Commentary - The question this year, is how many previous nominees are left out? How many newcomers can crash the race? I feel confident in picking Helena Bonham Carter, who could end up winning this thing for The Crown. I also could see legends, and Oscar/Emmy winners Laura Dern and Meryl Streep crashing for Big Little Lies. But if quality over name matters, which we have seen more of that recently, they could be surprise snubs on Emmy nomination morning. So then who returns? Right now I am betting of the trifecta of Juila Garner, Thandie Newton, and Ann Dowd, aka the last three winners of this category. But I could see a number of combinations of nominees. What about Fiona Shaw who was nominated last year, or Millie Bobby Brown who is a two time nominee? Are their shows strong enough this year to push them in? Previous nominees and winners, some for these roles, include, Janet McTeer, Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski, Mare Winningham, Cynthia Erivo, Chrissy Metz, Alfre Woodward, Uzo Aduba, and Holly Hunter. I would also not count out folks like Sarah Snook, Rhea Seehorn (both of whom are very much in this race), Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Susan Kelechi Watson, Cush Jumbo, Maggie Siff, Indya Moore, and Sandra Bernhard.

The Oscar Narrative: The End

So another Oscar season ends. It feels like it just begun. We were at Sundance, talking about the year ahead, thinking about the films that may or may not be a part of the conversation. My how time flies by. Not just one year, but ten, now almost eleven. A lot has happened in eleven years. There have been so many inconsistencies, heartbreaks, immense changes. Through it all, I have have had this blog, and this continuous Oscar season. Before long, this one will be a faint memory, and we will be moving on to a new and exciting year in film.

Before we do that, let's take a moment to talk about 2019. There were some amazing films, and the Oscars, despite their continued controversy, continue to do great things. We live in an outrage culture, and we live in a time when any idiot can post their thought for the world to see. The Oscars have been caught in this culture, and it seems like nothing will ever be good enough again for them. Not that there aren't legitimate concerns. The nominees are still too white and too male, and the process often leaves out great films, especially in this horrifically short season, which luckily, was a one time only event. But on Sunday, beloved veterans finally won overdue awards. The 92 year drought for foreign language films ended. You had the first foreign language film win Best Picture, the first Korean film to win either Picture or International Feature, and the first Korean director win Best Director. You saw three female filmmakers and two black filmmakers win deserved Oscars. I know we need to see more of those wins in top categories, but documentaries and shorts matter, and their diversity this year was fantastic. We saw the first mainstream studio film to feature gay sex win an Oscar, and by the person who inspired the film. We saw the first indigenous director win an Oscar. There are still lots of strides to be made, many of them by the industry itself. But for all of the issues, they did a lot better than many people expected.

I'll be honest, I spent most of Oscar season kind of checked out of the process. Work was crazy, with a special project that nearly did me in. Personal issues always affect me. As someone who has always struggled with anxiety and depression, I often let the weight of the world consume me, often at the expense of the things that bring me joy. Even the morning of the Oscars, I was just not into it. Then something happened. I started watching the red carpet coverage, started thinking about the night, and suddenly I was in. I am seriously in. I was my normal geeky, giddy self. Oscar night was as crazy, fun, and exciting as it has always had been, since before I can remember. It came back, that love, that passion. Often we forget to make time for the things we enjoy, we forget to live. Oscar season may be an eye-rolling experience for many. But for me, it is one of the few passions I have. Well film is the passion, the Oscars are the celebration of that. And in 2019 we celebrated differences, we celebrated and looked hard at our history, and we celebrated love. We did so with the backdrop of divisiveness and hatred, and a world torn apart. I have said many times before, and yet I feel it bears repeating, that we often find our common humanity in art. Films have a way of connecting even the most disparate individuals. When Renee Zellweger won her well-deserved comeback Oscar, she said this about the legendary Judy Garland, who she brilliantly portrayed, "Our heroes united us. Ms. Garland, you were certainly among the heroes that unite and define us, and this for you". Judy Garland was one of those heroes, and this year, many of the films nominated gave us a whole new crop of movie heroes to unite us and move us closer together, not further apart. That is the power of film, that is why the Oscars matter. That is why, no matter how bogged down in my own world I get, I will strive to never let it affect my blog or my love of film. We need heroes, we need film, we need art, and as long as we have it in this world, I will be here to join all of you on this wild and crazy ride that we go through every year, to celebrate what we love. Commentary - So 1917 feels like this year's The Revenant, or La La Land. It does not have any acting nominations, it didn't get one SAG nomination. No film has won without at least something. Parasite does have any other nominations either, but it won the SAG ensemble. 1917 is the visual visionary film. Is it the preferential ballot film as well? I'm just not sure. But no foreign language film has ever won Best Picture. Ever. But Parasite feels different. It is just so well-received, and you hear voter after voter talking about this film. Of course, you also have those older voters who cannot fathom voting for a foreign language film in Best Picture. So, here is my answer: I have no freaking idea. Conventional wisdom says 1917. Preferential politics favors films like Jojo Rabbit, which is the feel good film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is the film about the film industry, or Parasite, the film that has taken this industry by storm. I don't know what's going to win, and I'm sure the second they read 1917, I'll know I was wrong to take a shot. But I think Oscar voters are going to make history, and reward Parasite Best Picture of the year.

