The Oscar Narrative: The End

Okay, let's get this part out of the way. Screw you Will Smith. Screw you (I would use stronger language, but I'll refrain). The big screen was back, a normal Oscar ceremony celebrating films actually happened. Many of the films honored actually played in theaters. Many of them drew audiences back to the theaters. The return to some sort of semblance of normalcy in our culture seemed to be on the horizon. You, your outburst, your unnecessary ridiculousness dominated the headlines this morning, instead of what should have been dominating those headlines.

The Oscars rebounded their ratings. It is still lower than before, but it was a 56% increase from the pandemic ceremony, and as streaming increases, I suspect the numbers will always improve after a few days moving forward. We finally had hosts again, and overall, they were funny, and engaging, and did their job, although I would argue we needed more of them. The first openly queer person of color won an acting award sitting next to her co-star, who won for this role 60 years ago. The first deaf man, and only second deaf actor won an Oscar, and when YJ signed his name, it was one of the most openly heartfelt moments in recent awards history. Jessica Chastain, a hard working actor, finally won her first Oscar for a passion project of a misunderstood icon. Kenneth Branagh finally won an Oscar for his best film. Two female filmmakers, Sian Heder and Jane Campion, won Oscars. Jane Campion became only the third woman to win Best Director, and for the first time ever, we had back to back female winners. Dune, a box office success, won 6 awards. Summer of Soul's win, and Questlove's speech, were a lovely rebound from a dark moment. These are just a few of those great moments. Sure, everything didn't work. Despite cutting the fluff from 8 categories, they still ran 30 minutes over, the In Memoriam segment was just a bit too joyous, the fan voted stuff was ridiculous, and the ratings were still incredibly low for what should be one of the highlights of the year. But that is every major live event. The positives, far outweighed the negatives, and yet all we are talking about at the watercoolers is Will Smith being an ass. This was going to be his night. The first time he won an Oscar for a passion project. He was good in the film. He was deserving of recognition. He ruined that opportunity. The Academy may never invite him back, and they would be right in that decision.

In the end though, the less I thought about Will Smith, and the more I thought about those positive moments, the darkness of that moment started to fade away. The Oscars are a flawed experience. I have been watching this ceremony for decades now, and have been covering them as a blogger for now 12 years, and they have never gotten it 100% right. You know, the critics, with social media, and so many distractions, are always going to find fault. Unfortunately, the Will Smith moments, help that narrative. I still plead to all those out there that love film, that believe in its magic, that still find hope and love and community in the darkness of the shared moments of the theatrical experience. I plead that they will still care about the Oscars, despite their flaws. Because, at the end of the day, it is not about who wins, and who loses. It is about a celebration of an artform that we love. Maybe CODA will not be remembered as a cinematic classic. It will not be studied in film school and adored by cinephiles. But maybe, just maybe, it is the film that we needed at this moment. After two dark years of our history, with a war whose atrocities have united the Western world, but still remain atrocious, with a looming specter of a fragile democracy at the hands of a political party that seems hell bent on destruction for power, we need hope. CODA is a movie about hope. It is a movie that offends no one, because it unites everyone. It is about diversity, maybe in a way we haven't considered enough. It is about the power of family, the power of love, and again, the power of hope; and we all need that.

We are entering the unfortunate year thirteen here at The Awards Psychic. I know that this blog is more for me, than for those fans out there, the few and far between. But for those who have stuck it out all these years, thank you. The Oscars will continue to flabbergast, annoy, inspire, and dominate headlines for all the wrong reasons. But those of us who are not in it for the glory, are not in it because our favorite film always wins, but who are in it for the love of film, The Oscars will continue to dominate our collective conversation. Thank you for joining me again for another Oscar narrative. Today the story ends. I hate this day, I hate the void, and the quiet. At least I know that another season is always on the horizon, and I hope you continue to join me for the ride.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress

Best Actor
Will Win - Will Smith "King Richard"
Could Win - Benedict Cumberbatch "The Power of the Dog" or Andrew Garfield "tick, tick...boom!"
Should Win - Smith or Garfield
Commentary - Cumberbatch seemed like a lock to win the BAFTA. When Will Smith won there, I knew it was over. Smith as swept the major precursors, has star power, has been campaigning with the Williams' sisters, and has hit the point in his career where recognition is deserved.

Best Actress
Will Win - Jessica Chastain "The Eyes of Tammy Faye"
Could Win - Penelope Cruz "Parallel Mothers", Olivia Colman "The Lost Daughter", or Kristen Stewart "Stewart"
Should Win - Chastain
Commentary - Penelope Cruz is peaking at the right minute, and there is a lot of passionate support for her performance. Kristen Stewart has a lot of support too, and neither her nor Cruz were nominated at SAG, so this race is completely different than every other major precursor. Colman has never won an individual SAG Award, and still managed an Oscar and an Emmy. She is just so popular, and has upset before. But there seems to be a lot of momentum for Jessica Chastain, and the story of how she got this film made is inspiring. It is a tight race though and anything could happen.

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win- Troy Kotsur "CODA"
Could Win - Kodi Smit-McPhee "The Power of the Dog"
Should Win - Kotsur
Commentary - Kotsur has swept the major precursors, and is the heart and soul of CODA, which is now a major Best Picture contender. He wins in a walk.

