Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media
Will Win - The Greatest Showman
Could Win - Call Me By Your Name or Deadpool 2
Should Win - The Greatest Showman
Commentary - Of the bunch, The Greatest Showman has sold more records, is the only one with original songs and has become a genuine phenomenon. Not long ago, over a year after the original's release, another album featuring pop stars singing these songs was released, just in time to remind Grammy voters of the original. I think it wins easily.
Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media
Will Win - Ludwig Goransson "Black Panther"
Could Win - Alexandre Desplat "The Shape of Water" or Michael Giacchino "Coco"
Commentary - Only one of the nominees is from a 2018 film, Black Panther, but it is up against last year's Oscar winner The Shape of Water. Desplat is a favourite, as is Giacchino, but this award often differs from the Oscars. I think that Black Panther's music has become as much of a cultural phenomenon as the film. The Kendrick Lamar part of the music is nominated for Album of the Year, and their are a total of six nominations for music from this film. I think Goransson upsets.
Best Song Written for Visual Media
Will Win - Shallow from A Star is Born
Could Win - Any of the other four
Should Win - All the Stars from Black Panther
Commentary - This category feels like a slam-dunk for Shallow as it continues its romp through awards season. It is also nominated for three other awards. Of course, All the Stars is also wildly popular with four nominations as well, and the soundtrack is up for a bunch of other awards. But you can't stop at just those two. This is Me and Mystery of Love were Oscar nominees last year, and This is Me was a huge hit. Then you have Remember Me, which won the Oscar last year. This race is most likely going to Shallow, but I don't think it is as big of a slam dunk as many believe.
