Ruby Dee was one of the most important artists and figures of our time. I am sad to say that at the age of 91, she is no longer with us, as she joins her beloved Ossie Davis in heaven. She was an Academy Award nominee, a Screen Actors Guild winner, an Emmy winner, a Grammy winner, and won 4 NAACP Image Awards. Some of her iconic roles include Do the Right Thing, American Gangster, A Raisin in the Sun, Roots: The Next Generation, Decoration Day, Jungle Fever, and countless other stage and screen productions. But she was not just an incredible artist, but an incredible person, wife, mother, activist, and humanitarian. She dedicated her life and work to the struggle for civil rights, the fight against McCarthyism, and countless other struggles that her and her community faced throughout her 91 years. She was a tremendous person, a brave soul, and we will miss her dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family, and I hope that you forever rest in peace old friend.
