Best Directing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Glenn Weiss "The Oscars"
Could Win - Any of the other four.
Should Win - Glenn Weiss "The Oscars"
Commentary - Weiss is a legend, and wins these awards consistently for his excellent direction of most of our big awards ceremonies. I don't see the lackluster Halftime show winning, and the other three are all very similar comedy specials that might be hard to distinguish. If Weiss is nominated, it is probably a safe bet to pick him.
Best Writing in a Variety Special
Will Win - Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Presents: The Great American* Puerto Rico (*It's Complicated)
Could Win - Any of the other four
Should Win - Patton Oswalt "Patton Oswalt: Annihilation"
Commentary - This could be one of the toughest races to predict. I could easily see all five nominees taking the stage. Full Frontal won this category last year for their White House Correspondents special. Patton Oswalt won the year before. Michelle Wolf just did the actual Correspondents dinner and she and John Mulaney received rave reviews for their stand up specials. Finally, Steve Martin and Martin Short are both Emmy-winning comedy legends. I am sticking with Full Frontal, as this category likes repeat winners, but seriously any of those names could be called and it would not surprise me.