Best Supporting Actress
Will Win - Ariana DeBose "West Side Story"
Could Win - Aunjanue Ellis "King Richard" or Kirsten Dunst "The Power of the Dog"
Should Win - DeBose or Ellis
Commentary - Ariana DeBose has now swept all the big awards, is playing a character that won her co-star an Oscar, and she breathes new life into an iconic role. Again, like Kotsur, she wins in a walk.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Picture and Best Director

Best Picture
Will Win - CODA
Should Win - Drive My Car or Dune
Could Win - The Power of the Dog
Commentary - If I were a voting member, the haunting Drive My Car and the epic Dune would top my ballot. But alas, this feels like a battle between the Goliath of The Power of the Dog and the David of CODA. When I finally set down and watched The Power of the Dog, I immediately wondered about its chances on the preferential ballot. But then it won the DGA, got 12 nominations, and it truly felt like a front runner. My initial suspicions were correct as CODA, the feel good favorite that makes you stand up and cheer, won the SAG and the PGA. The Power of the Dog is clearly a film with a lot of detractors, which hurts it in this voting system, and it is hard to root against the power of CODA's message. I think it wins in an upset that turns out might not be as surprising as we thought.

Best Director
Will Win - Jane Campion "The Power of the Dog"
Should Win - Jane Campion "The Power of the Dog"
Could Win - Kenneth Branagh "Belfast"
Commentary - Jane Campion is winning this in a lock. She has won every major award, and her work in The Power of the Dog is worthy.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature

Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win - Sian Heder "CODA"
Could Win - Jane Campion "The Power of the Dog" or Maggie Gyllenhaal "The Lost Daughter"
Should Win - Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe "Drive My Car"
Commentary - I really thought that there would be a BAFTA/WGA split, because The Power of the Dog was not eligible. But then CODA won both, and that was a huge victory at BAFTA. Plus it looks like CODA could end up winning Best Picture. If it wins here, it could be a sign of how the night will unfold.

Best Original Screenplay
Will Win - Paul Thomas Anderson "Licorice Pizza"
Could Win - Adam McKay and David Sirota "Don't Look Up" or Kenneth Branagh "Belfast"
Should Win - Paul Thomas Anderson "Licorice Pizza"
Commentary - A lot of folks are still banking on Kenneth Branagh, my pick for a long time. But if he cannot win over his home crowd at BAFTA, I don't know if he can pull it off with the American Academy. Don't Look Up has a lot of support, and it won the WGA, a surprise for a lot of people. But BAFTA, the big broad consensus vote went for Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza. This is a close race to watch, but I think PTA finally wins his Oscar.

Best Animated Feature
Will Win - Encanto
Could Win - The Mitchells vs. The Machines or Flee
Should Win - The Mitchells vs. The Machines or Flee
Commentary - Encanto missed at the Annie Awards, which was interesting. But it has won almost every other major precursor that matters. I think it is a lock.

Best Documentary Feature
Will Win - Summer of Soul (Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)
Could Win - Flee
Should Win - Flee or Summer of Soul
Commentary - A tough vote, with two amazing films nominated. But Summer of Soul has won the most major precursors, even winning over BAFTA voters. I think it pulls it out in a tighter than expected race.

Best International Feature
Will Win - Drive My Car
Could Win - The Worst Person in the World
Should Win - Drive My Car
Commentary - The only nominee that is also a Best Picture nominee? Drive My Car. Should win in a walk.

The Oscar Narrative: Final Predictions - Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Visual Effects

Best Cinematography
Will Win - Greig Fraser "Dune"
Could Win - Ari Wegner "The Power of the Dog"
Should Win - Greig Fraser "Dune"
Commentary - This category stumped me last year. But this year, BAFTA and ASC matched up. The visuals of Dune are too extraordinary to deny. The Power of the Dog is the potential upset, but this is Fraser's to lose.

Best Costume Design
Will Win - Cruella
Could Win - Dune
Should Win - Cruella
Commentary - Cruella won the BAFTA, the CDG, and, being a movie about fashion, has the kind of big and bold costumes that voters love. But I am getting Mad Max vibes from Dune, who won this award, which felt odd in the pantheon of winners (ironically it was Jenny Beavan for Mad Max, who did the costumes for Cruella). So watch out for Dune, which also won the CDG, and could be a tech awards juggernaut.

Best Film Editing
Will Win - Dune
Could Win - The Power of the Dog or King Richard
Should Win - tick, tick...boom!
Commentary - The inclusion of tick, tick...boom! was so nice to see, and even though I know it won't win, the nomination is an excellent choice. King Richard won the ACE Eddie in a surprise, and The Power of the Dog is a big Best Picture contender. BAFTA went for No Time to Die, which does not help us. I feel like this is a repeat of the Gravity year, where it won neither of the major precursors, but was the technical juggernaut. This race could end in a surprise (I wouldn't even discount Don't Look Up), but I am predicting Dune to eke out the victory.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Will Win - The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Could Win - Dune or Cruella
Should Win - The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Commentary - Dune is the science fiction contender, which often prevails, and Cruella has the high fashion angle, which is popular for voters. But this category often lines up with a biopic Best Actor/Actress winner. Think The Iron Lady and Darkest Hour. Jessica Chastain has rocketed to the top of the Best Actress race, and the makeup work to recreate the iconic Tammy Faye look was remarkable. It also won the BAFTA. I think it wins here in a tough race.

Best Production Design
Will Win - Dune
Could Win - Nightmare Alley or West Side Story
Should Win - West Side Story
Commentary - The more traditional set designs of Nightmare Alley and West Side Story were fantastic, and if there is an upset here with one of those films, it would not surprise me. They are both bold, vibrant, and historical, which is often popular here. But, Dune won BAFTA, won its ADG category, and we have seen the connection between cinematography, visual effects, and production design. But watch out. This is a race where spoilers could easily upset, and it is not as locked in as people are predicting.

Best Visual Effects
Will Win - Dune
Could Win - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Should Win - Dune
Commentary - Duh.
