2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Album of the Year

Will Win - Mumford & Sons "Babel"

Could Win - fun. "Some Nights", Frank Ocean "Channel Orange", or Black Keys "El Camino"

Should Win - Black Keys "El Camino"

Commentary - Because there is no clear frontrunner in this years races, I am predicting a three way split between Record, Song, and Album of the Year. This is normally not a smart move, but this Grammy year is an interesting one, and even among the General categories, there is a lot of confusion, and not a lot of overlap. Conventional wisdom says that because fun is nominated in all four, it is going to win. Don't get me wrong, both fun, and Frank Ocean are possibilities, but this award has always favored more veteran performers. Black Keys could easily win, but I think that the popularity of Babel (which is still in the top ten in terms of sales), plus the upward rise of Mumford & Sons will be enough to put it over the top despite its lack of Record of the Year and Song of the Year nominations.

 

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Song of the Year

Will Win - fun. "We Are Young"

Should Win - The Writing Team for Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger"

Could Win - Carly Rae Jepson "Call Me Maybe"

Commentary - This category is one of the strangest in years, with really no veterans. I would love to see Kelly Clarkson's Stronger win this, but since she herself was not a part of the writing team, it hurts the songs chances. Miguel and Ed Sheeran should be lucky to be nominated, but neither seems to have enough to actually win. Carly Rae Jepson's Call Me Maybe was the record of the year, but alas was nominated for its songwriting. The popularity of the song could help it push through, but my guess is that fun, which is present throughout the pop and general fields, will win this one almost by default.

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Best New Artist

Will Win - fun.

Should Win/Could Win - Frank Ocean

Commentary - Some years, this award has afforded us some surprises (Esperanza Spalding for example). So even Hunter Hayes, The Lumineers, or Alabama Shakes are possibilities, as all have done well in their respective fields this year. But my guess is that this award is between the two artists who both made marks on other general categories, Frank Ocean in Album and fun in all four across the board. Ocean has the critical acclaim, and news is that his album just went gold. Compared to fun's sells that its not great, but it shows that he has at least a little power on the charts. But in terms of surprising Grammy popularity, radio airplay, and album sales, no one in this category compares to fun. I resent that they are considered new artists as they were once The Format, and that this is their second album, but Bon Iver's win last year proves, and many other nominees and winners over the years, that what the Recording Academy really means by "new" is when they finally get around to noticing them.

 

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Dance Categories

Best Dance Recording
Will Win - Skrillex "Bangarang"
Could Win/Should Win - Swedish House Mafia "Don't You Worry Child"
Commentary - For my vote, SHM's Don't You Worry Child is an instant dance electronica classic. But my guess is that after the Best New Artist nomination Skrillex is probably the more popular choice.

Best Dance Electronica Album
Will Win/Should Win - Skrillex "Bangarang"
Could Win - Deadmau5 "Album Title Goes Here"
Commentary - I think that this one will be even easier to win for Skrillex, with only the Deadmau5 album as real stiff competition.

2013 Grammy Awards Predictions: Rock Categories

Best Rock Performance
Will Win - Bruce Springsteen "We Take Care of Our Own"
Could Win - Mumford & Sons "I Will Wait" or Black Keys "Lonely Boy"
Should Win - Black Keys "Lonely Boy"
Commentary - See Best Rock Song

Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance
Will Win - Iron Maiden "Blood Brothers"
Could Win - Megadeth "Whose Life is It Anyway?
Should Win- Halestorm "Love Bites So Do I"
Commentary - Halestorm is the only one of the bunch that actually resembles music, but my guess is that Iron Maiden is the favorite, although Megadeth could also win. I will say that this is one of those "who cares?" categories for me.

Best Rock Song
Will Win - Bruce Springsteen "We Take Care of Our Own"
Could Win/Should Win - Black Keys "Lonely Boy"
Commentary - Time and time again Springsteen comes in and beats other competitiors, even those, like The Black Keys, that manage to make it into the general field. This is a well-liked song from a beloved Grammy favorite, and while I hope that the Black Keys pull it off, I kind of have a feeling their not going to let The Boss go home empty-handed.