Commentary - Whatever happens in Best Picture, I think that the BAFTA, DGA, and Globe wins for Sam Mendes show that he is way out front in this category. His film is the visual spectacular of the year, and that has won now seven years, most likely eight, years in a row.

Commentary - So here's the deal. All four of these folks won BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG, and the Globe, and a multitude of other critics awards. The only upset I think could be brewing is Scarlett Johansson in Supporting. But I think that is a long shot at best. Expect the Oscars to deliver the same as their predecessors.

Commentary - My, how this category has changed rapidly over the course of 48 hours. Almost everyone was predicting Greta Gerwig to avenge her Director snub and take home a consolation prize. But then Jojo Rabbit won the WGA and the BAFTA, both had Gerwig in their nominations. I think she still has a chance, and Zaillian should be in contention, this looks like it is Taika Waititi's lose.

Commentary - Once again, this race has flipped so suddenly. Parasite wins at BAFTA and WGA. To be fair, Tarantino was not on the WGA ballot due to ineligibility. That's why I think this race is closer than we think. BAFTA is a good precursor, but American voters only had Parasite, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a film that I think plays better with American Academy voter than British ones. So I am picking Parasite, because, I have a bigger prediction for it later on, and because it has the stats. But don't be shocked to hear Tarantino's name once again.

Commentary - Klaus upset at the Annie Awards and the BAFTAs, and Missing Link upset at the Globes. Is Toy Story 4 as strong as it once was earlier in the season? The answer is no, and I would not be shocked to hear either of the two names mentioned instead. I am sticking with Pixar though, because it is usually safe to bet for them, than against them.

Commentary - After Apollo 11 was unceremoniously left off the list, a wide open race has ensued. Honeyland got double nods this year (and isn't winning its other category), so voters might want to reward it. For Sama just won the BAFTA, and has been a force all year. But I am sticking with American Factory. It has won some high-profile awards, has the Obamas backing it, and probably has the story that will connect the most with Oscar voters. But it is a tight race to the finish.

Could Win - Robert Richardson "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"
Should Win - Roger Deakins "1917"
Commentary - After finally winning an Oscar, it looks like Deakins will quickly add another to his shelf. I cannot imagine anyone beating him at this point, especially after winning the ASC and BAFTA, but watch out for Richardson, who is seeking his fourth for his beautiful work in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Best Costume Design
Will Win - Little Women
Could Win - Jojo Rabbit or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Should Win - Little Women
Commentary - Jojo Rabbit upset at the CDG awards, and it makes me think this is a really tight race. However, Little Women was not nominated there, and has picked up steam since it missed out on those earlier awards. It beat Jojo head to head at BAFTA, and I think voters will want to reward the film somewhere, especially now that Adapted Screenplay seems to be slipping away from Gerwig.

Best Film Editing
Will Win - Parasite
Could Win - Ford v. Ferrari or Jojo Rabbit
Should Win - Ford v Ferrari
Commentary - Another tough one. Parasite and Jojo Rabbit win at the ACE Eddies, then Ford v. Ferrari wins at the BAFTA. Almost every split year, it is one of these awards that determines the winner. I am sticking with Parasite. Yes, Ford v Ferrari was able to get a Best Picture nod with little fanfare, but I think the passion for Parasite will give it this win on its way to bigger ones.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Will Win - Bombshell
Could Win - Joker or Judy
Should Win - Bombshell
Commentary - If Joker is really popular, it could pop up here, although it really shouldn't. Maybe Judy gets a nod as well, especially since this category has been paired with lead acting wins in recent memory. But in all honesty, I would be shocked if anything other than Bombshell won here. Charlize Theron's transformation alone is worthy.

Best Production Design
Will Win - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Could Win - 1917 or Parasite
Should Win - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Commentary - 1917 just won at BAFTA and Once just won at the ADG. I think Oscar voters are going to appreciate the wow sets that were created for Once over the barren landscape, with a few punctuated set pieces, of 1917. But it will be a close race to watch.

Will Win - 1917
Could Win - The Irishman or Avengers: Endgame
Should Win - Avengers: Endgame
Commentary - Most people will predict the Avengers, but remember this category has recently stayed away from big blockbusters that weren't nominated for Best Picture. They love Best Picture nominees or more prestigious picks (like Ex Machina, First Man, and Interstellar), over the big flashy blockbusters. The Irishman could surprise, as it might be the only place that it can win at this point. But my guess is that 1917, which is a bigger Best Picture contender, takes the win instead.
