Yahya Abdul-Mateen "Watchmen"
Tim Blake Nelson "Watchmen"
Jim Parsons "Hollywood"
Jesse Plemmons "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie"
John Slattery "Mrs. America"
John Turturro "The Plot Against America"
Other Contenders - Joe Mantello "Hollywood", Darren Criss "Hollywood", Ray Romano "Bad Education", Louis Gossett Jr. "Watchmen", Tituss Burgess "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", Jovan Adepo "Watchmen", Dylan McDermott "Hollywood", Tom Wilkinson "Belgravia", Jaeden Martell "Defending Jacob", Joshua Jackson "Little Fires Everywhere", Jake Picking "Hollywood"
Commentary - Hollywood was not good. It just wasn't good. I think Jim Parsons will get in on name recognition alone. But Joe Mantello, Dylan McDermott, Darren Criss, and Jake Picking will probably not make the cut, unless the star power of the series can overcome the quality. Tim Blake Nelson and John Slattery feel like the only slam dunks. John Turturro has a lot of buzz, but he might be the shows only major nomination, which is concerning. I am going with Jesse Plemmons, who is a scene-stealer in El Camino, and in an upset, Yahya Abdul-Mateen for Watchmen. I feel the cultural relevance of Watchmen has driven more people to see it that may have missed it the first time around. If they like it, he's in. Also lookout for Emmy favorites Ray Romano and Tituss Burgess, upstart Jovan Adepo, and Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr.
Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie
Rose Byrne "Mrs. America"
Toni Collette "Unbelievable"
Allison Janney "Bad Education"
Margo Martindale "Mrs. America"
Sarah Paulson "Mrs. America"
Jean Smart "Watchmen"
Other Contenders - Uzo Adubo "Mrs. America", Tracey Ullman "Mrs. America", Holland Taylor "Hollywood", Patti LuPone "Hollywood", Melissa Leo "I Know This Much Is True", Hong Chau "Watchmen", Cherry Jones "Defending Jacob"
Commentary - The question is, how many Mrs. America women get in? And which ones? I feel confident that Emmy favorites Jean Smart, Toni Collette, and Allison Janney will take half of the non-Mrs. America slots. They all had great performances, and are all previous Emmy winners. Of the Mrs. America cast, I am predicting Rose Byrne, Margo Martindale, and Sarah Paulson, but I would not be surprised to see Uzo Aduba upset. Beyond those seven, Cherry Jones and Melissa Leo are previous nominees/winners, Hong Chau has a buzzy role, and while Hollywood was not great, Holland Taylor and Patti LuPone are still legends and cannot be discounted.
