Wow, so some very interesting nominations popped up this morning from the Screen Actors Guild. In the Television categories, there were few, only Nurse Jackie and The Office kind of surprising me. However, in the film awards, there were some real doozies. First, in Actor, Joaquin Phoenix did not make the cut. Now this could be blamed on his ridiculous behavior, or it could be that the actor's didn't like The Master, since Amy Adams didn't make the cut. At least Philip Seymour Hoffman assures the film won't go home empty handed. In actress, the biggest surprise, and probably the biggest disappointment was that Emmanuelle Riva was shut out. I still have a feeling that she has a shot, and since Quevenzhane Wallis wasn't eligible, that category could look a lot different come January 10th. Supporting Actor features five former Oscar winners, and the inclusion of Javier Bardem for Skyfall is both brilliant and surprising. Snubbed were though Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson (it doesn't look like Django is a big contender as it got a total of zero nods, of course so did Hugo and it went on to win five Oscars) and Matthew McConaghuey. But still if your scanning down the list, your jaw doesn't really drop until you hit Best Supporting Actress. Maggie Smith, Anne Hathaway, Sally Field, and Helen Hunt are all expected nominees. But then you see it. Yes ladies and gentleman, Nicole Kidman's underground supporting actress campaign just got her a nomiantion for the ultra-controversial and trashy The Paperboy. I am still shocked, considering Amy Adams (a SAG favorite) was left off the list in favor of this performance. I haven't seen the film yet, so I cannot judge whether it is worthy or not, but from everything I heard, this is definitely a shocker. In the Ensemble award, the inclusion of Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is kind of surprising. It also raises the question of its Oscar Best Picture chances. It could be just the actors voting for all of those veterans, or it could be that SAG, along with possible BAFTA consideration is pushing this film into the conversation. At the least it has probably helped Maggie Smith secure a nod. But in terms of Best Picture win, Argo Lincoln, Silver Linings, and Les Miserables took a huge step forward. In its history, only one film, Braveheart, has gone on to win Best Picture without a SAG nod. Plenty have been nominated without a SAG ensemble nomination, but in the last ten years, none have won the big prize. This spells bad news for the current critical darling Zero Dark Thirty. It will surely get PGA and DGA nods, and definitely be a contender, but without this critical component to the puzzle, I find its path to victory a lot more difficult.
