Commentary - You know, despite all of the craziness, this year is shaping up to be a decent one in terms of Oscar. We already have a some great films, and there are some really buzzed titles that will make for a great race. Nomadland and One Night in Miami lit up the festival circuit, and have talented female directors at their helm. The Trial of the Chicago 7 recently landed to lots of buzz, and The Father has been doing well for a while now, including a few trips to the fall festivals as well. Da 5 Bloods has lost some steam, but I think that the anger and intensity of Spike Lee's film will end show up in the Oscar race. Then there are the unknowns I am taking a chance on. The last time an August Wilson film was adapted it went on to a Best Picture nod and an Oscar win. This one looks to be even bigger, flashier, and have Netflix behind it. News of the World has a True Grit vibe and Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass are leading the effort. Hillbilly Elegy could be fantastic, or be a mixed bag. But with Netflix and Ron Howard, I still have it in the running. Mank looks to be one of the biggest contenders this year, and if it is even half as good and creative as it looks, it could take the race by storm. Finally, Soul is yet another Pixar classic according to early reviews, and it has been way too long since an animated film got nominated for this category. In this weird year, and in this difficult year, something with charm and heart could warm voters. But there are plenty of great titles that could crash the party. Big films like Wonder Woman 1984, Mulan, Death on the Nile and Tenet could take the blockbuster slot. Comedies and musicals like Palm Springs, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, On the Rocks, Everybody's Talking about Jamie, The King of Staten Island, and The Prom could follow Soul's lead and charm voters looking for lighter fair. Biopics and period pieces like Respect, Ammonite, The Personal History of David Copperfield, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Judas and the Black Messiah have historically been Oscar bait. Finally, there are a lot of great indies hoping to breakthrough in a fragmented year including Minari, Most Promising Woman, I'm Your Woman, First Cow, Sound of Metal, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Driveways, and The Assistant.
