Commentary - Allison Janney literally can pick from any of this season's 22 episodes of Mom, and she would have an Emmy-winning tape. She is just that good in that show, and is so beloved by these voters, I think she is way in the lead to win her second in a row in this category and seventh overall. Beyond that I think there is a lot of wiggle room. Unless they just complete ditch Modern Family this year, I think Julie Bowen is a lock, and as always, she has several great tapes that keep her as a threat for the win. Anna Chlumsky is great in Veep, but her last two Emmy nominations seemed like placeholders to me. This year, she will more than earn her nomination for her stellar season, and if she submits that episode where she just lays into Selina Meyer, she could very well challenge Janney for the win. This is where it gets tricky. Mayim Bialik has been a staple here for a while, and I expect her to return, although this year she feels more vulnerable than normal. Ever since they allowed variety performers to compete in comedy categories, SNL has usually gotten at least one in: Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, and now Kate McKinnon. She was a surprise nominee last year, but I don't think it will be shocking when she gets a second nomination in a row. Despite a rocky season overall, she is the best thing about SNL every week, and her profile just keeps rising. But that leaves only one slot, and I think there are three newcomers that are hoping to get in. And if McKinnon and Bialik are the last two of the veterans, then they are the ones that could miss out in favor of the newbies. First and foremost, and my pick for the final slot, is Judith Light. Transparent is probably going to be the breakout hit of the season on the comedy side. She is a Tony-winner, a recent Emmy nominee, and a well-beloved acting veteran. But then there are the Kimmy Schmidt girls. I also think that Kimmy Schmidt could breakthrough with some big nominations, and both Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski are hard names to ignore. For now, I think that in a tight race, some vote splitting could leave them at 7 and 8. But this is one race that could get a big shakeup come final list. I also think that Jane Lynch and Dot-Marie Jones are potent threats for Glee. Sofia Vergara, Carrie Brownstein, Merritt Wever, Eden Sher, and the extended casts of SNL, Mom, Togetherness, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Girls, and HAPPYish should not be ignored.
