett. Finally, watch out for Emmy nominee Vanessa Kirby, who won Best Actress for her role in Pieces of a Woman. She could be dark horse Oscar contender this year, especially with Ammonite getting mixed reactions, opening up some new slots in the Oscar race.
