The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actor

The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions
Willem Dafoe "Poor Things"
Robert DeNiro "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Robert Downey Jr. "Oppenheimer"
Ryan Gosling "Barbie"
Mark Ruffalo "Poor Things"

Other Contenders - Colman Domingo "The Color Purple", Charles Melton "May December", Dominic Sessa "The Holdovers", John Magaro "Past Lives", Jeremy Allen White "The Iron Claw", Sterling K. Brown "American Fiction", Paul Mescal "All of Us Strangers", Ben Affleck "Air", Chris Tucker "Air", Chris Messina "Air", Ramy Youssef "Poor Things", Jesse Plemmons "Killers of the Flower Moon", Tom Hardy "The Bikeriders", Matt Damon "Oppenheimer", Jon Bernthal "Origin", Jacob Elrodi "Priscilla", Jacob Elrodi "Saltburn"

Commentary - Three actors continue to lead this race. Ryan Gosling for Barbie, Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer, and Robery DeNiro for Killers of the Flower Moon. Going into the critics awards in about six weeks, they are the strongest. Poor Things is also doing incredibly well so far, and I think that previous nominees Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo will pull another Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz double nominations for a Yorgos Lanthimos film. These five feel safe, which means I am missing something, and of course, this wild Oscar ride can change at any moment. Colman Domingo could end up being a double nominee this year, which has happened a lot in the recent past. Charles Melton is getting a lot of raves for May December. I hope John Magaro continues to be a part of the conversation, Dominic Sessa could benefit from The Holdovers success, American Fiction could bring Sterling K. Brown along, and The Iron Claw could make Jeremy Allen White an Oscar and Emmy nominee in the same year. Paul Mescal could return to the Oscarsfor All of Us Strangers, the guys from Air are all great, Jesse Plemons could ride the Killers of the Flower Mon wave and don't forget Tom Hardy, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, and Jacob Elrodi times two.

The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions - Best Supporting Actress

Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions
Emily Blunt "Oppenheimer"
Danielle Brooks "The Color Purple"
America Ferrera "Barbie"
Taraji P. Henson "The Color Purple"
Da'Vine Joy Randolph "The Holdovers"

Other Contenders - Julianne Moore "May December", Viola Davis "Air", Cara Jade Myers "Killers of the Flower Moon", Jodie Foster "Nyad", Erika Alexander "American Fiction", Sandra Huller "The Zone of Interest", Penelope Cruz "Ferrari", Rosamund Pike "Saltburn", Niecy Nash-Betts "Origin", Lily James "The Iron Claw", Rhea Perlman "Barbie", Juliette Binoche "The Taste of Things", Vanessa Kirby "Napoleon", Issa Rae "American Fiction", Audra McDonald "Origin", Jodie Comer "The Bikeriders"

Commentary - Out of the festivals, a lot of consensus is building around Da'Vine Joy Randolph's role in The Holdovers as the early frontrunner. Emily Blunt, still, for some crazy reason, is still seeking her first Oscar nomination. As Oppenheimer continues to dominate the conversation, I think she might finally make the top five. America Ferrera's monologue in Barbie has become a cultural phenomenon. Plus, she is great in there rest of the film too. If the film continues to do well, I think she gets in. Finally, every trailer of The Color Purple looks like it is going to be an emotional, and visual spectacular. I really hope so, because the potential is through the roof. Julianne Moore is a safe bet for a of pundits right now, but I am concerned that May December will get lost in the mix. I could be totally wrong, and betting on Moore is never a bad idea. Viola Davis stuns in Air, Cara Jade Myers benefits from Lily Gladstone's move to lead, Jodie Foster is a legend, Penelope Cruz stuns in Ferrari, and Erika Alexander could finally get her due for American Fiction. Sandra Huller could be a double nominee, Niecy Nash-Betts could win an Emmy and get an Oscar nod in the same year, Rhea Perlman is nostalgic, and watch out for Lily James, Juliette Binoche, Issa Rae, Audra McDonald, Vanessa Kirby, Rosamund Pike, and Jodie Comer.

