Commentary - This race suddenly became competitive last year when the perinnial favorite Jeff Probst was surprisingly left off the list, leading to a victory for Tom Bergeron. This year I expect Bergeron to return to the race as the frontrunner, and unless Probst being left off was a fluke, I think that he will once again miss the cut. Once Emmy voters move away from you as an individual or as a show, they usually stay away. I also expect last year's nominees Phil Keoghan and Cat Deeley to return, both of whom could challenge Bergeron for the win. The last two slots for me are tricky. Probst is still a serious contender as is previous nomiee Heidi Klum. I also think that RuPaul could find footing, as he is definitely the one standout contender. First, I think that the continuing popularity of Betty White will get her into the race again, despite the fact that her hosting duties are limited. But I think that the last two slots are between rival musical hosts. The Voice is becoming more and more popular among critics and among fans. At the same time, American Idol is dropping tremendously in the ratings, and week after week this season only got bad news. While Ryan Seacrest still remains a popular television host (a concept I have never fully grasped), I think that Carson Daly could overtake his rival at the Emmy nominations this year, emblematic of The Voice's rising dominance over the aging Idol.