Best Rock Album
Will Win/Should Win - Black Keys "El Camino"
Could Win - Jack White "Blunderbuss" or Bruce Springsteen "Wrecking Ball"
Commentary - Despite the fact that White and Black Keys made it into Album of the Year, Springsteen could still win this one as well. But my guess is that while We Take Care of Our Own is hard to ignore, that when it comes to the album as a whole, the voters will recognize the superiority of El Camino.

Best Alternative Music Album

Will Win - Gotye "Making Mirrors"
Could Win/Should Win - Fiona Apple "The Idler Wheel..."
Commentary - I know that Somebody that I Used to Know was a big hit, but Gotye is highly overrated. Especially when put up against Fiona Apple's brilliant album The Idler Wheel...But with so many nominations, the Grammy voters will want to reward Gotye somewhere, and this is probably the place to do it.

Best Americana Album
Will Win - Mumford & Sons "Babel
Could Win/Should Win - Bonnie Raitt "Slipstream"
Commentary - I like Mumford & Sons and they will probably easily win this award. But for an award about American roots (Mumford & Sons are British), I would go instead with Bonnie Raitt's awesome effort Slipstream.

Best R&B Performance
Will Win - Miguel "Adorn"
Could Win - Usher "Climax"
Should Win - Estelle "Thank You"
Commentary - Usher's hit Climax may seem like the bigger performance, but the Song of the Year nomination for Miguel, as well as his nomination in R&B Song (where Usher is missing), shows broader support for the song, but I think it is a close race. For my money, Estelle's Thank You is the best tune, but I think she is unfortunately in third place at the moment.

Could Win - Anita Baker "Lately"
Commentary - Anita Baker is probably the more traditional of the performances, so she is definitely a possbility. Plus, Beyonce's 4 has not really been a hit with the Recording Academy. That being said, Love on Top was a radio hit, and Beyonce is still Beyonce. Plus, it is a top-tapping, key-changing good time, and I think Grammy voters will reward her for it.

Will Win - Miguel "Adorn"
Could Win - Trey Songz "Heart Attack" or Anthony Hamilton "Pray for Me"
Should Win - Elle Varner "Refill"
Commentary - While the performance category has some competition, I think that with that Song of the Year nod, that Miguel's Adorn is a lock for the R&B Song.

Best R&B Album
Will Win/Should Win - R. Kelly "Write Me Back"
Could Win - Anthony Hamilton "Back to Love" or Robert Glasper Experiment "Black Radio"

Commentary- The Recording Academy really does need to fix these R&B categories, and not with that three nominee Urban Contemporary Album, whatever that means. They need to go back to R&B Album or Contemporary R&B Album and then a Traditional category, because since the mash-up these categories have seen some strange results. That being said, R.Kelly's Write Me Back got great reviews, and was seen as a return to form, proof he is still one of the best at cranking out solid R&B ballads. So while Hamilton or Glasper are possibilties I think Kelly will return to the winner's circle.

Best Urban-Contemporary Album
Will Win/Should Win - Frank Ocean "Channel Orange"
Could Win - Miguel or Chris Brown
Commentary - This substitute for a Contemporary R&B Album is a weak excuse for a category (only three nominees), and needs to be revived to full potential, with five nominees, and a new name to replace whatever Urban-Contemporary is supposed to mean. That being said, the three nominees are actually good choices, and I think that newcomer and Album of the Year nominee Frank Ocean will be the favorite to prevail, although both Miguel and Chris Brown should not be discounted.

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Rap Categories

Best Rap Performance
Will Win/Should Win - The Throne "N**gas in Paris"
Could Win - Drake feat. Lil Wayne "HYFR" or Kanye West "Mercy"

Commentary - West's Mercy is a great hit, but why honor him there when they can get him and Jay-Z with N**gas in Paris. The only big competition will probably come from Drake and Lil Wayne, but they have lacked the overall Grammy popularity of West and Jay-Z.