The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions - Best Original Screenplay

Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach "Barbie"
David Hemingson "The Holdovers"
Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer "Maestro"
Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik "May December"
Celine Song "Past Lives"

Other Contenders - Justin Triet and  Arthur Harari "Anatomy of a Fall", Jeff Nichols "The Bikeriders", Sean Durkin "The Iron Claw", Emerald Fennell "Saltburn", Chloe Domont "Fair Play", Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola "Asteroid City", Alex Convery "Air", David Scarpa "Napoleon", Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black "Rustin", Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore "Wish", Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Teresa Hsiao and Adele Lim "Joy Ride", Ari Aster "Beau is Afraid"

Commentary - I think there are 10 movies for 5 slots. Barbie is still hitting the original screenplay campaign hard. It will be interesting to see if Academy members agree. Alexander Payne's latest The Holdovers should easily make the cut, even if his name is not attached to the screenplay. Maestro, I think, will play well with Academy voters, and Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer are perennial nominees at this point. I think that Celine Song's Past Lives will have a nice push as the Fall hits, and will particularly do well with this branch. Finally, I moved in Todd Haynes' May December. I'm not convinced that it will survive the season, but it seems to be a lot of people's list in the early go of it. That leaves Anatomy of a Fall on the outside. If it has a strong race, it could easily move in the top five. Same for The Bikeriders, which is being campaigned in this category, but could get moved into Adapted by votes. Sean Durkin's latest The Iron Claw has promise, Fair Play was a Sundance favorite, Air is a great screenplay, and Saltburn, while divisive, also has its cheerleaders that will be going all out for it. Asteroid City is Wes Anderson's return, Napoleon could storm th race, and I would watch out for Rustin, Joy Ride, Wish, and Beau is Afraid.

The Oscar Narrative: Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Nomination Predictions - Best Adapted Screenplay

Post Telluride/Venice/Toronto Predictions
Cord Jefferson "American Fiction"
Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Christopher Nolan "Oppenheimer"
Tony McNamara "Poor Things"
Jonathan Glazer "The Zone of Interest"

Other Contenders - Ava DuVernay "Origin",  Andrew Haigh "All of Us Strangers", Jeff Nichols "The Bikeriders", Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse", Marcus Gardley "The Color Purple", Doug Wright and Maggie Betts "The Burial", Kelly Fremon Craig "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?", Sofia Coppola "Priscilla", Andrew Kevin Walker "The Killer", Tran Anh Hung "The Taste of Things", Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum "Dumb Money", Troy Kennedy Martin "Ferrari", Julia Cox "Nyad", Nia DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik "The Marvels",  Matt Johnson and Matthew Miller "BlackBerry", Mark L. Smith "The Boys in the Boat", Mark St. Germain "Freud's Last Session"

Commentary - Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things continue to dominate the predictions and are set for a lot of nominations and wins this season. Added to the bunch is American Fiction which came blazing out of Toronto with the People's Choice Award which has led to a lot of Oscar gold in the last decade plus (think The King's Speech, Silver Linings Playbook, Green Book, 12 Years a Slave, Room, La La Land, Three Billboards, Jojo Rabbit, Nomadland, Belfast, and The Fabelmans). The last slot now is a huge toss up. A lot of folks think that Origin, from Ava DuVernay is going to do well this season, but I feel like it has some mixed reactions, and I wonder if it is going to play across the guilds. In comparison, The Zone of Interest is a critical smash. I have it in fifth place. Beyond those six, Andrew Haigh's latest got rave reviews and Jeff Nichols has been on the cusp of a nod for a long time. Priscilla, The Kller, The Taste of Things, The Burial, Ferrari, Nyad, Dumb Money, Freud's Last Session, and BlackBerry are all flirting with awards attention. Finally, don't forget the big guys and literary adaptations like The Marvels, The Boys in the Boat, Are You There God It's Me Margaret?, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and of course, The Color Purple.