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration

Will Win/Should Win - Jay-Z and Kanye West feat. The-Dream and Frank Ocean "No Church in the Wild"

Could Win - Nas and Amy Winehouse "Cherry Wine"
Commentary - Grammy voters may relish one more time to honor the late Amy Winehouse, and, as hard as it is to believe, Nas has never won a Grammy Award. But that being said, I think that the dream team of Jay-Z, Kanye West, The-Dream, and Frank Ocean may simply be too many names for voters to pass up.

Will Win - The Throne "N**gas in Paris"
Could Win - Nas "Daugthers" or Kanye West "Mercy"
Should Win - Nas "Daughters"

Commentary -  In terms of impressive lyrics, no one in recent memory has quite matched Nas. But the popularity of West and Jay-Z and of the song should translate easily to this category.

Best Rap Album
Will Win - Drake "Take Care"
Could Win - Nas "Life is Good"
Should Win - Nas, Rick Ross "God Forgives, I Don't", or The Roots "undun"
Commentary - Since Killer Mike was criminally snubbed, I would go for either Nas, The Roots, or Rick Ross, all great artists who have unfortunately been ignored too often by the Recording Academy. But my guess is that critical favorite and biggest rap album of the year, Drake's Take Care, will walk away with the gold instead.

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Visual Media Categories

Best Visual Media Compilation
Will Win - Marley
Should Win - The Muppets
Could Win - Midnight in Paris
Commentary - I think that this award is between the old-school sound of Midnight in Paris, and the Caribbean tunes of the doc Marley. While it could go either way, I am leaning more towards the newer and more progessive sounds of Marley.

Best Visual Media Score
Will Win/Should Win - Ludovic Bource "The Artist"
Could Win -  Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Commentary - With their roots in popular music, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, could be a popular vote for the recording industry. But anyone who saw The Artist knows that its score has as much to do with its success as any other element of the film. I expect it to repeat its Oscar victory here.

Will Win - Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars "Safe and Sound" from "The Hunger Games"
Should Win - Bret McKenzie "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets"
Could Win - McKenzie, Abraham's Daughter, or Learn Me Right
Commentary - With so many names worth mentioning in this category, it is very much a toss up. I would personally go for the Oscar winner Man or Muppet, but I feel that when two Grammy favorites team up on a song, it is probably hard to miss for voters checking off their ballots. So the names of The Civil Wars and Taylor Swift on a song together will be hard to pass up.

2013 Grammy Award Predictions: Best Short Form Video

Will Win/Should Win - Jay-Z and Kanye West "No Church In the Wild"

Could Win - Rihanna "We Found Love" or Foster the People "Houdini"

Commentary - We Found Love is an upbeat and romantic video that kind of juxtaposes its club beat with more realistic images. No Church in the Wild is a dark and violent video that may turn some people off, but is also really well done. I am going with The Throne, because I think it is more technical, and more artistic. Although even Foster the People's Houdini could slip in as a wild card and beat both.

Best Spoken Word Album
Will Win/Should Win - Michelle Obama "American Grown"

Could Win - Bill Clinton "Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government"

Commentary - This is one of the most stacked races at the Grammys, although it is also one which most people ignore. Clinton has already won a Grammy, and the continuing popularity of awarding political figures will probably continue when they award the lovely reading of American Grown by the First Lady Michelle Obama. But honestly, even Maddow, Degeneres, and Ian could win, as all are popular, and actually do a great job with their audiobooks.

Best Comedy Album
Will Win - Tenacious D "Rise of Fenix"

Should Win - Kathy Griffin "Seaman 1st Class"

Could Win - Margaret Cho "Cho Dependent" or Jimmy Fallon "Blow Your Pants Off"

Commentary - This history of this award is varied and sometimes unpredictable, compared to its Spoken Word counterpart. If it were my vote, it would go to Kathy Griffin who has shamelessly and hilariously been seeking a Grammy for some years now. But I think this is between Cho, Fallon, and my pick Tenacious D, which seems to have the most buzz, and may be the better fit for Recording Academy voters.
